Back in the days when I was young... I grew up in Brooklyn NY. I was raised in Bed-Stuy & South Carolina--two totally different worlds!!! When in SC, my grandmother would make us go to church...something I didn't do in NY. This wasn't just any church, but Asbury United Methodist Church that my grandmothers' dad built when there wasn't a church for black people to attend in their community. My grandmother would be mad if I wore a business suit to church or any type of pants because she was worried about what her church friends would say about her grand child coming to church in pants. They would say, "Come as you are" but give you the mean side eye when you show up in pants or a short skirt! I had bigger issues besides pants--I had no clue what the preacher was preaching about! Didn't understand it; couldn't follow the sermon to save my life & couldn't understand why they were getting mad when the Youth Choir song Stomp by Kirk Franklin one Sunday. I'm not a kid anymore..... But Crossover Church, let me tell you...it's the complete opposite. I moved here from California last year and I did a search for "urban open-minded" churches in Tampa, FL. I planned to church hop for 6 mths & then make a decision, but once I stepped into Crossover, I've been here ever since! On my first visit, I felt warm & very welcomed by the First Impressions team (a team I later became a part of & happily serve on). On my second visit the following Sunday, Pastor T came & spoke to me in the audience before service started & I told him my name and he said, "Oh yeah, Lena with the very tiny handwriting" that may mean nothing to you, but for him to remember that small detail from a new attendee card I filled out the week prior meant a lot to me. Sometimes the smallest things have the biggest impacts. But some days I sit & wish I were a kid again... I wish my grandmother could have lived to see me actually enjoying church. Actually understanding what the sermon is about and being excited that it's Sunday! Crossover is the most open, diverse, come as you truly are, transparent church I've ever attended. As a military family, we've seen and been to many churches but none that have made us want to settle down and call it home. I can take life lessons from the sermon & apply them throughout the work week. I know this is where God wants me to be and I'm glad the prayer I sent up before doing my urban open minded search led me here! You should really join me! So come on....what are you waiting for! Very VERY active in the Tampa Bay community hosting such events as "love our city" week and "back to school jam". Every time I'm in Tampa this is the church I come and visit. Well balanced teaching from both Pastor Tommy and Pastor Chris. They do not shy away from tough conversations and topics that need to be discussed in the church. They are consistent in helping the community around them and always do different things that help engage the community in an unconventional way. This is not a traditional church , but what is taught is scripturally foundational that believes in discipleship and serving, Teaching what it means to Love God and Love ppl. read more

Crossover is one of the most amazing churches. The staff are great and personable. The preaching is biblical and relevant to our daily lives. If you are looking for a non-judgmental environment that loves there community and embraces diversity. They are over on Fowler in the old Toys R Us building close to USF. They have a lot of different outreach ministries, including Love Our City. In 2019 we had several hundred volunteers and did over 50 service projects in one week. They are very involved with their community and intentional about it too. It is not like other churches as far as being "traditional." They incorporate the arts and hip-hop into their services, which is really amazing to see people's talents and passions. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. I love this church and if you are looking for a great place to go and worship, then you should definitely check Crossover out. read more

This church is PHENOMENAL!! I moved here from NEW YORK and never thought that I would find a church family/home... I stumbled upon this church because my nieces needed school supplies, and I received an invitation for their annual "Back 2 School Jam". The minute I walked into this house of God, I felt the spirit come over me. I instantly felt at home! All of the Pastors here are absolutely GREAT! I can go on and on about my New found family, but you must come and visit and see for yourself. Be prepared to feel the spirit and the love. read more

