If you're on the fence about going to Eagle, well just hop off already and get your bum over there. I finally did and realized I had been missing out all this time. This fantastically grungy place is fueled by a mix of thumping beats, leather harnesses, and shirtless men. Even at its busiest, the vibe stays open, fun, and surprisingly well organized. The Wednesday before thanksgiving is apparently known for being the busiest night at the Eagle, and this year's record crowd should have sunk the whole operation, but the staff kept the entire production going smoothly like it was rehearsed. The Eagle's security team deserves direct credit. They managed an impossibly massive crowd without a hitch. Even with thousands trying to get in, the kilometric entrance line and the coat check line that stretched to the roof moved smoothly and never descended into chaos. Dan in particular handled a near-impossible task: recovering my smartwatch from a crowd so packed I had assumed it was gone for good. He somehow retrieved it, safeguarded it, and returned it to me with the utmost professionalism. Music is solid. The vibe is leather and musk. They'll loose your jacket. Went there last night and waited in a 30 minute line just to check my jacket. Kept the ticket till the end of the night. Gave the ticket to the attendant but they had given my jacket to someone else. They told me to wait till the end to see if it was somewhere, which it was no where to be found. They made no offer to replace it. I wear a L they gave me someone else's unchecked S jacket so I could get home in the middle of the winter. They take no responsibility for their actions of not properly taking care of your property. Even when a nice worker there tried to help me the Manager Oscar pretty much just shooed me away. I Eagled regularly pre-pandemic for 10 years, one of my favorite places. It's had its ups and downs with the city and the neighborhood requiring changes, but all in all it's been my favorite late-night bar in Manhattan. On a good night it's packed with a rough sexy vibe and a lot can happen. I went back for the first time post-renovation about a week ago. Lots of straight women there around midnight. LOTS. Probably 30% of the people on the roof were women (fewer downstairs but still some.) Guys, this isn't the place to bring your girlfriends. It is not a zoo for girls where they can watch the animals play. It's a bar for men who want to be around men who look like men. I hope this was just an anomaly the night I went but anecdotally I've heard that there are a lot more women coming now after the renovation and the dance floor. If this is really the trend I'm not sure why I would bother to leave HK to come down here anymore. read more

Bartender was super rude to me. I am not the type to complain about tipping culture but it's ridiculous to have to tip for water?! I feel like it's common courtesy for bars to supply water to their guests so they can stay hydrated and sober up. I'm from California where they usually have water and cups already out for self serve. I ordered 4-5 vodka sodas through out the night and tipped the bartender $2-3 every time. I asked for water once after that but tipped because I had an extra dollar left. After that, I asked for water two more times but didn't tip. I didn't feel like it was really necessary to tip for water? When I asked for water again the bartender handed me the water but angrily went on a rant saying I'm asking for too much water. And he said he would have to charge me next time if I asked for another one. He repeated himself twice pointing straight at me saying loudly "You're asking for too much water. If you ask again I'm gonna charge you for it" purposely in front of other customers to make me feel embarrassed. Horrible service. I'm sure it's because I didn't tip the past two times I asked for water and asked again. If he was a true bartender he would happily serve me water to make sure I'm hydrated. We came to NYC to celebrate my 50th birthday and decided on the Eagle, Sunday, August 6th. While at the Eagle, we met bartender Richard who we kept coming to for drinks and tipped throughout the night. We chatted up with him, informed him that we were celebrating my 50th b-day come midnight. We ordered a round of shots & chasers which he set up for us come midnight; midnight came, we took our shots and chasers. I later came back to Richard and asked for water. Richard turns away from the bar, took 3 steps and reached into the fridge, pulls out a bottle of water. I was all out of cash so I told him that a glass of water would be fine. Richard's demeanor instantly changed & his expression was obvious he was upset. Richard went on a rant, "You should have said something from the beginning. This happens all the time..., I know who you are (Richard acknowledged the relationship we had established earlier). He gave me the class of water and continued to lecture me. He then stated, "So what are you going to ask for next time you want water?" I am looking at him the entire time to see if he is joking/waiting for him to crack a smile; but nothing. So I answered him in a sarcastic manner, "I will ask for a GLASS of water next time?" At this point I rounded up my people, explained what occurred and insisted we leave and we left. All that over a freaking water bottle??? Needless to say, this put a damper on my 50th b-day celebration at the Eagle! I guess Richard really did want credit on that water bottle sale. read more

I usually try to spin through here if I'm visiting the city on a weekend. One of the best parts is an outdoor bar on the roof: even in cold weather it's nice to experience. No need to explain this type of bar, you like it or you don't. At the bare minimum it's a great people watching, live-affirming, diversity expanding experience! The music is pretty loud inside is my only complaint but that's expected, less talking more looking. read more

Either you get it or you don't. One gets the feeling that as the years go on, activities have been calmed down or downright discouraged. Drinks are expensive and they don't take cards, but it is a historic bar catering to the leather/fetish community so it's a mixed blessing. To be honest I'm surprised it's survived this long. I was just at the Eagle this past week, 6-28-24 to 7-1-24. The last time I was there was in the late 90's and had a great time. The bar has improved and i was there 3 nights in row. Lots of very hot men of all races, and I felt very comfortable and had so much of a good time, I was escorted out of the building and I should have been lol! Saturday Night Rip-Off Just arrived by Uber to have a quick drink, only to discover that there's a $20 cover charge. The Management knows damn well that the Eagle is one of the few gay bars in the city with an outdoor area, and so is taking advantage of the fact during the Pandemic. Besides the $20 admission fee, I end up paying $12/drink (excluding tip) for 3-4 drinks during the evening, wait in line 15 minutes just to get to the rooftop, then stand around for hours not meeting anyone. (NYC leather queens are too busy gossiping with their clique-mates.) At 2:00 am, I decide to go home alone, paying for another pricey Uber. I should never have left in the first place. Would have been better off watching Netflix. read more

Place is very limited to Wednesday and Sundays. Any other day this place is dead. Bar tenders are rude. Even the non bartenders, Specifically Joe, felt the need to push around paying customers because he was carrying a case of of beer. Joe really is the reason for this review. He really needed a power trip as a bar employee to yell at me and my friends for walking in front of him when he was carrying a case of beer. He physically pushed one of us and told us to get out of the way, we had no idea he was behind us. However, this is the customer service you can expect from this place, as all the employees cover for each other. I really hope joe felt visible for once in his life. read more

Let's be real: you already know if The Eagle is for you or not. Either you're into partying with an Eagle crowd, or you aren't. You know whether or not you're OK with the typical shenanigans at this type of bar, or if you're not. Me? I'm a fan, and I had a great time. I ended up spending most of a Sunday at The Eagle, enjoying Beer Bust. Considering how expensive everything is in Manhattan, $4 beers definitely hit the spot. There was a pretty good crowd, made more dense by the fact that they keep the upstairs closed off until 7pm. Friendly guys that got... friendlier... as their BAC began to rise. I really liked the DJ, and I wish that more people would have been into dancing. But nope, this crowd isn't quite the dancing type. Once the upstairs did open, it was fun to explore. The setup of this bar is pretty great. I like the rooftop quite a bit, and I want to come back in the summer to see this place at 100%. The crowd was all pretty great and I had no problems making friends for the night. Not all Eagles are created equal.
