The other reviewers were right about the prices--they are universally outrageous. A small container of Mexican Street Corn was $20. The corn was delicious, but for the quantity it is robbery. Two sausage rolls were just okay--pastry was damp, sausage was middling. Baseball stadiums have better. Food trucks have tastier. A few other things were good, but worth the money? Only as a gallon container, not a lunch-sized morsel. We did not encounter any rudeness--everyone was just fine. Weather was good though. Oh...the small mac & cheese we got was superb. I mean, sure, it's mac&cheese but still: great flavor, topping, thick cheesy sauce. That was memorable. Is it overpriced? Peobably not for the area--lota of multi million dollar homes in the neighborhood. Catered lunches over lawn bowling will be tasty. For a picnic...maybe look elsewhere. Everything here was really quite neatly packaged, displayed and arranged. We came during a weekday afternoon so we didn't have to navigate a lunch rush or anything crazy. My parents had received a gift card for this place so we wanted to have a look around and pick up some meats. Everything definitely had a fancy feel to it, though we will have to cook up our goodies to know if there's truly a quality difference. It was all incredibly expensive and definitely not a normal shopping trip for us. We had fun looking around to see what items they had and I was particularly interested in their sauces and ready to eat foods. I will say, I was disappointed to find the vinaigrette on display was expired and they didn't have anymore in stock. But they atleast pulled it out the shelf right away and did try to check in the inventory for more. Some staff were very kind and sweet, the younger gentlemen and ladies. They were very helpful with recommendations and helping us wrap our selections. I found though that a few of the older staff were quite rude and dismissive. Very huge contrast and the inconsistency is off putting. I thought maybe it was a discrimination thing, but then I could over hear them treating other patrons the same way. As though they had no patience left to deal with customers. At payment, we actually we're not told the total. The girl just asked us to hand her the card so she could swipe..... I thought that was very rude. I don't even know how much we're paying... My card should never leave my hands. I used to love this place at the old (Bayview ) location but after they moved in 2017, they only hire less-skilled butchers and cashiers. I get better customer service at Walmart with less attitude. I bought a 2.5-pound bone-in rib steak and cooked to rare doneness in a cast iron pan. Finished it basting it (with fresh garlic, fresh Thyme and butter) It looked amazing but when I cut into the medium-rare steak, but it tasted like it came from a supermarket and not a premium butcher. Hello, it's Christmas Day and I'm extremely disappointed because my boyfriend and I ordered a 20-pound turkey 6 weeks before Christmas that was supposed to be completely deboned (minus the wings and the legs were a maybe) and I go to Cumbrae's to pick it up and they assure me that although it only says brined on the tag it was deboned and they checked. Well they obviously didn't check and we paid nearly $135.00 for a regular turkey - not deboned whatsoever. Our family was expecting this special recipe that required the deboning and now we have to have a traditional turkey. I am surprised that Cumbrae's which is well-known and highly rated did this. Update: I messaged Cumbrae's on Christmas Day and they got back to me immediately saying they will refund me in full for the turkey. They admitted their mistake and made up for it. Shopped at Cumbrae's on Bayview yesterday and was VERY disappointed by their handling of the processing a refund of a overpriced item by both the cashier and manager on duty. Purchased a number of items including 3 similarly-sized Provimi Veal Ribeyes. After checking out at the cash I carefully scrutinized my bill and noticed that 2 were priced at $20.39 and $18.89 one at $29.99 (the price per pound). When I brought this to the cashier's attention she shruuged her shoulders and said that "they are priced by weight". I insisted that she re-weigh all 3 Provimi Veal Ribeyes then low and behold the $29.99 item should've been priced at $20.99 (see attached photos). It wasn't even weighed out on the original price tag. The cashier was completely uncertain what to do so I insisted on speaking with the Manager on duty. So, Evan, the manager, arrived on the scene, seemingly unconcerned at all about the pricing anomaly blaming it on "human error". No apology was offered, and he retrieved a $10 dollar bill from the cash, tossed it on the counter, saying "how's that?". Any member of the Cumbrae's management team with even a sliver of customer service-orientation would have immediately gone to the products on display to inspect for similar errors that might be in need of rectification. Then profusely apologize to the customer for the error. Finally, compensate the customer for the full erroneous purchase price of the overpriced item. Inconveniently, Cumbrae's place/face all their items on the shelves/racks with the price tags on the back of the product. I would conservatively estimate that my annual family spend at Cumbrae's to be approx. of $5,000. After such shabby treatment at Cumbrae's today I will take my business elsewhere. Due to the distance from my house, I am not a regular Cumbrae's shopper. But I love their meats, so it is worth the drive. So there was no hesitation on my part when I bought four hamburger patties. My mistake. I know it said flavored with salt and pepper but they tasted more like salt licks than like hamburger. Four of us started to eat the burgers and all four of us threw them in the garbage after a couple of bites. And drank lots and lots of water afterwards. Cumbrae's is an upscale butchers with an impressive list of clients including The Black Hoof, Canoe, and about 15-20 other notable restaurants around the city. It's clean, well organized and has an impressive selection of meats. There food is pricey, but if you're looking for something special, it's worth the extra money. We were on the hunt for veal shanks, you'd think it would be something every good butcher would have but apparently not. This was probably the 7th place we called, and the first to have any on hand. They had no problem letting us put the shanks on hold to pick up later that day. When we arrived we were impressed with how friendly and helpful the staff were. They sell an array of marinated meats, ready to heat meals, and of course a good selection of meats, broths, etc. They also have a little counter at the back with nice salads, wraps, etc. that are ready to eat. Their Chicken Burrito is $7.99 and the Steak and Stilton Wrap is $9.99. If you're cooking a special meal, I highly recommend using Cumbrae's as your butcher. read more

