The roof on my small 1950s bungalow was showing its age and had a few leaks over the years so it needed replacement. I decided early on that I wanted to go with a local company with an established record of quality work and offered a solid warranty. This criteria eliminated a lot of roofers, and I narrowed my choices to three companies that had solid standing in the community. All the companies I contacted had good reputations and recommendations, and the bids came in about the same. But I chose West Michigan Roofing, and recommend you do too. Edward, the Grand Rapids branch manager, did a thorough inspection of my roof and provided an in depth explanation of the process, the how and why of the materials that go under the shingles, installation, the shingles themselves, their crews, and warranty options. He did his homework before our appointment, arriving with overhead photos of my house and identifying areas of concern. It was a lot of information - some might say too much -- but it gave me confidence West Michigan Roofing would do a great job and stand by its work. They also offered a wider choice and quality of shingles than the other companies I contacted. Having a roof torn off and replaced is disruptive in the best of circumstances, but especially when you have a shared driveway as I do. My neighbors report that Dale, the supervisor and the work crew were conscientious and polite (I was at work while they were there). It turned into a two day job as the crew discovered there were three, not two, layers of shingles on the house. Yet the crew cleaned up at the end of the first work day, and when I came home at the end of the second day the only way you'd know they were there, other than the beautiful new roof, was the dumpster in the driveway. They also did a good job of protecting perennials and other plantings in my front yard. It hasn't rained (or snowed--it's June, after all!) since the roof was installed, but I can't imagine that there will be any problems with the roof. And in the unlikely event there are, I know West Michigan Roofing will stand by their work. I encourage you to contact them when you need to replace your roof. You won't be sorry.

April 4th we experienced a hail storm. A couple of days later I noticed water running out from under our siding and it had not rained for more than 24 hours. We phoned Dave and he was unable to get to our office until after we closed. Due to the storm in the area he checked the roof and was at the office the next morning to tell us what he had found. We reported to our insurance company, he met the insurance adjuster, he scheduled for everything to be done and he worked around the criteria we needed worked around at our office and we not have a beautiful new roof. Paid Dave what he had us sign a contract stating how much we needed to pay him but then kept asking for money up front because he wasn't making any money by doing our house. "What?" As a matter of fact Dave said the day b4 they were supposed to be done, can you pay the rest of what owed? I need to pay my workers. And it sound like he didn't pay them at all (or at least not all of what he owed his workers) We do thank him for leaving tools all around our house that we kept finding, I guess they're ours now. When hiring someone to do your house; make sure to ask if the workers are legal to work in the United States? If not tell them to get the H### off your property. As for the warranty on the roof and siding that was put on; there won't be any warranty's if the contractor is gone.

I found Big Rapid Roofing via consulting the Timberline GAF website to see what roofers near me…read morewere GAF certified and trained. Gus from Big Rapids Roofing came out and gave a much better price than other bids I got, plus his company uses the brand shingle and holds the certification I wanted. I was delayed until into December from starting by my chimney build, but as soon as my chimney was finished Big Rapids Roofing was able to start. They had to blow snow off the roof in order to work. Their crew did an excellent job, worked from daybreak on into dark. Their clean up was pristine. Because of the winter weather, their equipment left some tracks in the yard, and they made every effort to remedy this by sending a guy with several bags of dirt and grass seed to repair the yard. I didn't press for this, they did it because they were responsible.

I can't honestly rate the company's work, other than obviously they didn't want the job. I did message a person from the company twice and she was going to get with the project manager, who never got back with us. We have since gotten the work done and no longer need their services. Would I recommend this company? I doubt very much, doesn't seem they want to work.
