The piece uses the ancient myth of the Sibyls--prophetesses who were often ignored--to explore how the pursuit of power leads to a tragic end when warnings go unheeded. It fused Kentridge's signature charcoal animation with powerful visuals, music, and dance. The result was inventive and powerful, and one of the best productions I've seen this year. I'd recommend checking their website to see what's on view before you go. This place is definitely worth a visit.

I had grown up listening to Mos Def and expected the wit, warmth, and effortless cool of "Ms. Fat Booty." Instead, Yasiin Bey arrived in a more poetic and experimental mode, with the intellectual intensity and Rick Owens aesthetic of an artist still pushing forward. Arriving by subway and seeing that incredible Apollo sign glowing over 125th Street immediately made the night feel important. The theater felt more like a temple than a concert hall, with its deep red interior, velvet seats, and intimate layout bringing the audience remarkably close to the stage. I remember sitting in the auditorium thinking about how many legends had performed there and how much of the music I listened to every day had passed through that building. Throughout the performance, the crowd listened with such intelligence and appreciation that the evening felt almost like attending a class inside a concert. Yasiin Bey was cerebral, theatrical, and willing to challenge expectations, while the Apollo audience completed the exchange with its focus and responsiveness. Sitting there felt sacred and deeply moving, as though I had entered a living tradition rather than simply visited a famous old theater. Years later, my fortune had changed dramatically: instead of power lunches at Casa Lever on Park Avenue, I was schlepping couches into fifth-floor walk-up apartments in Harlem. After one job, as a snowstorm began, I passed the Apollo on my walk to the subway, and its iconic sign brought back a happy memory from before my capitalist world collapsed. On the 6 train downtown, I thought again about how honored I had felt to enter a place so central to Black music, New York, and the culture that shaped my identity. Some institutions can be understood through photographs and history books, but the Apollo has to be entered, heard, and felt, and I hope to bring my children there someday.

The venue is not huge (but big enough), so even if you sit in the last row, it's a good seat. Roomy seats with lots of leg room! There is even a pullout desktop! Haha. This is, after all, in the BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College). Conveniently located a few blocks away from the 1,2,3 trains! Tonight, I went to see Classic Albums Live, a band that goes to great lengths to recreate classic rock albums in it's entirety; note for note! No costumes, no extravagant staging, no gimmicks. Just great music! Tonight, they recreated The Beatles' Abbey Road album! What a treat! Now that I know about this band and venue, I will definitely be on the lookout for future shows!

( who was famous also for being the girlfriend of William Randolph Hearst. Marion was a magnificent actress and comedian. Lara did a wonderful and entertaining lecture before showing two silent movies one of which was Marion's. Even took questions from the audience. "Beverly of Graustark " Marion has to pose as her male cousin the Prince of Graustark In 1926... This was during the peak of her fame! There was a gentleman who accompanied the film by piano. How delightful!! A wonderful venue. Comfy seats. Great staff!!! What a wonderful time!!.

I'm familiar with the area however I didn't know that it could re-invent into an impressive event space. I attended a conference there today and I was moved. The event space was large, extremely accessible to public transportation, and the break out rooms were cozy for small teams. This large well lit space can easily convert from a children's museum to a night time fundraising event quickly. The book store has something for everyone.

It was such a fun, sweet experience and the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Our puppet master teacher Michael was awesome and funny and helped us all shepherd a fun new crowd of puppets into the world - they even all sang Happy Birthday at the end. Everyone should do this, and if you're not super goofy happy at the end I'm pretty sure you're not human. Hurray for puppets!

**7/25/26** I just…read moretook the tour of his home... and it was surreal to be in the actual surroundings where this iconic star shared his rare moments of rest and privacy. It was truly amazing in such an understated way. It felt like stepping back into the 1960s--stretching over to see your neighbor for a quick hello--only to be instantly reminded of whose living room you were actually standing in. The kitchen and bathrooms were a real time-capsule blast! And the office, in particular, was extra special for me. Seeing Louie's many reel-to-reels and his demo library, where so much of his world-loved magic came to life, was incredible. My father was an opera singer during that same era, even a bit earlier, and Pop's equipment and effects were an exact replica! And God bless Lucille Wilson, Louie's last wife. Talk about being ahead of her time! Ms. Wilson singlehandedly loved this man enough to recognize the enormous impact Louie had made--and how vital it was to preserve his home, his music, and his legacy. She fought to have it recognized for its landmark and historical significance. She was a dynamo in her own right, with a deep understanding of "things to come." She was also a community activist--and an absolute "wallpaper" junkie... You'll see exactly what I mean the moment you cross the doorway into this unique, beautifully preserved bygone era. God bless Satchmo and Lucille. And most of all, God bless the hardworking individuals at the Louis Armstrong Center and the historic home who meticulously care for and preserve the world of one of America's greatest citizens and most beloved icons.

This has a very special place in my heart…read more The theatre itself is a wonderful place to both perform and hear live music across the spectrum of folk music and jazz. It's run by excellent people and one my favorite venues in the city. Swing through on a Friday and definitely check their schedule for upcoming events. The Roots and Ruckus nights are a favorite as a bluegrass musician. The connected school is well-known in the community of musicians here, and for good reason. I have many friends that teach here and I can't speak highly enough of that quality instruction you will get if you decide to take a class. Jalopy is super solid with their instructor curation and you can find everything from large group classes to one on one private instruction. They also sell stringed instruments and supplies if you're so inclined!
