When I asked where I should eat, lots of people told me to go to the Yellow Store. Ok cool so I ask for directions and head out looking for this place. Drove by it a number of times until I stopped and asked an old timer on the road, "hey do you know where the Yellow Store is?" He points me back to the end of the road where I just came from... So I finally see this dingy old building that has some yellow painted walls, but the sign above says Village Mart. I go inside and ask, is this the Yellow Store? They tell me that that's what people call it but its really the Village Mart. OMG that was so funny! This is really a small town and this kind of stuff is just charming. So the Village Mart is a small convenience store that also cooks food in the back and has it in a glass case in the corner. They have all the standards like whiting, catfish and fried chicken. They also had fried okra, red beans, mean greens, yams, etc... Their corn bread is made on the grill so resembles a pancake. I guess they have no oven. Had the fried chicken, fried okra, mac n cheese and red beans with white bread. It was the bomb and classic soul food. What I like about soul food is the combination of various flavors that come together as you eat everything. So the red beans and white bread are perfect compliments to the fried foods making it a sweet symphony of flavors. So if you ever find yourself in Tuskegee, you gotta stop at the Yellow Store for a bite to eat. Get there early or all the good stuff will be gone.

Let's talk about THE YELLOW STORE. Omg this is the pinnacle of Southern Cuisine. My first…read moreexperience with The Yellow Store was my freshman year when I attended The Tuskegee University. The Yellow Store was a hidden gem to us. I had two fried pork chops, macaroni and cheese, cabbage, a ho cake (hot water cornbread) and a drink all for like eight dollars. The food was OUTSTANDING. The service was good as well. As for Covid-19 guidelines, not all the workers wore masks but the ones who I had to encounter did. There were a bit of people inside , but the ones around me socially distanced themselves as much as they were able. As for sustainability, my food was in a styrofoam container with parchment paper covering my food and protecting my ho cake. I definitely recommend this small hole in the wall to anyone that happens to pass through or want to try some good food for the soul.

They serve breakfast like various breakfast biscuits, grab and go options and cook to order breakfast. For lunch, they offer grilled burgers, hot dogs and chicken tenders cooked to order. Sides include French fries and onion rings with deli food like chicken salad is available. On every Wednesday, the chef offers a Southern cuisine menu that changes week by week. They serve the special from 11-2 or until they sell out. They provide the option to call in, stop by to prepay, or walk-in based on what's available after pre-orders. Today's soul food menu consisted of baked chicken over rice, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and cornbread for $14.99. The portions size was huge, enough to eat twice from the plate. The food was served in Styrofoam plates with dividers with individual wrapped utensils and salt & pepper packets. Condiments were available as well. Drink was not included, but since the location is inside a gas station, there was many options to choose from. The baked chicken was a chicken breast that was bigger than the size of my hand. The chicken was so moist and tender, which made it easier to chew. Gravy was poured on top of the seasoned, fluffy yellow rice and went perfect for the entire dish. The greens are full of flavor and pair so well with the semi-sweet cornbread square. The macaroni and cheese was not as moist and cheesy as I would like but I eat it and enjoyed. Overall, the place receives a 5/5 for me. I'll be back to try a grilled lunch item next! -DASC
