A beautiful park and zoo in Göteborg, and it's free!…read more Slottsskogen was the highlight of my visit to Göteborg as well as one of my favourite experiences on my trip to Europe. I highly recommend it, and if you only have time to do a couple of things while in Göteborg, Slottsskogen should be a priority. The park is huge--perfect for a picnic or a game of Frisbee, and there is a zoo (one of the oldest in Sweden, according to the website). It's a great way to spend a day, and best of all, it's free!

There are paths for walking/running/biking, there's a giant pond with birds and little boats, there is an area with animals like ELK!, there is a playground, there is plenty of room for picnicking... and more! The location of Slottskogen is also fantastic - from one end you can easily access the botanical gardens and from the other you can head directly into town. Whenever I am in Göteborg, this place is tops on my list!

This Nature Reserve is just a few minutes from town and offers wonderful nature and forests with only few visitors (at least in summer). Parking is plenty, right by the small lake and free. There are three official trails circling around the lake. One was less than 1km, the other one a bit less than 3km and another one 5+km. Our dog and us followed the medium trail. A wonderful walk around the lake (but not right by it). Through a beautiful and quiet forest. The trail was well marked and is suited for almost everybody, it's an easy walk and pretty flat. At the lake there are several picknick spots as well as a restaurant with a big playground (and free bathrooms). It's a real charming spot so close to town. We were suprised not more visitors were around on that summer day. Definitely worth checking out.

After a quick visit to the Bohus Fästning (Fortress) our dog and us really needed a walk. And…read morethere's a nice little walk around the Fortress. You can either start south of the Fortress, just by the Bohusbron Bridge (there's a parking lot, 4 hours free) or north of the Fortress at the Ställplats - Husbil Camping and Parking lot (fees apply). The walk along the water and around the Fortress is quite short, but very nice. Sheep roam around free here, so please be respectful of their territory. Dogs are allowed though. There's a bunch of benches with nice views and some water access in case your furry friend needs a quick dip (ours did). If you are visiting the Fortress, be sure not to miss out on this little walk. The best seats gives fun people-watching! This is a buzy square so be early on a sunny day to get a good seat. Bishops Arms, Dubliner and Jerntorgets Brygghus are the three large pubs that houses here. BA being my favorite of the three. Good selection of beer at all three. At Järntorget there are also four or five fast food places - Burger King being one of them but also a few kebab joints. Järngrillen being my favorite (for kebab roll). If you want to save the money for one or two extra beers, have a meal at any of the fast fooders before getting seated for the beer and people-watching. Järntorget is also a hub for local transportation. From here you can get in any direction of the city and outskirts. The rent bikes "Hyr & Ställ" has a station a bit north of the actual square, this goes also for the nearest ATM. A short walk.

Most of the time you share the lane with bikers which are quite high in numbers, but usually there's no problem with passing them. The views here are quite amazing and the rock formations as well. Some picknick spots and sights line the way. And there are also numerous spots to go take a dip in the water (with stairs leading down). We walked much further than we planned to, it was just such an enjoyable walk. Very much worth a visit when around Varberg!
