The triage desk person deserves an Emmy, a raise, and a federal holiday. I don't know what kind of witchcraft, sorcery, or divine intervention is happening at the Culver City DMV, but I was in and out in 30 minutes. Thirty. Minutes. I've waited longer for coffee at Starbucks. I came mentally prepared for battle -- snacks, water, a survival plan -- and somehow walked out like I'd just visited an efficiency-themed spa. At the front desk was this colorful, larger-than-life DMV gatekeeper, triaging people like an air traffic controller on espresso. This person deserves a statue. They were moving folks through the line with the precision of a symphony conductor and the sass of a stand-up comic. I've seen less organization at hospital ERs. No chaos. No drama. Just efficiency with flair. The check-in line looked intimidating, but it flowed like a well-oiled bureaucracy machine. Staff were friendly (yes, friendly -- I had to double-check I was still at the DMV), and everyone seemed to actually know what they were doing. It's like they took all the bad DMV energy from the rest of California and converted it into pure competence. The Culver City DMV runs smoother than most Hollywood productions. I didn't lose three hours or my will to live -- 10/10 experience. DMVs in California have been around since 1915, but this one feels like it was built last week and staffed by people who actually care. It's clean, organized, and -- dare I say -- pleasant. I never thought I'd use "pleasant" and "DMV" in the same sentence without being investigated. The Culver City DMV is a rare government miracle -- fast, friendly, and efficient. The triage maestro at the front deserves sainthood, and the whole team should teach a masterclass in public service. I walked in expecting despair and left with a renewed license and renewed faith in humanity.

    Lots of people waiting!

At the end of the day I was very pleased with the outcome. I tried to do as much online as I could but the website I would rate as 3 stars to be honest. In my case I needed a CA driving license (my last CA license had expired in 2009, my last US license (TX) had expired in 2020 and since then I had been driving on my British DL) and so I assumed that I would have have to pass the written test. Even though the website says that you can do it online - at least in my case no luck! I tried repeatedly but it never permitted me to do so. And would say - next step go to the right DMV! So I did. In the meantime I did on line "tests" to learn all the rules (again). I arrived at DMV and I did not have an appointment (the website would not allow me to). That's where the problems started - where to line up, where to ask questions. Some staff just said blithely - scan the QR card and walked away. There are MANY QR codes so not helpful at all! So why then 5 star rating? Because of two staff in particular first the beautiful, kind lady who showed me the right QR code and assisted me in that process (I do QR codes all the time but this?!) and then I sat and waited for over an hour and a half. Then I was called up and another beautiful, kind, patient lady got me through that process. She could have not been helpful - for instance I had to give the San Diego address from my CA license that expired in 2009. I had no clue - but she helped me solve that problem and more!! Thump print, quick sight test - then off for photo and written test which I passed My tip - just be really nice, respectful and kind to the staff - of course some of them hate their jobs - put yourself in their place and you too will get your license!! One more tip - please obey the rules that you just learned!!!!

You'd think they're giving away food or something...so sad, the lines...

Driver's License renewal tips and suggestions. I thought I would post this as I had a less than stella experience while trying to renew my license. Approximately three months prior to my license expiring, I received an email from the DMV reminding me to renew. It had the following requirements: During your visit, you are required to: --- Pay the renewal fee --- Take a vision test --- Provide your fingerprint --- Have your photo taken I have some trips planned in the next couple of months so I thought, for once, I would jump on this and get it done early. So I went to the DMV website to set an appointment. On the main page, there's a pulldown menu for Appointments that has "Get in Line" and "Schedule an Appointment". I tried the appointment first but renewing your license is not an option. So I tried the Get in Line option. That worked great. Pick you location, it shows you approximately how long the "line" is and allows you to sign up. The wait time was 25 minutes and I'm 20 minutes from the DMV. I signed up and jumped in the car. When I arrived, I received a text that my number was about to be called. I had to show my text to the guard at the door as there were more than 100 people standing outside waiting to get in. He let me in and told me to take a seat. I did and about 5 minutes later, I was called. I went to the window and said I'm here for my renewal. She said, "Did you complete your application online?". I said, no, the email didn't mention it. She said I had to do that first and then go back to the website and "Get in Line". First delay... They have a section with several self-service kiosks to complete the application. Pretty easy, just need your driver's license number, SSN, and to know your basic information. You had to write down the application number it shows you at the end. I did it, then on my phone, went back to the DMV website and got back in line - now showing 30 minutes. After about 40 minutes, I was called back to another window. She tells me I'm early to renew. If I do it now, 3 months before my license, I need to re-take the written exam. I hadn't studied so I was hesitant. After going back in forth about how the email didn't mention it, she said if I waited until next month, two months before my renewal, I won't have to re-take the exam. So...delay number two. I decided to wait a couple of week so I wouldn't have to study and re-take it. Two hours later, I'm heading back home. Moral of the story? When the DMV sends you a renewal notice, wait until it is at least two months before your birthday, complete the renewal application online, write down that application number, and use the Get in Line feature to save some time. Hope your experience is better than mine and...enjoy!

    Lazy DMV employee

This employee refused to perform a VIN verification, despite the VIN being plainly visible in its factory location in the windshield, and demanded I go to CHP for a VIN verification. Rude and lazy, the kind of employee who sadly lends credence to the negative stereotypes about public servants.

I was at Window 10 on Friday April 3rd around 10:30a. She had glasses and a mask on, and the guy working next to her seemed cool; they had a good rapport going on while getting things done. Moving onto the photo process, this is never fun but the lady here was nice as well. I guess my head was tilted way too much so I had to retake, but I know either way, it will resemble hell in human form so it's okay. I arrived with an appointment so things went well, but even without one, sometimes they can still take you at a decent time depending on the day, etc. Still recommend an appointment regardless just to be safe. Parking lot always has spots which is helpful. Received my new card about a week later, and I had to laugh since my head WAS kind of tilted. I'm stuck with this for the next five years and I'm fine with that. I've been back a few times for registration information and even though it's different than the ID line, employees were still as helpful as could be. What the issue was, is that there were 2 African American women workers at the front door to help people, but were insanely rude to EVERYONE. I believe one was actually a security guard. During my hour of waiting I never interacted with either of them but about every 10 minutes they started belittling and giving attitude to new customers for no reason! A lady was having trouble at the self help kiosk and she politely asked for help. The worker tells her "you rushin and ain't tryna read the prompts!" "You insert your card! You ain't neva insert yo card at da regista?" Turns out the machine was not reading any cards. Multiple people were having problems with the machine. Anyone that questioned why the worker was being rude to them instantly got confronted by the security guard. I never even talked to either of these workers but seeing them talk to the other customers infuriated me that our tax money is paying people so rude and unprofessional to customers that were asking questions politely.

I was given a number and was called to proceed to a certain window in less than 10 minutes. I came here to process my car's title and registration. I came prepared with all required documents (Real Driver's License, bill of sale, car title, proof of insurance) and was prompted to pay the registration fee.
