Pretty sweet ambiance. I'd probably give it a higher rating, but I felt like I stood out as probably the only straight male in the bar... I would definitely go back, but definitely not unless I'm with my lesbian friends again. Other than that it was pretty awesome. The decor was somehow in your face, but at the same time pretty sweet. There's just so much crap hanging from the ceiling but it is so festive it's hard not to like. The most entertaining part of my experience was the drag queen who made balloon animals... from a tank that ran through her nipple. No joke. She even twisted together about 5 balloons into a miniature of herself. It was insanely impressive. First let me just say: ignore the bad reviews. It's sad that yelp favors negative reviews in order to get businesses to pay more money to have positive reviews featured. Cubbyhole is a lifeline to the lesbian (and queer) community of NYC. It's a hole in the wall, so of course it gets crowded some nights, but it is filled with your next groups of friends, or even your next girlfriend. Drinks are cheap, the staff is super friendly and supportive of the community, and the patrons are queer AF. It's not a dance club, it's cash only, it's Cheers but for queers. Really tiny place, but I had a lot of fun. The crowd is nice and non pretentious. I was with one of my girlfriends and two guys but that didn't seem to effect our service at the bar. There was a sweet girl that was running ice back and forth. Not really sure what her job title was, but she was willing to bring drinks to our table from the bar since we were posted up in the corner with a table. Thought that was pretty cool, but we were all thrown a little off guard. Ok, first impression? What the FUCK is on the ceiling?! Seriously, simply layers and layers of ornaments and other... stuff? I couldn't really tell. It was all just very shiny, and just waiting to be called out as a fire hazard. Or I guess you could just call it unique. It gives the bar character, I suppose.. This place most certainly testifies to the fact that there are not enough bars of this type in Manhattan. I was surprised to find just how tiny this place was when I got through the door - I kept on looking for the tables in the back, or something, only to find that they don't really exist. The place was seriously about to rip apart at the seams - that's how crowded it was! It was good for rubbing up against your neighbor, ha. I had come with my friend and a few of her gay friends. Turns out that the bartender ignores men, so I become the central drink orderer person. Had some beers on draft, plus some gin tonics (which were not ginny enough), and so on.. To me, New York City nightlife has that special ability to look both glam and grungy at the same time. This bar is no different. The patrons are friendly and everyone seems to genuinely like one another -- if you don't know someone at the beginning of the night, you'll probably know them by the end ;) Space is limited but for some reason, it felt spacious to me. The bartender was friendly and the night I was there, his boyfriend bought everyone a round of shots! For my first exposure to lesbian nightlife in NYC, Cubbyhole was a success. I miss this bar. The bartenders are awesome here. After coming here for a while they stopped carding me, which when you have short (*gay*) hair and a baby face its nice not getting hassled about ID. The drinks are decent and the prices aren't steep. They have a Juke box that people put all sorts of songs on, some of which are amusing. If you come early there is free popcorn. On a very rainy, random Saturday night... I found myself falling into the Cubbyhole. And it actually wasn't that bad of an experience. This place gets a rap for being a lesbian bar (indeed I HAD heard about this place long before I actually stepped inside), but when I was there, all gays were co-existing in harmony. I was there for a little over two hours, and I would say the crowd was predominantly middle-aged lesbians. If that's your thing, then the Cubbyhole is for you. There were really adorable gay men working here; one bartender named "Kristof" I think and a Marky-Mark look-a-like named Andy. I find that noteworthy and random since you would naturally assume girls would be (or want to be) served by girls. Guess not, because everyone was having a bitchin' time. At one point, the biggest crew of lesbians I've seen since moving to New York ordered two pizzas and then started feeding everyone in the bar. It was kind of awesome, and definitely what I would call a magical evening. I didn't eat any of that pizza, but that doesn't mean I didn't want to. As the night wore on, it definitely started getting more and more crowded. This adorable girl next to me ordered some sort of orange juice drink (screwdriver?) and was politely smiling at me, I think hoping to start a conversation... but it was right when I was finishing my last drink. I said bye to her on the way out- I'm ultimately sad I didn't make a new lesbian friend. This place is worth checking out. It may not be my go to place, but definitely a great place to get dry. read more

