This old growth forest is on 40-acres of land. There were many old trees that were about 150 years…read moreold and 144 feet tall. The type of trees located there were beech trees, eastern hemlocks, red/black/white oaks, red maples, black birch, chestnut oaks, and white pines. These trees are protected from logging. There are two entrances to the trails; one at Fire Town Rd. (Only on-street parking available) and one at the Boy Scouts and Library parking lots. I parked at the library, there was a paved path to the Boy Scouts' parking lot; you can't miss the brown Belden Forest sign. The entrance to the trail was on a hill but it wasn't too steep and doable in my opinion (My toddler was able to walk it and I wore my other toddler). The trail was blazed and well marked. There weren't any greenery that could rub ticks off on your legs. The trail was peaceful even though I could hear some traffic. There were some houses along the perimeter. I'd rate this trail easy and it was about a 2-mile loop. The trail is open year round; there are no trash bins and restrooms. It is in walking distance to Downtown Simsbury. We walked to the library after. Overall, a fun little hike, right in the middle of town!

It has a series of well-marked trails in its loop and it was pretty quiet and secluded when we visited today, in fact we didn't see anyone else besides us. There is a big pond in the center, and in researching its history I learned that in the early 1900's, blocks of ice used to be carved from the Pond for people's iceboxes! There are two ways to access the trail, off of Beldenwood Road and near Boy Scout Hall behind Route 10. Actually, there are two options there, a super steep hill that looks like you'd be hiking up a ski jump, or a very flat easy path just a few yards away. The gigantic trees surrounding your walk are the real stars here. I read that some of the White Pines are 150 years old and one was measured to be 144 feet tall!!

Noel Baker donated 16 acres in 2004 and it was to be used as a trail; it's part of the Canton Land Conservation Trust. Parking was on the side of the road, on the grassy swale. There were signs at the trailhead and the trail was well marked with red markers. The trail was very easy with some small ascends and descends. There were some roots and rocks but all manageable, in my opinion; it was blazed and easy to navigate. The brook was very serene to look at and listen to. We saw another person walking their dog. Other than that, the trail was very quiet and you can see some houses along it. We did here a strange sound that went, "Whoooooop". We were baffled as to what it was, who knows, it could have been a Sasquatch lol. Overall, a lovely, short, and easy, hike!

Swibold Trail goes through the 11-acre preserve and is part of the Canton Land Conservation Trust…read more It was donated to CLCT by Dick and Gretchen Swibold in 2018. It's located off of Cherry Brook Rd. (East side) next to # 731. Per the CLCT website, it's a 0.7-mile lollipop loop trail. There was a parking lot that can fit about 3 vehicles. At the start, there was a narrow trail that descends and it was well marked with yellow rectangles. There was a wooden bridge over a small brook. My family and I took a right and went to the confluence between Cherry Brook and Small Brook; such a serene spot, hearing the water flowing, and the smell of nature. We continued onwards and saw the 18th/19th century dam remnants; a brick wall with moss, it looked historic. The trail has ascends, descends, rocks, and roots; however, it was a fairly easy hike and I think kid-friendly. There were views of Cherry Brook from above. Overall, we loved hiking this trail and it's super serene.

Swan Preserve Trails is a 90 acre parcel managed by the Canton Land Conservation Trust (CLCT); it…read morewas donated in 2000 by the Swan Family. The white blazed trail was added in 2020 in memory of Ted Cowles, who was a board member of CLCT. The parking area for this trailhead can fit about 4 vehicles. I really liked that they had a Little Free Library and it was packed to the brim. If you've read my reviews, I love the library, books, and Little Free Libraries. There were some small steps down to the trail by the kiosk; this was located besides some houses. There are two trails on this property. The Swan Trails is a 1.5-miles loop with blue, red, and yellow blazes. The red trail is easy and the other two are moderate. There was a beautiful brook, uplands, and small bridges. The second trail is called Ted Cowles which is 1-mile and white blazed. It is considered moderate and is off the yellow trail. My family and I enjoyed exploring the yellow trail on this beautiful November Saturday. The leaves can be slippery and there were a bit of roots and rocks, so watch your step. There were some small ascends. I kind of enjoy the trail in the fall because it is bare, which means no ticks! There were quite a bit of mountain Laurels too. When we were leaving, there were other hikers coming through, other than that it was quiet. It seems to be a well loved trail for sure. I look forward to checking out the other trails on this property!

