Super fun place to climb for a variety of skill levels. I've been indoor climbing only once or twice before, and I had a blast at Crux. Two of my friends love to climb outdoors and recently bought a monthly membership to Crux so they can improve, and they love this gym as well. You'll find several walls with multiple climbing routes on them of varying degrees of difficulty. There are also several bouldering walls and one wall dedicated to lead climbing, though I didn't try either of those. My friends who have memberships here say that Crux employees change the climbing routes every couple of weeks to keep things fresh and offer new challenges. If you come alone, there are a couple of auto-belay systems that will let you climb safely. That said, you'll be limited to the amount of routes you can climb. If you come with others, make sure that you're familiar with how to belay others who are climbing so that you can pass Crux's belay test help help your group on the ropes. It's a little on the pricey side for a non-climber like me to visit here frequently, but I'd definitely go every 4-6 months with some friends if I was looking for a fun and different workout! read more

Went to Crux Rock gym this past Saturday well the family had a great time while we were there. However, this changed on the way home due to one of our seven-year-olds breaking out in hives or athletes foot Of course, we all rented shoes, and immediately he started itchiness his feet in the car. When we got home, we noticed his discomfort and took off his socks that he was wearing, and his feet were swollen and hives. Called spoke to an associate who said a manager would give me a call after waiting in three hours I decided to call back they apologized said they would go through protocol with their associates better but that does not fix the hives issue he has today or may be athletes foot. When going to this gym maybe bring your own disinfecting spray as none was available. Great place just disappointed this happened would we go back, I doubt it due to procedures not being properly followed. read more

This place saved the mental health of our family when there were still pandemic restrictions in Oregon. We spent hours here and never got bored. The owner and employees are kind and helpful. The membership was worth every penny and more. As far as the actual climbing, the routes were changed up often and there was always a new challenge to attempt. I have rock climbed in gyms all over the US, and by far, at least Kyle, was the rudest person I have ever met. Me and my friend were taking our belay test, as is necessary in every gym. I waited 30 mins as he helped two other people rock climb and gave advice and helped the other group. However, when me and a friend jumped on, he quickly said we failed for the most minute issue. I would note, I was the only person of color at the gym and he seemed to take pride in failing us. I would not recommend. This is the first one star review I have ever given. I tend to try to understand people have bad days, but Kyle was a special kind of rude. read more

*Novice climber review* So my sister and I were watching re-runs of American Ninja Warrior one afternoon and we suddenly got the itch to get our ninja on. We found Crux on Yelp and headed on over. I wasn't sure if we could just go in and start climbing, or if we needed to be trained with the ropes and harnesses. Luckily, you don't need to do all that. There's just one waiver on an iPad to fill out which takes a few minutes. After that, you're good to go. There are lots of cool bouldering walls where you can just climb them without any special equipment (just shoes). The walls don't go super high, and there are soft mats underneath to cushion you when you fall. There's also a good number of bouldering walls so you don't get bored. It was definitely challenging, but a lot of fun and our ninja craving was fulfilled. After about 40 minutes we were pretty spent. It's a good workout. We paid $16/person which is good for 1hr + shoe rental. They change around the grips/holds every month or so to keep things fresh and challenging. I'm glad the bouldering routes seem to change as often as they do. It keeps the experience from feeling too stagnant. However, I'm also glad certain routes don't change that often because it gives me a chance to work on them over time, since I'm still just starting out on this whole climbing business. The staff seem approachable and knowledgeable, and I've seen them all climbing and setting routes at one point or another. It can get busy at times, and, save for a few regulars who think they own the wall, most people are more than willing to give you a turn and space to work on a climb. read more

Good experience for our 2nd time rock climbing. The gym has 4 auto-belays dispersed around the various walls, making it friendly to those who haven't been training with belays. There is a cave climbing portion, a gym upstairs, and a tandem walking beam above. Bouldering occurs in one side, belay climbing in the other. Everything seems relatively clean, staff is nice, and check in process isn't much of a hassle. Not a very big and technology savvy gym as I've seen before, however it does the job. read more

It's also very clean with a nice little drink cafe that has great hot drinks for the upcoming winter. I haven't been to a lot of climbing gyms, but the Crux is easily my favorite. There is a good variety of ways to play here - toprope, autobelays, lead climbing, bouldering, conditioning, ... They make great use of their space - it isn't super expansive, but there still seems to be room for lots of climbers doing lots of different things without feeling crowded. The gym has a good vibe - not glitzy, just a good place to climb. There is a real sense of community among its users, which I'd say is at least partly due to the owners and staff and their vision. The cafe, with excellent drinks and some tasty food treats, is a great place to chill and relax after (or even before) playing. As others have noted, the routes are rotated fairly often so there are usually fresh routes to play on. For those who want to take their climbing skills outdoors, their climbs are rated pretty realistically too - neither over- nor underrated - which can help you guess how your skills might translate to similar outdoor climbs and avoid getting in over your head. read more

Recently moved to Oregon and Crux has quickly become my favorite place! The staff is so kind and welcoming. The facility is clean and has everything you need. They have bouldering, top rope, and lead climbing, as well as four auto-belays which are great if you're climbing solo. They've also done a great job at handling all the changes with covid. They are taking important measures to keep everyone safe while still providing a great place to have fun and get in a workout. I've been going to the Crux since the mid-90's. The new ownership has done some great things and they are always making improvements. The route setting is awesome. The self-belays are great if you are climbing solo. I like to boulder, but after hitting the deck hard at a bad angle (at another gym) I appreciate having the ropes and well-placed draws for lead climbing. The only limitation is the size of the facility. I hope over time they can add more rope climbs. read more

