I'm not sure if the builder decided not to do this section or if someone from Guilford's decided, but it was the wrong decision and experts from Guilford's should have known better I called them back out to do this 14" section of gutter and they charged me $225, their minimum charge, for a job that was never completed in my opinion... so now I've paid, but I won't call them back and I won't recommend them

But still Guilford was constantly griping at me about being "the only one getting screwed". I really wish I could have told him just to get the hell off my property but I really didnt know about the possible legal ramifications of doing that. I just wanted him to finish and get off my property it was so stressful listening to him constantly complaining. So finally he was supposedly done, some of the workmanship was less than just ok, but I just wanted him gone. So I paid the amount of the original contract and that included the additional $3,000 dollars that we both agreed upon. But then Guilford being Guilford had the audacity to file a small claims court action against me in a failed attempt to get more money. Dealing with him was very stressful! Would I ever recommend Guilford? Hell No!! I would say be absolutely positive that you have a itemized contract with every detail of the work to be done and signed by both the contractor and yourself.

Edward, the Grand Rapids branch manager, did a thorough inspection of my roof and provided an in depth explanation of the process, the how and why of the materials that go under the shingles, installation, the shingles themselves, their crews, and warranty options. He did his homework before our appointment, arriving with overhead photos of my house and identifying areas of concern. It was a lot of information - some might say too much -- but it gave me confidence West Michigan Roofing would do a great job and stand by its work. They also offered a wider choice and quality of shingles than the other companies I contacted. Having a roof torn off and replaced is disruptive in the best of circumstances, but especially when you have a shared driveway as I do. My neighbors report that Dale, the supervisor and the work crew were conscientious and polite (I was at work while they were there). It turned into a two day job as the crew discovered there were three, not two, layers of shingles on the house. Yet the crew cleaned up at the end of the first work day, and when I came home at the end of the second day the only way you'd know they were there, other than the beautiful new roof, was the dumpster in the driveway. They also did a good job of protecting perennials and other plantings in my front yard. It hasn't rained (or snowed--it's June, after all!) since the roof was installed, but I can't imagine that there will be any problems with the roof. After talking to several companies and reviewing proposals, I chose Smart Roofing Systems. Smart has done many homes in my neighborhood and everyone had good things to say about them. My experience was no exception. One difference I noticed about Smart vs. other companies is that instead of having a huge dumpster placed in your driveway, they used an open trailer on wheels allowing for easy removal of the debris each day. I also liked the fact that this left no marks on the asphalt driveway like some heavy dumpster can do. The crews put in extremely long days and did an amazing clean up. When you tear down a roof, shingles, nails, etc. go everywhere. The job site remained neat and the daily and final clean up was superb. Smart was extremely easy to do business with.
