The upstairs is mostly wasted space with a couple ab machines, same lame aerobics DVDs, and the tanning bed. It's nice that there is a shower downstairs, which doesn't seem to get used ever. I prefer to get the sweat off me ASAP, especially in the winter when it is obviously not advisable to step putside when completely drenched. It's great that it is open 24 hours, but going at night is a little dicey. The parking lot is dimly lit, and there is usually nobody anywhere else around. Though Ames is generally a safe place, I would never allow my wife to go alone. I did ride my bike here a few times, but it's not recommended. There is no real bike path to speak of, so you have to share with cars; not great after sun down. I have never seen it packed. The most people I have seen inside were maybe six, and most machines are available no matter what time of day you show up. Pricing is pretty decent, and it gets you in to ANY anytime fitness in the US (and apparently a couple outside of the US) for the price of admission. Admission is cheaper here, at about $30 per month than at other Anytime fitnesses we looked at, so that is also a plus. Would I recommend this? It depends on what you are looking for. We needed a place with some treadmills and ellipticals to use to get out of acclimate weather. Being able to go to a nearby anytime fitness when we travel was also a bonus. If you are a student, or are looking for a REAL grade A gym, the ISU newly rebuilt in 2011 gym is the place to go.

Extremely busy every time I go (sometimes 2, sometimes 6-7), when I started I went to the south main location and that was a mess, 6 squat racks isn't enough and if there's one open people race to it, same with free weights. Started going to the north location and its almost the same way, super busy plus less equipment than south. So on to the contract. For one why does a gym have a contract? I've never been to a gym with a contract, YMCA, anytime, strength shop ect. Why are you giving highschool/ college students contracts? So after not understanding the contract and still signing up (because I thought it would be a nice open gym and I'd stay), let me tell ya it's super hard to get out of it. Even after moving 25 miles away they still won't let me go! YOU HAVE TO MOVE 50 MILES AWAY, you could move all the way to Webster city and still have to come to Ames fitness. Completely stupid! It's so inconvenient for me now having moved away further from Ames and still being locked into this place. So thanks Brett Halverson for denying my request. I will try and let everyone I know not to come to Ames fitness. This gym is my worst nightmare. Do yourself a favor, go to strength shop, planet fitness or just something else.. After cancelled appointments by him and weather issues, he told me he had to rethink his priorities and would be refunding my money. It has been over two months and no money has been returned. I have texted him, emailed him, messaged him, called him and even sent a certified letter. No response. I thought this was someone I could trust and had a good working relationship with. The money I paid him was not enough to file suit over but enough to but a dent in my budget and not getting the services I paid for. Not sure what my options are at this point.
