So Ottawa no longer has a bike share program but it does have loads of beautiful bike paths. What's the solution? Cyco's. Gord and his team will fix you up. The cost to us was less than the cost of a one-day bike share pass in Vancouver-- and these are nice, comfortable, 21-speed bikes. And the come with helmets and locks and nice young man ensured they fit correctly. So we took off den the Rideau Canal, crossed the bridge over to Gatineau, QC, up the Ottawa River to the next bridge, crossed back to Ottawa and then headed up the Ottawa River till we stopped for lunch at a lovely spot called Remic's Rapids. Then we cut across country on Island Park Drive till we hit the Canal again and headed downstream to Pretoria Bridge and Cyco's on Hawthorne Ave. Extra points: my wife let me in on a Canadian secret. Gord and Bruce are the most Anglo-Canadian names there are. Yannick is the most Franco-Canadian name. They aren't necessarily the most common but the most quintessential Canadian names. read more

Needed skate rentals for out of town guests - and these guys had them. Located very close to the Pretoria Bridge, they are one the way downtown (for me) for Rink of Dreams - and also handy to the canal. It's a tiny tiny little bike shop! Definately a function over form type of place. (It's not glamorous.) From what I've read about them, they excel at their customer service - and I agree with that. The gentleman in the store they day our party of 5 invaded was wonderful. He cheerfully got us the skates we needed, he sharpened the skates we brought (reasonable prices for sharpening - and while you wait service - yay!). They also of course do bikes. Sales, repairs, maintenance. Haven't had a chance to try them for these services... yet. There's a small amount of parking in the back. Overall really happy with our experience, and we'll return. Absolutely fabulous service here! The location is pretty convenient and the rates are better than the canal. We got skates cleaned up (removed some corrosion) and sharpened for $6. Rentals are also reasonable--you take them out and you pay when you get back, so you only get charged for however long you're out. The guy took down a credit card number and a copy of an ID to make sure we'd bring the skates back, pretty simple process. We ended up paying $10 for 2hrs per skater--but you can rent them shorter, longer, and even days. Pretty flexible. The shop itself is pretty small, as others have said, but they do manage to make decent use of their space. Parking is pretty limited. The staff were super helpful. The guy helped each member of our party find skates to rent that fit properly and helped the first-time skaters quite a bit and understand how the skates should fit. After a dear friend of mine gifted me with her old bike, I knew I needed to get it tuned up for the fall. This is literally my first bike since I was about 12 years old, so I was completely clueless about all the cycling things. Lovely Yelp, and my friend Amy L recommended this spot, so I decided to check it out. Cyco's is located just off Hawthorne in between Colonel By and Main Street. They do have a small parking lot out back (attached to the Royal Oak), so if you're coming by car, turn left onto Hawthorne and right into the parking lot. This place is tiny and packed full of bikes, but the staff know where everything is, and are super organized. I was greeted by Christian, and he said his uncle owned the shop. I love me a good family businesses! He took a look at my bike and determined all was good, and that it just needed a tuneup, and that there was one small part that was jammed up and he wanted to soak in oil overnight. He mentioned it might take a few days if it was really bad. I got a call the next evening letting me know the bike was all set, and when I went in, it only took about 5 minutes to get it, and cost $30, which I thought was a fantastic price. They even carried it out to my car and put it on my bike rack for me! The service was friendly and excellent, and I will absolutely be coming back here to get my bike serviced in the future. read more

This is a review for work "done" to my personal bicycle, then paid for on Tuesday 30 April 2019. I left the bike at the shop last week and said it was okay if work took a week - there was no rush, I jut wanted it done and done properly. Cyco's quoted a final price after work done, then charges much more when I arrived to pick up and pay. Work contracted is not done or done so poorly it might as well be left undone. Owner is belligerent and swears. 1) Cycos called to state the work contracted was completed. We called back to ask for a final full price with taxes so we could pay cash. We were given a final price of $148 and change. Upon arriving at Cyco's I was told it was now $175.43, or an extra $27. 2) The work was not completed. 2A) The peddle was still broken. 2B) The rear axle gears were still caked in sand and grit. It was obvious in the sunlight. I immediately brought the bike back in and asked for the work be finished. The owner said it was done and that was rust. I said it was sand and he finally got a brush and brushed away some sand. Now he acknowledged the work was not done, and said he would finish the job. 3) Owner used profanity to me face. I did not swear at the owner or staff. I wanted to know why I was being charged differently and why the work was not done. His answer was to swear at me. Now I understand why my wife said a job at Cyco's has to be done twice: once to start and a second time to finish the work. I have also reported this to the Ottawa Better Business Bureau, because this activity has to be called to account. read more

Tiny store with a fairly limited selection in house, but the owner will bring things in from their warehouse by request. I did this when buying a cheap bike to abuse for a winter. It only took a day to get what I wanted, and this was for a very specific request (roller brakes). Very good service over all, reasonable prices for labour (parts comparable to elsewhere in town), plus it's great to have something on the east side of the canal when you're in a bind. read more

Great location and awesome view but these skates are worn out and we could only skate for half an hour before they began pinching our feet and gave up. Made it to the beginning and back at least. Still charged full price even after asked if we had fun. Blamed our socks! Lol read more

Fantastic little shop. I've been a few times and have had friendly, knowledgeable service no matter who I spoke to -- just all around great customer service. When I've needed parts (bearings, axles, etc), they had them in stock and at good prices. When I've taken my bike in for service, it's timely, fairly priced, and comes back in even better than expected condition. Have used Cycos twice. First time to get brakes repaired. They weren't fixed and became worse. Came back a second time. Waited three weeks for the repairs. Was told bike was ready and went to pick it up on the way to work. Owner brought bike out and made extra repairs as bike wasn't ready. Needed to go to work and the owner became annoyed that I wouldn't wait for him to complete repairs as I was late for work. Came back next day and the owner became aggressive as I hadn't waited for him the day previously. Told the delay was my fault as I had taken two days to get back to the shop about approving next steps in bike repairs. Never. Again. read more

These guys are great! Needed to replace tubes for my stroller and actually went to their competition first. After days without wheels and no progress I went to cyco's shop and not only were they organized but very helpful, friendly and efficient. I was in and out in 15 mins and stroller works good as new! I brought my bike in for repair (flat rear tire) and at first everything seemed fine. Staff was friendly and told me they would perform the repairs right away. Twenty minutes later I had the bike in the back of my car. I rode it the next day and on the first steep hill I discovered that rear brake was not attached. I somehow avoided going over the handlebars but could not get the brake cable back in place because the wheel was completely misaligned. Ok, my fault for not inspecting the brakes before riding, but pretty gross negligence to handoff a bike in this dangerous condition. I brought it back to Cyco's and explained the problem and my near-death experience. The wheel was gruffly realigned but no apology or discount was offered. I'm not going back. read more