A mellow place to climb that never seems too busy. With my other climbing gym experience being Ironworks in Berkeley -- where people are wall to wall (sideways and vertically, literally) from open to close, this seems pretty refreshing. If you go in on a Sunday afternoon, The Crux is close to dead and you have your choice of routes. Even when it's busy -- like on Tuesday nights -- all of the climbers are so courteous and friendly, making sure that everyone has space to climb and offering encouraging words to haul your sorry behind up the wall. $12 per session, without rental. $16 with harness and shoes. They also offer 1-, 3-, and 12-month passes (with and without rental) and student discounts. Another bonus? Many of the routes change frequently, so the scenery is always changing. read more

Came here as a beginner and loved my experience there. Staff is friendly and does a good job remembering faces and shoe sizes. d: Price is a little steep, but if you go enough, it's worth the money. The bouldering routes were the same the whole month I was there; was hoping they would switch them up. But, at the same time, was handy so I could continue working on routes till I could complete them. Gym equipment upstairs could be less... old, but can't complain. I'm there to climb. Since then, we have both been back several times and I just went to my first women's night. Every visit, I've found the staff at Crux to be incredibly helpful and friendly. I'm new to climbing, and this gym seems to be the perfect place to learn! Their very friendly staff took the time to start from ground zero with me and my friend. The first visit was climbing as the instructor belayed, and the second visit she taught us (very thoroughly) to belay eachother, while still offering her supervision! Friendly staff, good number of bouldering routes, seems like routes get changed often enough. Very much beginner and visitor friendly with good rates and no belay check fees. However, the gym is somewhat dated compared to facilities I've recently been to in other cities and the top rope /lead wall is only 25 feet. The little bit of cardio and weight equipment is nearly archaic, but I guess that's not actually what anyone is there for. No crazy fun features, though the bouldering cave is challenging. Crux could use a little bit of flair, but then again it seems to suit the Eugene persona pretty well. I've been twice and I'm sure I'll be back. read more

A little background on my review: I've been routesetting for 4 years and have coached and climbed across the US at many different gyms. Review is based on the gym itself!! THE SIZE: The gym is VERY small. The smallest gym I've ever been to that wasn't a college gym. You'll be quite cozy with people. Walls are short. Bouldering walls are 10-14ft high though. Pretty good for that! THE BOULDERING: Small, but sufficient. The only space worth really climbing is a small section in the front. 70% of their bouldering is in a small overhang area, which gets really redundant and ridiculous, really fast. THE ROPES: Again, small, but accounts for 1/2 of the facility. The ropes are max 25ft tall...Most routes are between 12-16 moves. Really, really short. Like, if you're falling on these, you won't survive on any real route in the entire world. Lead wall is also 25ft tall...clips every 3 ft. At least it's...safe? (Although I saw people belaying standing 10ft from the wall. I was waiting for his friend to take a "whipper", but no such luck) THE GRADING: Very inconsistent and VERY soft. V0-V3 are pretty much VB/V0. V4s felt like V2s. V5s felt like V3+ Got a bit more consistent at V7 (which still felt like V6-). Didn't rope up, so no comment there. If you climb at any other gym, you'll probably get destroyed by their grading if all you do is climb here. THE SETTING: Opinion is only based on boulders--Nothing stood out. Every climb is pretty basic and straightforward. One or two that might require some thinking or technique, but most are just left right left right. Small/limited walls and no real wall dimensionality limits cool moves (i.e. I didn't climb anything with heel hooks, toe hooks, catches, dynos, cams). Maybe I just picked a bad day to come. HOLD SELECTION: Some good variety. Not any really new shapes, and definitely some old holds, but for a gym that small, not bad. Maybe 2 volumes in the bouldering area. STAFF: There was only one guy working there, who was alright and got us in. For the time I was there however, he was pretty much just bouldering in his street shoes. I couldn't tell if he was trying to impress some regulars or something. Wasn't ever at the desk, but the gym is small, so I guess there's only so much you can do. AMENITIES: They have lead climbing. They have bouldering. They have a pullup bar. They have a campus board. They have a little bit of archaic weight lifting equipment. They have a plethora of cubbies. They have bathrooms. Oh, and a water fountain. Overall Impression: I hear that a new, larger climbing facility is opening across the way in July. I'll probably go to that one next time...and it isn't even open yet! I guess it's better than nothing though! read more

The Crux has friendly and helpful staff, great deals for students, and they provide multiple outlets for climbers. They have cave and boulder problems as well as lead climbing, and they now have auto-belays. (I would even say the Crux is better than Elevation because the crux can provide a fuller rock climbing experience at a better price) read more

Very cool gym with a lot of ropes to climb. They reset routes often enough to keep it interesting and they mix up the styles. The natural wall is nice to get the feel for natural features. They have a good little set of workout gear to keep up training on off climbing days. Small gym but they use the wallspace really well. Was nearly empty on the tuesday night I went, even though it is the only gym in town. Routes were interesting and well set but pretty juggy and rated a lot easier than my home gym. The locker room is decent but there is no space for any non-wall exercise equipment.
