The Hollywood DMV is not where you expect to feel a rush of victory (like at all) but somehow, that's exactly what happened. I booked my appointment online, walked in on a Monday morning (traditionally the DMV's version of rush hour), and braced for bureaucratic purgatory. Long weekend and i'm bracing myself or maybe I just have insane luck at these things (2nd review of a dmv -- santa monica) which turned out to be a easy process too. Instead, the entire operation moved with the efficiency of a pit crew at the Indy 500. Within minutes I was checked in, guided to the right window, and treated by staff who were super cheerful, helpful, and fully awake to the concept of customer service. No sighs, no eye-rolling, no mysterious lines that lead nowhere. Just competent people moving things along with surprising grace. I took my renewal test online, so all I needed were paperworks and some confirmation numbers to them. All like that - then a new photo and signed the temp license I got and I was done. Yes, hard to believe, but I had a 5 star experience at the DMV Hollywood location. Went to get the stupid Real ID Drivers License on July 3rd without an appointment. I tried to make one in May, but all of July was already booked. So I decided to try a walk-in experience one day before a major holiday thinking it may not be so busy. I got all of my paperwork together that was required (Birth Certificate and two different types of bills with my name and address on them. I brought my SCE and Gas bills with me). I arrived shortly after they opened (8a) and it was relatively quiet. I was ushered into a room to take a quick Q&A on a computer. It took all but three minutes. I was then told to get in line near window 9 to have my documents approved. There were two lines and they were short and moving. Once my documents were approved, they texted me a number for my appointment. I only had to wait about 20 minutes before my number was announced. After arriving to my window for the in person appointment, my documents were scanned, I reviewed and approved my application, paid the fee, and off I was to the line to get my picture taken. That line was short and my picture was taken in less than 5 minutes. I autographed my name for the license and I was finished. Everyone that worked there was friendly enough. They weren't overly kind, but not rude at all. They were almost robot like. I was in-and-out in under an hour. Excellent! As I was leaving it was definitely getting busier. I stopped at this DMV when I realizedI had some extra time for help in replacing a Driver's license and obtaining an ID card as well. Each staff member I encountered was very friendly and although they were busy, they finished with their current visitor and directed me to the tasks I would need to complete to obtain my replacement driver's license and ID card. As I was first directed to fill out forms to help me along, I had questions. Each time I had a question a staff member was always nearby helping others and myself. This DMV in Hollywood on Cole seems to be able to handle a walk-in like me as well as others who were there to take a written or driving test. Parking was quite adequate. I highly recommend this DMV. I usually go to the DMV Office located in Glendale, but since this place was closer to me, I visited this place for the first time. First, I would highly recommend making an appointment online. Once I arrived there, it wasn't very busy, but I'm still glad that I made an appointment. Once you check in, wait for your number to come up. Plenty of seats. Bring something to read in case you get bored easily. Once it's your turn, everything goes smoothly. You get directed as to where you should go next. The camara line for the Real ID had two people working the two camaras. Only bad thing is that there's no mirror which I hated, so I have NO IDEA how ugly my pic will be. Plenty of free parking. DMV - Dreaded, maddening, and vile are words I associated with this irritating institution when I needed to renew my license and finally get a Real ID. So many friends had warned me that it took them hours. Some even had to return another day!!! I filled out everything I possibly could online, but I was informed that I had to make a personal appearance at one of their outlets. I tried to make an appointment at my usual DMV, but none were available. In fact, I couldn't make an appointment ANYWHERE nearby!!! Somehow, I stumbled on the online Get In Line feature. Of course, I couldn't get in line at my regular DMV, but I discovered the one in Hollywood wasn't too far away. Once I inputed my info, I was informed I was #46 in line. I could see on my computer that the line was moving fairly fast. Despite the text they sent me, I couldn't see my spot in line on my phone, though! By the time they reached #36 on my computer, I figured I should throw on some clothes and bring all of my required documents. When I arrived, I nabbed the last parking space in their free, enclosed lot. There were a lot of people outside of the building as well as in it, so things didn't seem promising. I had no idea where to go, so the helpful security guard explained how they would call and announce my number. On the electronic board, I could see that there were only 8 more people in front of me! Within 5 minutes, it was my turn, and the board directed me to a numbered window. An efficient woman asked for my documents, which I promptly handed over. I was surprised when she told me I had to do an eye test. I wasn't prepared at all! After my documents were returned and I forked over $45, I was told I also had to get a new photo. UGH! Hadn't planned on that, either. My first one must have been awful because they let me redo it. Then, I was sent to another room where I signed a form and was given a temporary license. All in all, I probably spent less than an hour at the DMV!!! What a miracle! Do Make a Vital appointment or at least Get In Line online. read more

From the woman with the big smile who signed me in 20 minutes early (no one else in the appointment or non-appointment line!) To the cheerful woman at Window One who patiently went through all the many DMV emails I brought with me and gave me the eye test. To the man who alleviated my fears over what the driver's license photo would look like. To the Officer who helped me center my finger on the reluctant little fingerprint pad and then directed me to the man with the reassuring smile who punched out my old license and stamped my new temporary one and sent me on my way. Easy to get my Real ID. I did everything online. Took the test which was easy, uploaded pictures of my documents, made the payment and got my code. I didn't make an appointment because they were booked 6 weeks in advance. I arrived at the Cole Ave DMV around 8:15 AM and there were about 25 people on line on the sidewalk waiting. I went to the person near the door and showed him my code and he told me to go right in, no waiting outside. Inside I was on a line with about 15-20 people checking in. This took about 15 minutes and they gave me a number. I went to the waiting area and sat down. It took about 20-25 minutes before they called my number. Then I went to a window, took the eye test which took about 20 seconds. Then I went to get my picture taken. After that I went to another room and was given a printout of Real ID interim papers. Total time at the DMV: about 45 minutes. They were well organized and efficient. My Real ID came in the mail 2 weeks later. read more

