A bright spot in Matthews! I first spotted Custom Brew Pubs from the road traveling down Independence Blvd. The shopping center it is in has long since changed hands (I think there used to be a K-mart or some big box store there).... but now it's frequented by the Elevation Church on weekends. Anyways... back to Custom Brews. It's a great place for making your "man cave" with keg-erators, tap handles, glasses, and even a little tap bar to try some local brews. They've had tasting events were the rep gives you a taster and you guys can go taste to your hearts content. Often with tasting events comes a local food truck to supply the food. Looks like they do provide equipment and ingredients to get your own "home brew" started as well: bottle capers, buckets, brewing kits. Plenty of parking available, and easily accessible to 485, this place is definitely a cool place to check out, hang out, and keep up with all things man cave, beer, and just having a good time.

What an AWSOME! place for all my Kegerator and home bar needs. They will even come to a business and build their tap system. They supply the kegs as well with every kind of beer that is available in our state by the distributor. Not to mention they have beer on tap on-site so that one may try one of the great craft beers they offer before making that decision to carry a keg home. Don't have a Kegerator? They sell and rent them. They also offer a service plan for those who own a Kegerator. They have a wide selection of bottled craft beers as well. Don't forget to ask about all the wonderful craft beers from our local craft breweries. They also sell Home Brewing supplies for those who wish to try there hand at brewing their own beer. Their staff are superb and always service you with a smile. Go check them out. I guarantee you will enjoy yourself while there.

Unfortunately, they did not sell the kegerator I wanted (3-tap, built-in) so I had to buy it online.

While this is only my first brewing goods store, I seriously dig it. Can I thank the gods of the 21st Amendment to the US Constitution that ultimately led to a time in space where we can experiment with chemistry and brew our own beer? If you want to start brewing and have never done it before, you don't need to look any farther than here. They have starter kits with everything you could need for both small (1 gal) and large (5 gal) batch home brewing. There's a bucket, gallon jug, air lock, thermometer, hydrometer (both glass), bottle capper and sanitizing solutions. I'm probably missing something too. All you need to buy in addition would be the pot for boiling and some caps. Drink yourself a few beers and save the bottles for when you've made your own. Last but not least, you'll need a kit. Here they prepackage several kits for different beer styles and get it all ready for you to simply grab and go. There are 1 gal and 5 gal batch options. I've bought the Irish Red (a good first-timer beer), Hefeweizen and Oktoberfest. There are at least 5 other types that I've seen. If you're more experienced or a bit of a traditionalist, you can even build your own recipe from scratch or online guides. They have buckets of bulk dry grains and malt you can scoop to your delight. If you're in need of supplies to increase your output, cooling time, measurements, for kegging, they've got just about everything here. Including, to my surprise, things for brewing wine and even sake. The prices aren't bad, I guess. But again, I've got little to no experience and I've also heard this is the only shop in Charlotte selling this stuff so they may be able to get away with charging a premium. For now, I love this new hobby of mine and can't recommend this store more!

The Nook Homebrew & Tavern - Cozy spot in downtown Morganton

On one side, you have a pour-your-own-beer bar and on the other a home brew supply shop. During this particular visit, while we poked our heads into the shop, we were there to drink beer! We checked in at the counter and got a quick orientation to their technology. Then, we were turned loose to pour our own beer, settle in to the comfy couches, and play a few card games. The bar area is crazy comfortable. Handsome design, darkly lit, lots of communal games to be played and great seating options. The guy working that night (I think he was the owner) was crazy friendly and helpful without being overbearing. The only reason The Nook doesn't get 5-stars from me (yet) is the beer selection and the plastic cups. Call me a snob, but I just really think plastic cups ruin beer. I need glass! Of the 6 taps/choices on the evening we visited, there was only 1 beer I was really excited about. Other than those couple of minor gripes, we loved the Nook and will most certainly be back!

The bartender was super friendly and talkative, which I love. He gave us some good restaurant recommendations. You get a card from the bartender who's right near the front door. And you go to the taps yourself and swipe the cards to activate them, then pour to your heart's desire. You are then charged later when you are finished and are ready to leave. Cool idea! Fun spot.
