The cost to us was less than the cost of a one-day bike share pass in Vancouver-- and these are nice, comfortable, 21-speed bikes. And the come with helmets and locks and nice young man ensured they fit correctly. So we took off den the Rideau Canal, crossed the bridge over to Gatineau, QC, up the Ottawa River to the next bridge, crossed back to Ottawa and then headed up the Ottawa River till we stopped for lunch at a lovely spot called Remic's Rapids. Then we cut across country on Island Park Drive till we hit the Canal again and headed downstream to Pretoria Bridge and Cyco's on Hawthorne Ave. Extra points: my wife let me in on a Canadian secret. Gord and Bruce are the most Anglo-Canadian names there are. Yannick is the most Franco-Canadian name. They aren't necessarily the most common but the most quintessential Canadian names.

The guy went off at me as if I had insulted his mother and began to berate me about wrapping myself in the flag. Setting aside for a moment the shear boorish, un-Canadian rudeness of this remark, it was clear to me that the people at Fresh Air Experience find something deeply offensive about Canadians wishing to purchase products that maximize Canadian materials and labour. The tone-deafness and offensiveness of this remark by someone in retail and the way it was delivered was simply stunning. I left the store without comment. I certainly will not be spending my $4-$5K budget at this store and will be sure to communicate my Fresh Air Experience to my business associates and social circle.

We could have gone back to the store we bought it from but I didn't trust that they would fix it properly. So instead we decided to encourage a local business and took it in to Dinardo's Skis and Wheels. We were immediately impressed with the courteous and friendly reception we got, and became even more impressed as Howard, the bike technician, examined the wheel and began to explain to us what had happened. He even suggested we could save the cost of the repair by simply taking it to the box store as the bike was still under warranty. But it turns out that the box store had sold us a bike with a rear tire that was too large for the rim, and as I mentioned, I simply didn't trust that the box store would have fixed it properly and my daughter's safety is more important than saving a few dollars. He then did the repair right there as we waited, explaining each step of the process and showing us why he was doing it. After he was finished, he detailed exactly what he had done on the (very reasonable) invoice so we could use it to go back to the box store and get them to refund us the cost of the repair. They had sold us a bike that was a safety hazard and Howard was able to prove it. For top notch service, helpful and very knowledgable staff and just an all around pleasant experience I highly recommend Dinardo's Skis and Wheels. They made a repeat customer today.

Finally I politely asked someone if she could assist me and she told me, dryly, that she was in the middle of something. I found the service horrible and cold; I felt invisible.
