After eating two thoroughly mediocre Indian Tacos in the past couple of days, I was excited seeing the signs advertising the Indian Taco at Custer Battlefield Trading Post Cafe as being the best in the west. As I walked in, I saw posters stating that this restaurant was recommended by Oprah herself. Very promising! Frybread with Honey ($8.99) - The frybread here is fantastic! As with most frybreads, it's a plate-sized frisbee of fried dough, although irregular in thickness and leavening. Some areas have the chew and puff like a doughnut, while other areas are almost completely hollow almost like pita bread. The frybread is crisp on outside without being overly greasy. It goes so well with the honey they provide in a squeeze bottle delivered to your table. I would eat this as-is again and again. (5/5) Indian Taco ($14.95) - Now, take the excellent frybread and use it as a base to ladle on seasoned ground beef with beans, chopped romaine lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, diced tomato, and black olives. Instead of dousing the top with salsa (might be pico since it's quite thick and not runny at all), it's thoughtfully served in a cup on the side so you can dress the salad to your liking. I actually preferred it this way as I found the salsa to be very salty. The dish also comes with a packet of sour cream on the side. I found the beef to be ground a little too well. Instead of a traditional ground beef texture, it kind of felt like frozen burrito-style extruded beef. Not the best texture, but I guess more authentic? (4/5) One of the issues we found was with the cups and silverware - both smelled kind of musty, like they weren't properly dried. I guess just don't sniff them and you'll be fine? Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the food served at Trading Post Cafe. My family and I were thinking about eating up the road, but since we were shopping in the gift area we just decided to eat here. The young man who was our waiter was very nice. He forgot a few things a couple times, but he was new and it wasn't a big problem. It's not often when I get to have fry bread or an Indian/Navajo taco but when I do, I sure do enjoy it! Just gross. Super long wait. Raw food. Owner told me it was my probelm that i ordered my burger medium and it came out raw. The meal was not remade per the owners direction and it was not removed off my bill. My family was quickly dismissed for not being native, or familiar with the culture. After driving near this place many times I decided to give it a go. Currently there is takeout and patio dining available. The owner and the people working there were authentically nice. I had an indian taco served hot and fresh. The taco was real good, sizeable and delicious. The place is pretty cool and the service was fast and friendly. This review is just for the cafe part of the Custer Battlefield Trading Post. I saw a sign for this place on the highway and then on the way to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, which is across the street. After seeing the national monument, I stopped here for a bit of breakfast. I wasn't super hungry so I just ordered the frybread with honey and a side of the buffalo patty and a hot tea. The lady who took my order was super nice. After I ordered, I went outside to wait. There's a lot of fun stuff to look at outside (including colorful tipis) and the store section has tons of stuff to look at (part souvenir shop, lots of Native American stuff). The lady brought my to go order outside for me when it was ready! You can't dine inside, but there are lots of nice tables outside in the patio area. The frybread was DELICIOUS! If you haven't had it before, you need to try it. It got a nice crisp to it. And it was huge! I wish I had come around lunchtime to try the frybread taco! Next time! read more

We stopped in on our trip through the area because we saw the sign about Indian tacos and had to stop. We were seated and served by Courtney who provided awesome service. We got the soup with fry bread and the Indian taco. The food was absolutely delicious and the fry bread was perfect. The seating area has indigenous music playing and creates a wonderful atmosphere. The trading post had an amazing selection of goods and we ended up getting some great gifts for folks back home as well as some fresh lavender for ourselves. They have an impressive area in the back of the store with books, videos, and other items about Custer's Last Stand. They have a smashed penny machine which is always something I get when I am visiting places on vacation. Overall a very enjoyable break from the afternoon drive, wonderful food and service, and definitely an experience I would recommend to anyone passing through. read more

