So, after 15 minutes, I went to the receptionists and suggested I could be doing the paperwork while I waited. I was a new patient so I thought there should be some paper to complete. I was told that sometimes patients are not asked to fill out paper until after the doctor has seen them. After waiting for an hour and 15 minutes, I again went to the desk to ask if Dr, Atkins was in surgery. The two ladies there said "no". I was told that Dr. Atkins falls way behind schedule cause he likes to chat with his patients. I told them I was leaving and asked my copay be returned. I also asked them to convey to Dr. Atkins that I do not need another BFF!! Running real late early in the day????? Nope, I'm sitting waiting while he's in the back making friends. I live in Metairie and Dr. Mohnot is located on the Westbank, but I decided to give him a try because of the strong recommendation I received. I am so glad I did! I have no problem driving across town for a doctor as wonderful as Dr. Mohnot and his team. He has been very thorough when working with my migraines. He did bloodwork, an EEG, and has me keep a headache log. We tried a few different medicines until we found the perfect combo. Unlike other doctors I have had, once we found that combo, he still has me come in every 3-4 months and keep a headache log so that we can keep on top of how I am doing and so any changes do not get out of hand. He is very thorough, polite, friendly and takes time with his patients. Because he takes time with each patient, the office tells you to call in 30 minutes before your appointment so they can let you know if he is running behind and that way you know if you should adjust your schedule and you don't feel you are wasting your day in the waiting room. I love this! Everyone in the office is friendly and helpful. It is all top notch. I highly recommend them!

My experience with Dr. Deputy at Children's Hospital today was not good. I took my son, who has…read moreautism, to see him because he was referred by his psychiatrist and professional counselor because he has had a severe decline in his academic performance recently. The psychiatrist actually told me not to go to this particular doctor and recommended a couple of others. But I went to this one because my son (a teenager now) had gone to him at age 3. The problem was that Dr. Deputy did not seem to believe that my son was actually having a regression. When I tried to persuade him to rethink this possibility and/or look into other incidences of a regression at adolescence in kids with high functioning autism, he talked over me (as in he interrupted me and just talked while I as talking). He did not listen to me when I tried to talk about his history since he last saw him at age 3. And in fact he sent me out of the room back into the waiting room. He stated that he wanted to talk to my son alone. Apparently he asked questions about my son's medical history regarding medications he had taken in the past and the side effects. The problem with that is that my son has cognitive and verbal deficits. He is not capable of giving an accurate medical history. So when I came back in he reiterated what my son apparently said about his experience with stimulant medications. And it was not correct because my son really can't remember or verbalize something that complicated. Further, Dr. Deputy did not want to speak to any of the other professionals that work with my son including the referring psychiatrist, the psychologist who did recent IQ testing, the education specialist or the counselor my son is seeing or his teacher. He could have easily gotten a lot of information from these professionals. I pressed the issue, but he refused to believe that my son was having this problem (a decline in cognitive functioning). Then he turned the question on me and asked me what could be happening organically to cause a regression in my son, as if my not being able to tell him what was going on in my son's brain would mean that there is not an actual problem. (That is why I took him to a neurologist, to find out what is going on.) He did not think that any further testing was warranted. He did not consider the possibility of seizures (a problem seen in many kids with autism--with onset at puberty). Rather, he did a very general exam involving an eye chart, and asking my son to remember 3 words and asking him to name the months of the year backwards. And he tapped his knee caps. Then he gave a series of well rehearsed general blurbs about topics that were related to my son, but not pertinent to why we were there. For example, he talked about how important exercise is even though my son and I told him that he works out with a trainer, is in kung fu lessons weekly and is on a bowling league. And even though we told him and wrote on the forms that he has tried over 7 different stimulant medications over the last 9 years with a well known experienced psychiatrist in town, he proceeded to explain the process of how to do a trial of a stimulant medication and make medication recommendations. And he explained to me that adolescence is a difficult time psychologically. (Keep in mind that I am a licensed mental health professional with lots of experience with adolescence. And even if I was 'just a mom' I think that it is common knowledge that adolescence is a tough time.) Just several very one size fits all speeches-no dialogue, just monologues. Honestly, I think it is possible that he himself is on the spectrum. But here is the kicker....at one point he actually made a gesture with his hand where he reached out towards me and tapped in the air with his fingers as if he was patting me on the head and sarcastically said "ok mom" while I was talking. The psychiatrist was disturbed when he found out that he did not even mention an MRI. So I am following up with Ochner's with a neurologist that he recommended in the first place. So that was a total waste of time.

God bless Pediatric Emergency Room Physician Mark Carbon and the entire staff in Children's…read moreHospital New Orleans' (CHNOLA) emergency room. Thursday started off like any other day and my 2.5 year old son seemed his normal self, except for a low grade fever of 99 degrees. Fast forward 5 hours and my son still had a 99 degree fever, but he whined of being tired and became very lethargic in a fairly short period of time. I got the call at work and instructed my wife to bring him directly to CHNOLA's E.R. as she was already fairly close by and he was still responsive but very lethargic. Not wanting to incriminate myself, I'll just say I MAY have exceeded the posted speed limits exponentially in an effort to meet them there; and actually beat them there by 2 minutes. Upon her arrival to the E.R., my son was very lethargic and went into a seizure. We were immediately brought into the back of the E.R. and assessed by Dr. Carbon; who immediately and decisively took charge. Within a few minutes my son was being treated by a team of 9 professionals and we were asked to step back to allow the additional personnel to his bedside. It's a scary sight to see the trauma team cutting your kids clothes off, as you know they sensed the urgency. However, they never asked us to leave the E.R. and I'm glad as we wanted to be by his side. (For the record, they was no way that I was ever going to leave his side) Our son's seizure or low tolerance to the seizure medicine Ativan caused him to lose control of his airway and he had to be bagged and then intubated. And when the intubation tube wasn't quite in the right place, Dr. Carbon calmly ordered it removed and a new one inserted. For anyone who's seen this performed in person on a loved one, I can assure you that it is difficult to watch; especially when it's your only child. But Dr. Carbon conducted this medical team of respiratory therapists (Byron), neurologists, pulmonologists and nurses with a calmness that was reassuring; or at least as reassuring as it could be under the circumstances. He was a steadfast professional that triumphed under pressure; especially the pressure of 2 overly concerned parents. But even as he was fully involved in giving orders and making decisions, he still took time to quickly answer our questions while he worked. It didn't take long for the E.R. to diagnose his virus, as it was one of the 17 most common kid viruses they test for. I'm not sure how much time passed before he was stable enough to be transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care unit (PICU), but each second felt like an eternity; And I'm hoping that we thanked him on the way out. But like I said, we were overwhelmed with emotions and wanted to stay at our son's side as he was wheeled up to the PICU. So thank you Dr. Mark Carbon and thank you to everyone on duty Thursday night, as you truly did save our son's life. FYI - In 24 hours, our son was released from the PICU and placed in a regular room. And 20 hours later we were home.