I don't live in the neighbourhood, but I'm always happy to treat myself to a visit to Cumbrae's when I'm in the area. Sure, the prices are on the high side, but you get what you pay for and Cumbrae's is always consistently great quality. One thing put me off my last visit, though. One of the staff. An older woman with a limp. She checked me out. She rang up the seven or eight items I bought and I remarked (to no one in particular) "Oh, that's a bit higher than I thought it would be." To which she replied "Well, I don't set the prices!" I didn't mind her snapping at me so much as how I saw her treating other staff members while I was waiting in line. One young woman seemed new and might have been a bit inexperienced (but aren't we all when starting a new job?). The older woman was terrible, barking at the young woman and berating her. That's not going to help any junior staff member to learn. Her behaviour did nothing but create a toxic environment and that doesn't make for a great impression on the customer. I was making Julia Child's Beef Bourguignon for Christmas Dinner...call me crazy but it was divine and I do believe that Cumbrae's helped to ensure that was the case. Their meat cannot be compared and they are so organized. It was scary when I arrived to a line up at 930am when they opened. But they were quick and had my order ready for me and ready to go. However, if I had NOT made this before I would have been in big trouble because they gave me the wrong kind of bacon and its really such a key ingredient in this recipe. I went to them specifically knowing that they are the best. I asked for the top of the line meat for this recipe cut into 2 inch cubes along with a chunk of top bacon cut into 1/4inch by 1 1/2 inch lardons. This task of cutting and cubing would save me a great deal of time. Well they gave me strips of bacon cut into 1/4 inch pieces. And they gave me meat cut into 4" squares....Thankfully their policy is to show you what you ordered before you finish the purchase. Had I not know what lardons were I would have taken the mush of bacon they had put in a vacuum sealed bag. thankfully they quickly fixed the order and all was good and Beef was the best I have ever made. So just remember they may have good meat but know what you ordered dont expect them to always be brilliant..... read more