Small, quaint and forever rammed, this bar is open until 3/4am and you can be sure to meet all types of characters. Went to the Cubby Hole because I've heard great things about the place. It was a must-see on my NYC trip. The place was packed to the gills! The ceiling was awesome, and the place, while small, looked great! However, I guess it was Lesbian night or a Lesbian bar, but either way, the ladies there we're pushy, rude, and even talked about how many guys were in the place (we were a party of four guys and one lady)! The crowd really left a bad taste in my mouth and we were all insulted. It's too bad that this place just isn't as welcoming as I've heard. Maybe it was just that night, but I won't be back. I'll just head over the the Stonewall, Pieces, or Julius, as these places wanted our money and attention. read more

As if a remnant from a bygone era, Cubbyhole is one of three lesbian bars left in the entire city (Cubbyhole, Hen, Gingers) and for that fact alone, I lay down all my stars for Cubby. It's a tiny bar in a quiet neighborhood, but it's an enduring legacy of our great and gay history. Poetics aside, they have $2 margaritas every Tuesday that taste like sweetened lighter fluid but will get you hammered for no more than $8. The music is always good (Robyn is literally always playing) but about a year ago they banned dancing (probably because the space is so small). I find the clientele hilarious and always leave with a good conversation (or more har har har). There are A LOT of gaybies who come from NYU so everyone always looks bright-eyed and impressionable. My only issue is the Straights...THE STRAIGHTS! For some reason straight couples think that gay bars are for them. Y'all are the West Village...every bar on the face of the earth is catered towards straight people. Don't colonize our very limited spaces. read more

Went on a Tuesday and was delightfully surprised by the $2 margarita deal. I loved the bartender. I was able to get four drinks for under $10 and that's JUST for me! The only downside to this place is the size. I wish it was a little bit larger. I was able to sit about 30 min in at the bar. The bathrooms could also be a little cleaner. read more

This has been one of my favorite places for years. It is TINY and can get very crowded. However, the people are nice and friendly and if you get there early, you can always find someone who will start a conversation with you. It is a great place to meet someone for the evening as there are a number of good restaurants in the area. The bartenders can't be beat. This bar is the best! My girlfriend and I visited NYC and decided to stop at Cubbyhole as our last stop on our way out of the city. When we arrived, it was happy hour... we got 2 rail drinks for a bargain. Then, the bartender (Deb) informed us that she had ordered everyone pizza and was giving out free shots. We were thrilled!! Later, I went up to order 2 more rail drinks and Deb gave them to us free of charge because she had gotten our drink order wrong. A little bit later, Deb gave out more free shots. This was an awesome spot with superb decor and vibes... 10/10 recommend. We will definitley be going back to Cubbyhole next time we are in the city!!! read more

