The prices are indeed steep and the selection is modest but better than most small town grocery stores I have ever seen. The produce selection was fair but the quality was BAD! On the good side of things...The bathrooms were clean and the help was friendly so I give them a bonus star for that. Also, the store was very clean and looked well stocked. I've been here before, and the customer service has been good each go-round. The store is fairly organized and clean. I noticed some great deals on their Kroger branded items. They eased the inflation-induced budget a little. Not much, but a little. At night I noticed the lighting in the parking lot was okay. Could be brighter, but overall it seems to be a safe area. I like grocery shopping here far more than other places in Alamosa. Bring your own bags or gripe about being charged for plastic. Your choice.

I don't know if the high prices are due to the "trapped" population. This store is consistent and is a good place to stop to pick up a couple things if you come in off the highway. Its kind of weird though with carpeting that give people static shocks. I saw one guy doing self checkout and he got such a loud crack of static that the checkout wand went flying out of his hand and landed 30 feet away, luckily it did not strike anyone. NM has the highest percentage of people on snap, and the prices here are high because it is the only grocery in this town

Since moving to the San Luis Valley, Sam's Club is not accessible to me anymore (unless I drive 2-1/2 hours to Pueblo), so I looked into Valley Meat. The price of their beef short ribs is actually comparable, if not less expensive. I've also bought pork belly, and they cut them to however I want them. Meats that are not available at Walmart, City Market or Safeway, I buy them at the Valley Meat Market. Recently, I bought ox tail there. I have two large German Shepherd dogs. I buy quartered raw femur bones regularly at Valley Meat with prices that do not break the bank. My dogs love them!!! I have to mention that the folks at the meat market are also very nice and friendly. As soon as you walk in, someone will immediately help you. If you do not like to wait, give them a call and place your order. Just let them know when you want to pick up, they'll have your order ready for you. Try them...they have excellent fresh meat!!!