I am a regular at this Cumbrae's and buy almost all my meat here. Their ground beef and assortment of sausages are fantastic (I can never again buy grocery store ground beef or sausages after experiencing butcher quality.) I also like their pork tenderloin, filet mignon, chicken thighs, whole chickens, lamb, chicken burgers...nothing has really let me down. The freshly made salads are tasty and my favourite indulgence is the buttermilk fried chicken! Skip the chicken burrito, as it is mostly rice and grizzled chicken. Their refrigerated stuff is awesome. The prepared tzatziki is surprisingly good and hits the spot when I can't make it to Greektown. The frozen pierogies and dumplings are fantastic and authentic, but pricey. Actually everything is pricey here, haha. It's easy to pay $100 per order. I love the chicken noodle soup made with their free range chicken...yummm. One piece of advice is when you place an order, check it carefully when they give it to you. I have asked them to cut up beef into 1 inch cubes to make beef stew and when I got home, the pieces were more like 4 inches. Like c'mon, which normal person can fit that into their mouth?? Common sense, people. Or I ask for one POUND of chicken thighs and then they wrap up ONE chicken thigh. Also, I think they need to make it better known that the store is still open 30 minutes before closing, even though they have put all the meat away. They are happy to accommodate you even though they are cleaning up. It's just not the best time to go there for the first time since you won't be able to see anything and you will be expected to know exactly what you want. Just like you and me, they want to go home to their families shortly after closing. If you are nice to them, they will do anything for you. Cumbrae's name is brought consistently among the food luvers for providing the best quality meat in the city. Very nice setup with and I might even go as far as saying its a carnivore's paradise. Beautifully marbled steaks (marinated and otherwise), poultry, pates, cured meats, burgers, some ready to go items and even Kobe burger (I am assuming its Kobe style) .You pay a pretty penny but you are getting good stuff here. I came here for my foie gras fix as they are one of the few places where one can buy it in raw form in Toronto. Having said that I can't justify the prices they charge here. I can get an excellent steak at Costco for almost 1/3 of the cost. Sure its mass produced but it is AAA for crying out loud. I am all for ethnically raised meat but cost benefit analysis price this spot out for me. They do have some well priced items like dry Miami style Beef Ribs which I use to make Kalbi. I highly recommend those and they are priced very well and the quality is top notch. I might try out some of their marinated stuff in the future and will update the review. 3.5 Stars. read more

Today , braving -20C and strong winds I went shopping . Bought about a dozen prepared items which I have not eaten yet. But I did eat the $12.99 chicken burrito (formerly $10.99 at the old location.) It Was full of BONES, GRIZZLE, FAT, UNIDENTIFIABLE CHICKEN PARTS. I had to frequently SPIT out junk and finally just threw the balance INTO the trash. Heads up Mr Cumbrae. This is my local butcher, and I really love this place for several reasons. The staff are friendly, and the selection of meats, soups, ready foods are really great! They can customize the cut, the marinade etc. If they don't have what you're looking for, they will order it for you no problem. I usually go for the marinated boneless-skinless chicken breasts (their marinades are awesome, I have tried the Piri Piri and the Asian one) The prices for free-range chicken are comparable to Loblaws BUT I would much rather buy and support my local butcher any day. You get one on one attention every time. They also have great ready for the BBQ skewers now and the last time I was in they had Miami Short Ribs that looked amazing! read more

I've been a loyal customer for years but since they have moved into the new location, I've found service has deteriorated. Servers are slow (and I mean SLOW) and just not trained in customer service. Today for the first time, quality of the meat became my concern. The chicken I purchased was very woody in texture, likely due to the massive size of the chickens they procure (which doesn't seem right in my opinion to have chickens this size). Super disappointed with the new Cumbrae's on Bayview. Aside from growing pains, super slow service and employees that do not know what they are serving. I was overcharged because the cashier added someone else's grocery's to my bill. I didn't realised until I left the store and started add the bill in my head (they did not provide an itemised bill). When I went back to tell them,they did not apologise for making the error. Everyone makes mistakes but the lack of customer service makes this review a 1 star. They also charge $15 for a 6 pack of San Pellegrino when you can go to Loblaws and get the same pack for $5. read more

This is such a wonderful store. So clean and bright, and well organized display fridges, and terrifically friendly/helpful staff. It really stands out on Bayview. And I haven't even talked about the food yet! This is far more than just a butcher shop. The ready-made meals are incredible, as are the soups and sauces. The deli meats are by far the best I've ever tried in the city. The aged steaks and fresh cuts are fantastic. Cumbrae's goes to great lengths to source quality local meat, often organic, always outstanding. The staff are always cheerful and helpful. And the decor is super cool. The prices are a tad higher than other shops in the neighbourhood, but they are not wildly expensive. Compared to Olliffe or Rowe Farms, I'd say the prices are fair. The only thing that isn't great is the parking on Bayview is impossible, so if you can, make sure to walk!!! read more