Walk-In: License renewal to a Real ID. We had all necessary documents with us. Pleasant. Stress-Free. Bring your patience. Some folks sniffling/coughing, so plan accordingly. *Everything done online prior to. *Couldn't schedule an appointment online, so we attempted a walk-in (Thursday at approximately 9:45am) *Plenty of parking in their clean lot. *Approximately ten people in front of us in the walk-in lane (immediately to the left after going through the front entrance) *One employee working both the walk-in and appointment lanes, but still only took us about 20 or so minutes. She was relieved by another employee when we reached the front who was pleasant to deal with. *Less than ten minutes at check-in and we got our number -- G117 and the screen showed they were already at G105. *Once you're checked in, they text you with updates in the event you want to wait in your vehicle. *About 15 minutes seated and our number was called. *It took less than 15 at the processing counter with another pleasant employee. Temp License provided. *We were then directed to the photo line. No one in line, so we spent about 5 minutes there. *Done. Real ID in about three weeks. VETERANS headed to the DMV-- this review is specifically for you. Unlike other states, California has decided to make getting the "Veteran" designation on your REAL ID unnecessarily complicated. The process right now is that you have to find a County Veteran Service Office (whatever the HELL that is?) to get a Veteran Status Verification Form (VSD-001) and then bring that form to the DMV. Why do I need to do all of this when my military ID card is sitting in my wallet?? A military ID that is sufficient to get me on to bases?? My guess is that the staff at the DMV don't want to be bothered with understanding military identification cards. They refused to look at it today. So I couldn't get the Vet designation that I earned because of BUREAUCRACY. I just sent a letter to Steve Gordon, the head of the DMV. Furthermore, when I did the application for the REAL-ID on the DMV.gov website, at NO POINT did it prompt me with: "Hey, in order to get Veteran designation, you need to go fill out this OTHER form." Sidebar -- that DMV website is glitchy AF. Needless to say, that when I went to the Hollywood DMV this morning, I did not have this random VSD-001 form. The California government in general should be trying to make life easier, not more challenging for Veterans. Between this and California TAXING military retirement pay, there is no reason for a Veteran to remain a California resident. I surely won't be. I walked in at 8:30am and wait times weren't bad so one star for that. But I subtracted a star for the noisy and chaotic area where they make you take the written test STANDING UP. Thank goodness I was in multiple wars and have the ability to focus during bedlam. read more

I went to renew my Real ID. I brought all the necessary legal documents approved by the state, which were the same documents the DMV had requested from me a month ago. However, they suddenly said their internal regulations had changed. I couldn't renew my Real ID, and I didn't receive proper documentation or explanation. They said I couldn't renew my Real ID with my I-797 form, nor could I even switch to a regular driver's license. Then why did they allow me to get a Real ID in the first place? The supervisor just sat there, and the employee yelled at me and threw the documents on the table. At the very least, the supervisor should have provided a proper explanation. They were terrible supervisors and employees. read more

Truly, it was a very complicated situation that involved with the tax franchise, which they took care of it, which I was really happy, so only paid a certain amount of money, which was not the amount I was expecting, which is much better than what I would've been expecting. The operations at this DMV makes no sense. At certain times, you are able to save a seat online. But at other times, you aren't and have to physically come in here. You first line up to be seen (in my case, just to be told to go to the application line). After finishing my application and getting my 8 digit number, you have to go BACK into the original line to be given a F/G-#. So you're waiting in twice the lines but for only one reason. I made multiple attempts to complete the online application, but for some reason... neither my passport nor my SS card were successfully recognized by the system. So...I tried to make a DMV appt. online, but my information could not be matched. ABSOLUTELY dreaded having to go to the DMV. Shockingly?... On a Monday morning, I walked in at around 10 AM and then walked out almost exactly an hour later. The folks at this location are efficient. And professional. I had to go to several different stations (e.g. non-appt. line, REAL ID app. line, camera line, etc.), but everything went quickly and smoothly. Examiner 508. Very rude and snarky plump woman, she tests to fail you. Immediately switch instructors if u get her. From the moment she stepped out the doors her demeanor let me know it was gonna be a rough ride. She didnt even say hello she just asked me for my permit and then proceeded with signals etc. I asked her how her days was she said good, thank you. Clearly not by how she was acting. She was clearly trying to fail me and I wish I had a dash cam to prove it. On one occasion there was a yield sign into and intersection. I was going because it was my light, and before it changed I was already heading into my lane which was clear btw. Then she tells me to stop because there is incoming traffic... When my lane is clear btw, I dont know if she thought I was gonna jump into the next lane or what but I didnt know she could read minds. Marked me for disobeys traffic signs. Great. Not too far away there is a green light, and Im supposed to take a left. I admit I could have been more aggressive, but the car in front of me incoming was turning left, and there was a guy about to enter the intersection to cross. So I waited. I was already uncomfortable because of her intervention before so Id hope she could understand my mistake. So when we get back to the dmv she writes a while 12 point font, 1 page, 5 paragraph essay on what I did wrong. She didnt even complete marking my paper and she did all that bs. Her phone went off right before so maybe she was rushing. Very unprofessional. The turn was literally a block away from the dmv so it wasn't because of the critical error. She told me my test was like a practice run. The staff inside was great and very quick. Great job, but the examiners ruin your rep. Hire better! read more