Wagner Woods is another 63 acre Simsbury Land Trust gem, acquired in 2010. There was a small…read moreparking lot on Great Pond Road that could fit about 5 vehicles. When I went, it was full so I parked at George Hall's farm on Old Farms Road. This farm had a spacious gravel lot and connects directly to the Wagner Woods trails. There were multiple trails including the 0.3 mile purple Hall trail, in Wagner Woods. There are about 1.7 miles total. The trails were pretty easy and flat with occasional tree roots and rocks; there were some small boardwalks for areas that would often get wet. My family and I enjoyed the walk; it's kid-friendly, my child enjoyed it. There were wetlands, forest, vernal pool, stream, and a hayfield. The land used to be a historic farm, so there were remnants of old rock walls and foundations. I saw a sign stating that the field was used by the original owner as an aircraft landing strip. The walk was serene, with many different birds. There are approximately 60 species of birds; I've only spotted a couple, including a falcon. I've traversed the purple, blue, and red trails on this visit. The orange trail leads to Hop Brook; there's a viewing platform there. We spotted a bench too if you need a break. Overall, an enjoyable walk and I look forward to checking out the other trails next time I go.

The Wagner Woods has 1.7 miles of trail that meander through a 63 acre property…read more We parked on the Great Pond State Forest side and walked the Red Trail through the forest under a canopy of trees. We saw wetlands, a small pond, and a big hay-field with dozens of bluebird houses around the perimeter. The trail was flat and wide and very easy to navigate, just watch out for the occasional rock or two. We did get a little confused on the trail, because we saw some trails that weren't represented on our map. The map showed a Red, Yellow, Orange, Blue, and Purple Trail, but some pretty big trails weren't marked. For example, the big trail around the hay-field wasn't marked and we really couldn't tell where we were headed. We ended up doubling back to the Red Trail, where at least we had confidence that we knew where we were going. Other than a few moments of hesitation and confusion, we had a very nice time in the Wagner Woods.

Love this place! I was here the very first weekend it opened when I was 12 years old. I've seen it…read morethrough two different owners and many management teams over the years. My kids grew up skating here, and I'm sure my grandkids will too. This is a state-of-the-art facility. Anyone bashing this place either hasn't been to many other rinks or doesn't realize how good we have it. InterSkate 91 stands above the rest. The prices are fair. Running a facility like this isn't cheap. Just my home's electric bill is around $500 a month--I can't imagine what it costs to keep a rink like this running. On top of that, they have to pay employees and maintain the building, all while giving local kids a safe, fun place to spend their time. So kudos to InterSkate 91 for continuing to invest in our community and giving generations of kids a great place to skate and make memories.

Our two children are frequent summer camp and vacation camp attenders and go to at least 1 sessions every week!! This Bog trail is part of the Simsbury Land Trust. It's located on North Saddle Ridge Road in…read moreSimsbury, CT and parking can be found on street. There are two stone pillars and a sign, it can be easily missed if you drive too fast. The trail is 1 mile out and back; one of the shortest and easiest hikes I've done in a while. At first, the walk is in between two houses, continue to walk on the flat and wide esker (glacial stone), you will notice the bog on both sides, which is down the hill. At the end of the trail, on the right side, there is a steep hill going down towards the 150 ft boardwalk made of wood. We went in November, so the leaves were plentiful and slippery. There are educational signs on the boardwalk. The bog is 40 acres and is usually found in England and Canada. The bog water is acidic so there are only certain species of plants and animals that can live there; from the sphagnum moss to Gartner snakes, to name a couple, those species are highly adaptable in that environment. Other animals just passes through for food and shelter. It was a peaceful and relaxing walk, and there were views of West Mountain. I saw some dragonflies, which is a natural habitat for them. If you're looking for a short and easy hike, I recommend it!

"Under the boardwalk, down by the sea" (The Drifters)…read more Mix equal parts of a hike in the forest, a bog, and a boardwalk, and you have one very cool trail to explore. The entrance to the trail was kind of hard to find. We knew from the Simsbury Land Trail book to be on the lookout for two stone pillars on North Saddle Ridge Drive, but even though we were looking for them, we missed them. Turns out the pillars are very small and set back from the road a bit. But we did find the entrance, and soon we found ourselves walking on a beautiful forest trail, under a canopy of tall green trees. The trail was wide, pretty flat for a while, and relatively free of obstacles except for some tree roots that you have to be careful to avoid. About 1,500 feet into the trail there's a right hand turn that leads to a very steep descent. Some well placed railroad ties acted as stairs to make the downhill trek easier to manage. Soon you will pop out of the forest and see a very cool sight- a long elevated boardwalk that will take you out into a 39-acre bog. You'll be thisclose to all sorts of vegetation on both sides and you'll also see a series of informational signs describing the plants and animals all around you. At the end of the boardwalk, there are three benches where you can relax and take in the beautiful views of the trees, the bog, and a pretty view of West Mountain. You enter this trail from a typical suburban residential street, and it just blows my mind that these gorgeous trails are all over Simsbury, pretty much hiding in plain sight.