I like the products. Once in two weeks I run from our home to this store (Bayview) and buy multiple items. I ask for vacuum pack for a few of them, which is one of good services the store provides. By the time I get there I do not look like their typical upscale customers. Two of the girls are condocending. I am all polite using please and thanking for their help. But they give me attitude. The guys and one of the girls are all good. The management should ask staff to treat customers with respect regardless of the way they look and their accent. The meat is very good and the selection is excellent, but I really don't like how whenever I ask for a certain quantity (e.g a pound of ground beef) they always, and I mean always, try to give me more and thus charge me for more. I don't mind a bit over (e.g.1.1 lbs.) but if I want a pound and a quarter, I'll ask for it. Today I asked for between a pound and a pound and a quarter of chicken breasts. They guy picked out two that weighed 1.34 lbs. When I asked him if he could replace one with a smaller one--I could plainly see there were smaller ones--he said "Well I picked two pieces," completely missing the point. deliberately or not. Anyway, he did as I asked the combined weight was 1.11 lbs.--not so hard if you're not in the practice of giving customers more than they asked for. read more

Cumbrae's I finally made it out to the Bayview location of Cumbrae's. I rode out there on my lunch to have a peek at what makes the place so special. I had an interesting experience there and I think it would be best if I were to frame my opinion by giving a little of what I understood to be the background of the place. My wife has been talking about Cumbrae's for more than two years now. Apparently it is the place of places to go for meat, either to purchase it or to learn how to cut. The story goes that some of the fancier restaurants in Toronto have sent their chefs there to learn how to really cut meat. I had also been lead to understand (though I believe I may have misunderstood, or mislistened, or just plain not paid attention) that Cumbrae's serves a variety of meats from all sorts of suppliers almost entirely made up of local farmers who supply grass fed organic, grass fed, grain fed traditional raised and free range meats. Well now it is time for me to get to my first impressions of the place. First, when I pulled up on my bicycle I noticed to my dismay that there were no places for me to chain it up. This of course, is not Cumbrae's fault, it's an urban planning issue. I found a parking sign a ways down, chained my bike up and walked back up to Cumbrae's. Upon entering the place you immediately get the sense that some money has been spent on presentation. The place is nicely decked out; I could just have easily imagined myself inside a newly renovated kitchen on the Bridlepath. The refrigerated display equipment is new and fancy and very not cheap. Everything is clean. I have worked in meat shops for 24 years and I know a clean one when I see it. Cumbrae's is better than clean. The place is spotless. The meat is adequately cut. It was not cut by an expert, but it was cut proficiently enough. There were no wedge cuts of steaks or chops in the counter, but the presentation is off just enough to know someone young, or someone who fancies themselves to be a chef cut the meat and not an old time Dominion butcher. It took me some time, but I remembered to notice the smell. Grass fed beef has a smell. It is a gamey smell, a good smell to those who are initiated, but it is certainly an acquired appreciation. Grain fed beef has no smell, like it's sterile. Cumbrae's has no smell. Like I said the place is pristine. But no smell gave me a bad feeling right away. It is also very dark. It was the middle of the day, there was a lot of light, but the structure of the building is very narrow and so light from the front windows does not penetrate far. Decking the place out with dark tones seems to me ill advised. The electrical lighting inside was adequate, but not good enough for me. If dim lit steakhouse, where you can barely make out your meal and forget about discerning the face of the date you brought with you was the look they were going for here, they nailed it. I can forgive just about anything, especially something as trivial as poor colour choice, if there is good customer service. Well I didn't get that. When I walked in there were a total of three customers inside the establishment. One was finished checking out and passed me on her way to the door. Another was a young man, dashing in a starving student kind of way, who was handing in a job application to the manager. I was the third customer. There were two clerks behind the counter, three if you count the manager speaking with the job applicant. I stood for a few seconds behind the counter where the red meat was, glanced over twice at the two unengaged female clerks, discovered quickly that they felt no impetus to come over and serve me, so I walked up to them. I have a nice smile. This is what people tell me. I have a very nice smile. Even people who hate me, there are a few, admit that my smile is beguiling. I had been flashing my smile since the moment I entered the establishment, and I flashed it even harder at the young girl who was going to be serving me. The look she gave me could have frozen the ground beef I ended up purchasing. "Hello!" I said. "Hi." "I was wondering if you could help me out with some of your extra lean ground beef." "Ok." "The sign says it is $5.99 a pound, what is that in kilograms?" "ahhh...." "It must be something like 13 or something right?" "Yeah. How much do you want?" "I would like about two pounds please!" My God this girl looked like someone just ran over her mother. The other two women behind the counter looked just as enthused to be there. "Oh...is this mince grass fed organic?" "No. Nothing here is organic. It is traditionally raised, which means no-" I cut her off. She had no discernable personality which I could damage in any way so I didn't feel too bad. "No organic anything?" I asked. "No." "Oh. I thought you guys had that stuff."