Multigenerational, multiethnic, ready to love on everyone, and be living examples of God's word kinda church. I love how the message is broken down to applicable steps for everyday living and The pastors aren't yelling at you. The truth is being taught without feeling like you're being beaten over The head with a bible. The pastors are so relatable and down to earth, yet transparent. Casual Sunday is every Sunday Lots of opportunity for personal growth and development with the different programs offered here. I am going to start off with the positives of my first experience at Crossover Church. The positives were as follows: Great music, singer had a beautiful voice, loved how kids and adults were involved in the show, the music lifts the spirit and mood. I liked how when you first walk in at the beginning, the upbeat, spiritual music is playing, it sets a positive and spiritual tone for the rest of the service. The sermon, I thought was fantastic overall by Pastor Chris Harris. I am a 41 year old white female and this experience is not what am I used to as I was raised in a traditional white methodist church, so the yelling and the evangelism was a little weird for me, but that is how they do it in this type of church/culture. I liked how they provide you with a paper to fill in the blanks and take notes on the sermon/presentation. I liked how Pastor Harris read the scripture that he was teaching and then related it to issues we are facing today. Negatives from this experience: unfortunately, I do have some negatives. The first thing I noticed is that there is not a cross in the main cathedral area. I was raised in a traditional Methodist Church, so again, not seeing a cross up front was a bit weird for me. I think they need to put a cross in the background on the stage. Secondly, I didn't think I really received a very warm welcome being someone there for the 1st time, people did say hello but also it needs to be taken into consideration this is a big congregation and the service had already started. The usher lady was very warm and friendly. I did feel a bit out-of-place there as I stated before, I am a 41 year old white female and most of the congregation are young black and hispanic people in their 20's and 30's. Although, I did see some white ladies there my age but maybe like 3? Ok, the biggest negative for me from my experience at this church is as follows: I went to this church because I am feeling broken and going through one of hte hardest times in my life right now. At the end of the service, the 2 lead Pastors of the church were in the lobby talking with people. I basically felt like I was waiting in line to talk to "Urban D" Tommy the lead pastor who didn't really even acknowledge me or look my way and say, I'll be with you in a minute knowing I was waiting to speak with him, which kind of gave me a negative feeling. (there was like another couple standing there talking w him). I was going to ask him if the pastors there provide counseling and how could I get counseling and prayer or schedule appointment as I really needed to speak with a pastor about my current problems and receive prayer. Then the 2nd past in charge who gave sermon, Mr. Harris walks up and I asked him if they provide counseling and how could I schedule an appt. with one of them. He then told me that they refer people out to A Tampa Christian Counseling Center for counseling. This shocked and offended me a little bit. I mean really? You don't have time to counsel your people or don't "want" to take the time so you refer them to a place where they have to pay for it and probably can't afford it. I thought this is what Pastors are supposed to do, one of their main job functions to provide counseling?? He stated something about doing it over the phone, but I also thought that was weird. That left a bad taste in mouth and made me feel like they are too overwhelmed and didn't have time for me to pray and counsel me. Not a good feeling for someone to have on their first time to a church. The other church I went too after the service, the Pastor and his wife came up to me, made me feel welcome and this pastor told me to call him if I needed "FREE" Christian counseling and prayer and he would meet with me during the week. That is how it should be. This church was Belmont Baptist Church. So I was searching for a new church and Belmont Baptist Church is the church I will choose because of previously mentioned reason. This church is great for the young, 'Urban" community. Older, conservative white people who have been raised in a traditional Protestant church probably will not like this church. read more

I absolutely love this church. In what other church of this size does the lead pastor wait by the doors after every service and take time to talk and pray with everyone that wants to? If you're looking for a "traditional" (boring) church, this may not be to your taste. Don't get me wrong, the values and the message here are spot on and based firmly in God's Word. No strange doctrines or new age philosophies here. But the style is very modern, contemporary, and fresh. It's a place where you can come as you are and find the love of God. It is inter-generational, and multi-ethnic. If you're searching for truth, if you're searching for God's love, if you're searching for a church where you can feel at home and feel loved, i can joyfully recommend Crossover Church as that place. read more

I love this church. Many people have said it's a good church for new believers but I think it's for both new and old. I grew up in the church, and I must say this is the first time I've felt like I found a place I truly belong. I am excited to hear the message, excited to go to Bible study and excited to get involved. That doesn't just happen, the leadership and member have a big part in making this church as great as it is. read more