Before I go into what's in the actual retail part of the store, YOU MUST try the fry bread! I mean... even Oprah has mentioned their fry bread! If you're thinking you want to order 2 fry bread tacos, because you normally eat 2 traditional Mexican tacos, DON'T! One will be plenty enough! I got the chili special with the fry bread. The bread comes aside from the chili, so you can still use half of it to enjoy with honey! If you like to cook, you can also snag a bag of the fry bread mix to make some at home. Now, onto the store. They have a vast selection of vintage and local native artisan turquoise and silver jewelry. They also have one of the largest Pendleton selections I've seen outside of the Pendleton website. The store features gifts and souvenirs for yourself and anyone you wish to share fruits of your travels with. This is one of the stops we made on our trek across Indian territory. Everyone at the monument area, Trading Post, and Restaurant were very nice. We were told about the Indian Fry Bread Taco being somethin to try so we made sure to eat at the restaurnat and give it a try. I'm not much of a taco person but I have to admit, it was really good and worth taking the time to sit and eat with the natives. Yes, we ate dinner with members of the local Crow Nation. Although I was the only snow flake in the restaurant, I always felt welcome. There was one person (customer) who stopped by the table to talk with me as he was leaving. I don't remember his name, but he is proud to be Crow and he wanted to tell me about some of the things we were seeing mounted on the walls. A very nice man and perhaps more southern than my relatives in south Georgia. I'm glad we stopped. read more

The gift shop is really nice and I highly recommend checking it out but this review is more focused on the restaurant side. This is a very casual family friendly atmosphere with so much indian stuff on the walls you will pull a muscle in your neck just trying to see it all. As for the food it's your basic burgers and fries and chicken strips for the kids. my wife got the buffalo burger and I simply had to try the so called "indian taco". It's basically indian style frybread topped with ground beef, cheese, lettuce and tomato and sour cream. All the things a gringo thinks of should go in a taco. Unfortunately I was not impressed with this. The frybread is nice just on it's own and putting these two together just didn't work. So if you come here stick with the Burger or the chicken strips. This place is well worth the stop to get good food at reasonable prices in a fun environment. The entire cafe was decorated in Native American art and decor from the regions tribes. Service was typical diner cafe style and was attentive. Beware it gets super crowded at 1200 on weekdays like clockwork due to many locals taking their lunch break at this cafe. I loved their Indian tacos. It was fluffy fry bead loaded with ground beef lettuce salsa sour cream and cheese. They say they have the best Indian tacos anywhere but I would have to say they are in the top three Indian tacos I have had. I highly recommend coming to this cafe! We just stopped after visiting the battlefield and the food was wonderful! My husband had the bison burger and I had the highly recommended Indian tacos! They were both really good! I loved the fry bread that was used like a taco shell. They also served it with honey so that you had a yummy dessert when you finish by putting honey on the remainder crust of the fry bread!! Said there was a charge for that. Currently this place is offering only to-go orders, however, they have a large beautiful patio where you can eat your to-go food! There are signs everywhere about masks being required to enter. They also sell masks if you need one! Customers generally seemed in compliance. Not all of the staff had on face coverings. You do need to walk in the restaurant to order or you could call the order in. The food was good as expected. We ordered breakfast - eggs and bacons were cooked very well. Inside the restaurant there is also a trading post with lots of interesting and well priced items. Definitely worth checking out. Flavorful seasoned beef, thrown atop a bed of fresh lettuce, chopped tomatoes and cheese, all on top of a large (and I mean large) frisbee of crispy, chewy fry bread. Others in my group had the Bear Paw (an inside-out Crow Indian Taco surrounded by fry bread), and the soup and fry bread -- Cowboy soup was the soup of the day. Everyone ate their dish with gusto and had their fill. These portions are not tiny! And afterwards, you can wander through the never-ending gift shop and peruse the various trinkets, from touristy magnets and t-shirts to blankets and clothes. I almost bought the stuffed bear... I live here in Chichuche (or Hardin for the non-Crow speakers) so I frequent this place every so often--First) to remind myself I love fry bread and B) I like my own cooking just fine.
