So at the request of my physician, I went to Madison St. Medical Sleep Disorders Center for a…read morereferral and to speak to the Doctor about my restless and sometimes sleep apnea ridden nights (Sleep apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. This results in poor sleep quality that makes you tired during the day. Sleep apnea is one of the leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness). Well my scheduled appointment for the study was actually a week away, but I totally got the dates mixed up and ended showing up a week ahead (last night actually). The technician at the front, who also was walking in when I did), was so pleasant and insisted that although my scheduled time was a week away, to please wait an extra hour in case someone did cancel or was a no show. She said that this one person has canceled or was a no show three times in the past and she would really like me not to waste my drive here. So of course, I waited in this pleasantly decorated reception area and counted down the hour. Low and behold (big surprise) he never showed up so they accommodated me. This was a really good thing because I was there already and the fact that she accommodated me was awesome. Now, the actual rooms you are given makes it seem as if you are in a nice 4 star hotel suite. I mean, its a nice moss green (very soothing) with your own bathroom (nicely decorated glass in green tile, shower, you know the works). The technicians came in and explained the WHOLE procedure to me, and I proceeded to go into la la land. Although of course I had wires everywhere and I was being monitored all night for different rhythms in my brain. I thought this place to be extremely professional and wow, the staff are just as nice as can be. In the morning, they wake you up (5 AM.) and let you complete your study with an hour of getting ready, so of course I showered and left. I just think that this was a really nice experience and hopefully I will get answers as to why I am having restless nights. I did appreciate also that they share parking with Leona's (next door) and for Oak Park this is a must since you will get a ticket if you park in the street. For fun, ask your nurse or healthcare professional at Elmhurst or anywhere else if they used to work at Rush, and they'll fill you in on the behind-the-scenes: VC capital all the way, decimating entire departments, centralizing in the name of "efficiency", cutting staff and paying badly (so they all leave and go work elsewhere.) I've been trying to get my name changed in my account since my divorce in January. After getting it changed everywhere else -- including the health insurance I was using! -- I was told Rush wouldn't change it until I brought in my corrected drivers license. (Even though the name they had in the system is no longer my legal name, and the insurance card they're using is corrected.) Finally, I bring that in to my appointment yesterday, the receiptionist in the office says she'll get it changed and it'll happen right away. Still hasn't happened today so I call the number that was in the notice that they couldn't process my insurance before the visit (because it's not correct because it's not in my name and new plan, which I can't change in the system because it doesn't match the name in the system.) This woman interrogates me as to whether the receptionist called medical records in front of me beause there's a "protocol" and the ID is in their system but "only that guy can change it." One guy. And because I didn't know, and told her, "I don't know what the receptionist did, it's not my job to know the protocol, can you just look into it and call me back?" she told me I "didn't want to work with her" and hung up on me. And then pretended she couldn't hear me when I called back. (I'm sure because my phone shows my number.) Add this to the monthly prescription filling madness that's overcomplicated by a "centralized" system where that person never checks the right file, and so I get denied all the time, and I have to call Rush central and wait on hold (because you can only message the office through myChart, which can take 72 hours to for them to get back to you.) You will be on hold forever and still not be any closer to an answer, but AGAIN they will tell you about a protocol they have to follow, which is different from the one they had to follow before. AND you can forget about going to Patient Relations, who yell at you and say you have to talk to your doctor when there are problems with billing charging you for two different procedures when only one procedure code was given on the referral form print-out -- which I confirmed over a year later with the Ultrasound Department head herself. (And mine wasn't the only one that was incorrectly printed.) But Billing will keep talking to you like you're an idiot who doesn't undestand how insurance works, rather than they have a paperwork "protocol" issue that the doctor can't solve. I am so glad I moved away from Oak Park, because the ambulance would have to take me there or to West Suburban, and both are routinely terrible in surprising ways. West Sub has been shut down for good reason. Rush just stays bad and keeps adding layers of hell to make sure you can never reach anyone who can fix your problem, and no one will ever be accountable for not doing their jobs. Ever. (Looking at Robin in Patient Relations for starters. Still haven't heard from that office about the medication errors, so I guess I'm in some "don't help her" file... or maybe that's a double-secret password protocol no one's told me about yet.) Also during this conversation, she displayed restraint to adequately communicate with me. Instead she used blatant aggressive behaviors which were completely unnecessary. In my opinion, if this was anyone else in this position it would surely call for a verbal warning, possibly termination. When I spoke to the office staff (manager) regarding her behaviors, she also indicated that "she just talks like that." She was completely dismissive and rude throughout our initial phone conversation. This type of behavior is non-conducive to any facility or environment. By the way, apparently she is the owner (Procare Medical Center-Oak Park) which somehow gives her right to be ignorant. I would say look somewhere else. However, trying to get a taxi out of this building is an absolute nightmare and deeply unorganized. While there is a direct phone line to request a cab, the system is entirely broken. All you get from the dispatchers is a vague acknowledgment that a car is on the way. You are left to wait and wait. Worse yet, even when you are finally assigned a specific cab number, there is zero order outside; other people will routinely jump ahead and take your designated taxi, forcing you to start the entire process over again. This chaotic, confusing setup is incredibly difficult and stressful for people who are ill, exhausted, or unfamiliar with the area. The medical staff deserves five stars, but Rush urgently needs to organize its passenger pickup system to protect its patients.