I had a great time here 12 weeks ago. Tonight was a disaster. I'm a straight male trying to make friends with locals as I just moved to New York City. The bartender could not have been less friendly. She felt the need to remind me over and over that i was at a lesbian bar. Yes, I know that. But apparently, I was "too aggressive" with the women in the bar by asking questions like "where are you from in the city" and "how is your night going." I'm terribly sorry for trying to make friends at the same bar I had such a fun time at previously. Hence the name cubby people...I visited cubby hole on a Saturday night. This place is exactly like a cubby, small enough for a comfortable 20. Instead it's over crowded with gays and Les. It's the place you go before you actually go out. Be careful not to let the bathroom door hit you! The drinks were pretty good to me so have lots, you'll need it if you insist on staying. I'm turning 33 years' old in 2 days and they won't let me in to celebrate my birthday without a passport or driver's license. I went to great lengths to get this government issued NYC ID. There really is no reason for me to review Cubby. I wouldn't review my grandparents house, it just exists and for that reason it is awesome. Its usually pretty much for certain going to be packed. 2. Its pretty much for certain going to be packed with lesbians. 3. If you come after midnight on a Tuesday there will be no PBR left. You will be forced to consume Coors Light and therefore look like an outsider. 4. The jukebox is purely costumer driven aka the wrong gay gets ahold of it and you're listening to a playlist of Mariah Madonna and Whitney. OR the wrong lesbian gets ahold of it and you hear nothing but...idk crap. 5. You will hear Robyn and Adele. Quite possibly all night. Quite possibly repeated. 6. There is always a line for the bathroom. Which by chance happens to be right across from the bar. So you can totally order a beer while you wait. Or continue the conversation you were having seeing as Cubby Hole is essentially the size of a closet. 7. Straight people come here. This is neither a pro or a con. Its just a fact. 8. After midnight this place turns into your parents basement after the 8th grade dance. People will be making out like there's no tomorrow. 9. You can order food here. Bring food here. I am the ultimate lurker on Yelp but my experience at Cubby Hole forced me to go through the paramount hurdles of logging in just to express my terrible experience at this establishment. This incident happened all in a matter of 5 minutes. On 12/19/14, after a stressful week of work, a bunch of friends and I decided to go to one of the last remaining lesbian-friendly/lgbtq bars because we felt this is one of the remaining safe places we could mingle and chat our hearts out on various lesbian dramas and issues without weird stares and feeling unsafe. Cubbyhole is well-known for its petite dimensions, so we were super lucky to snag a table that was close to the entrance. Also, on that table were left over drinks(not unusual), and someone's Gatorade bottle that was left on the desk that didn't belong to me. This gatorade bottle would define the rest of my decision of coming back to this place ever again. Remember, that gatorade bottle did not belong to me. So after taking my coat off and grabbing extra seats for the rest of my friends, a bartender comes up to me and without even asking if the gatorade bottle was mine, demanded either I throw it out or get kicked out of the bar. First, I told him that it did not belong to me but could throw it out for him if there was a trashcan nearby. Apparently there were no trash cans because remember everyone, every square inch is valuable space for participating patrons of this bar. The bartender offer to throw it out for me. I complied. Wrongest decision ever. Reminder: This gatorade bottle did not belong to me. After the bartender left, I was getting ready to maneuver my way through the crowd to order a drink . I've played so much frogger in my life that I've become an expert at navigating through crowds. Before I could get to the bar, someone tapped me on the shoulder to get my attention and told me that the bartender wanted to speak to me. I turned around and the bartender was barking at me, telling me that I am getting kicked out because the bottle had alcohol in it. I was so confused and felt as if I was wrongfully accused of something that I did not do. I wanted to explain myself but as I got closer to the counter, the bartender purposely walked away to ignore whatever reasoning I wanted to tell him. I know this post may seem as if my night was ruined because of something so miniscule. Also, I'm pretty sure this was all a misunderstanding. Maybe he didn't hear me. However this bartender's tactless approach and attitude to this situation tells me otherwise. He made me feel as if my presence was not welcomed at Cubby. I have never felt so mistreated at an establishment that I valued so much because there really aren't many places left in NYC that caters to lesbians/lgbtq peeps anymore. That night really broke my heart. I don't think I feel comfortable going back to this bar. I thought we were cool Cubby. I guess not. At least Gingers is still there for me. I will continue my usual lurking now. read more

That was so bullshit. Me and my friends, who happened to be people of color, walked into the bathroom to pee. This rude bartender then opened the door...in the middle of me using the restroom...and told us we had to leave. We explained how we were all just using the restroom and he said that he didn't care and that we "shouldn't have been doing crack in the bathroom". That is the worst case of ignorant racial profiling I have ever experienced.
