French cuisine offering a comfortable, cozy and intimate experience. During our travel to London, we dined here twice. Night 1 was our mistake trying to squeeze in an entire meal prior to a show which ended up making everything rushed. Cote serves the meal based on starters and main dishes with each serving being perfectly spaced out resulting our night 1 having to leverage to go boxes to ensure we made it to the show. Night 2 we were able to actually manage our time and successfully enjoyed the entire evening with champagne, mixed drinks, appetizers and a meal. My review is closer to 3.5 stars, but rounding up as Cote is a solid chain that typically delivers on food and experience. I came here with a group of friends and the food is as expected for Cote. They have a large space downstairs, so definitely would recommend if you're looking for a spot for a large booking with good food and drinks as it's easier to get a large group reservation here. read more

I came here on a Friday early evening, maybe around 5p; the restaurant wasn't busy at all. I didn't make a reservation because considering I was a party of 1 and I wanted to go before dinnertime, I took my chances. ;) I ordered the moules frites (mussels with fries) and the portion was massive! They not only provide a discard dish but also a small dish of lemon water for you to wash your fingers from the mussels. The mussels were absolutely delicious - they were so tender, soft, and fresh. I rarely have mussels that soft; it was amazing! The broth that the mussels were cooked in was buttery and savory (but not salty!!). The fries were thin-cut, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Their olives appetizer was also delicious. It was actually a mix of olives, pickles, and other unidentifiable pickled items (hah). Overall, I would definitely recommend this spot for dinner! read more

Stopped in for dinner while in the area. Friends and I ordered off the Prix Fix menu. It had a pretty nice selection at a very reasonable price. To start, we ordered a bottle of wine, bread, and Olives. The wine and bread was perfect, but the olive plate had these black ones that tasted horrible. For my personal meal, I had ordered the Charcuterie as a starter and Bœuf en Croûte as my main. Both were amazing and very filling- helped outshine the nasty olives. As for the service, it was not so great. The restaurant was pretty quite and it still took a while to even get a glass of water. Overall, the service experience aside, the food was great and I will definitely try stop back in next time i'm in town. read more

Me and my friends were both missing Paris and French cuisine. We were definitely not disappointed! The onion soup was just as good as the one I had in Paris a few months ago, and everything else is just as good! We went for the set two-course meal (£16.95 each) plus some little extras (an onion soup to share, two sides, crème brûlée, a glass of whine) and let me tell you, the taste was well worth the price (around £60 in total)! The staff was also very friendly, and kept us our table despite being almost 30 mins late because of bad weather. Would totally recommend this to anyone who's looking for a nice meal out with a great atmosphere (Soho is one of the best neighbourhoods in London), especially if you're trying to alleviate a bit of French nostalgia. read more

Great french fare at a ridiculous price. This place is right out the back door of the Soho Hotel so I've eaten here twice during my current visit. Breakfast - Full English (2 eggs, 3 bacon rashers, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms w/ toast £7.75 w/ juice & coffee drink (called Formula £9.95). Bargain pricing but very high quality & my 2 eggs were cooked exactly as order, poached hard/not runny. My skinny flat white coffee was also perfect, hot & flavorful. I love coffee & drink a ton, so I did have a second one which was also delish. Lunch - Chicken & walnut salad. The chicken was moist & flavorful. My only complaint was the dressing was a little heavy, but I usually ask for it on the side & forgot. Free wifi - ask for the code Free filtered water - served in a cute bottle. Tried to go to Breakfast Club but saw the line there and aborted! Walked by Cote and loved that it was completely open to the street. On impulse, went in. Notes: + Amazing atmosphere. Soft jazz, windows make inside seating part of the street. Great people watching (though on a Sunday, seems more limited foot traffic) + Beautiful heavy bottle for water. Never seen this before. Will upload picture. Absolutely loved it. + Very prompt service. + Food was excellent. I mean English breakfast is the same everywhere, but there was something about every part of it that tasted fresh and vibrant. + Cloudy apple juice. Interesting. I stumbled on this place when i qas looking for french cuisine after shopping. I made the right choice eating here. They were offering a 3-course deal which i decided to try and it was amazing!! I started off with fried calamari which was quite fresh and delicious! I had the pork belly with al the veggies and scalloped potatoes. For dessert i had the flan (can remember the actual name) i was so good. Its quite easy to find if you are shopping on oxford circus. I have passed Cote a couple of times in Wardour Street and always wanted to come in - the menu (think French inexpensive brasserie) looks so inviting, and the restaurant so cosy. Finally I got my opportunity to eat here, and am pleased to say that it fully lived up to my expectations. The restaurant, which is large and on two floors- still manages to retain a feel of intimacy because it is divided up by wood panelled walls. We were seated in a booth (every restaurant should have booths), and our friendly waitress gave us plenty of help in deciding what to get. My friend decided on the reasonably priced 2 course menu for £9.95 (making it 3 courses is only £2.00 more expensive) and had a warm beetroot and goats cheese salad to start, and spatchcock for a main. I had a Roquefort salad with endive followed by a wild mushroom and spinach crepe, washed down with a couple of Kir Royals. We both raved about our dishes, so much so that we didn't even want to share! The desserts looked equally as tempting, but all we could manage was to share a dish of berries with heated white chocolate sauce poured over. The meal came to £20.00 a head, including service, which we were more than happy with. A top choice. read more

Marvelously cozy, yet simultaneously sophisticated place to dine. Maybe it's the glow of the appealing light fixtures, or the low noise level, or the very palpable French brasseriness of it, but the interior just oozes with warmth. Even though my visit here was a random walk-in affair... I would definitely put Cote on my list for a special and slightly more dressed-up occasion - pre-theatre or Easter brunch or the like. The food was immaculately presented (even the pomme frites look regal wrapped in a flourish of white gauzy paper), mouthwateringly savoury, and just-right in portion (nothing to excess... perhaps even leaving you wanting just a smidge more - which I think is how all distinguished dining should be). My friend and I started with the olives (always a must!), flatbread with cheese and thyme (this was richer and more decadent than I expected - but in a good way), and the Roquefort and endive salad (fresh and succulent, but the Roquefort dressing was runny and tasteless to the extent of being practically pointless...). For our mains, I had the cheese crepes and my friend had one of their steaks - we found them to be respectively delectable and deeply satisfying... I don't think it gets much better than melted Gruyere for a vegetarian, nor a well-aged steak for a carnivore! As an aside, one of the other reviewers mentioned a set-price menu of two to three courses... this didn't seem to be an option when we were there - everything was a la carte... and you definitely couldn't get a starter AND a main for anything close to £9.95... but still well-worth the price! read more

We came here for an early dinner before heading out for some nighttime fun. They jammed us in next to an older couple and they even talked about being cramped in the corner too. The scene here was for the theater crowd so it helps to come at off hours or make a reservation. Our food was mediocre at best. I ended up getting the steak frites that was not that that flavorful. It was a flattened out steak (never seen steak frites served this way) and not very good. By contrast, my friend got the tuna nicoise which was actually quite good, plentiful, and fresh. I'd normally give this place three stars but the cute blonde hostess told us about some different spots to hit up for dining and night life which turned out to be some good tips. read more

It's rare to wander around Soho on a cold winter night and stumble into a restaurant that is not only good, but not bad value. That's Cote. The only negative thing is that this is one of a chain of 10 restaurants, but the formula is polished and well-done. Our service was nicely handled and our server attentive and professional and very French (no coffee?) I ordered cider because I just felt like it and got a cloudy bottle of a boutique brand that didn't exactly go well with my fish pie, but I didn't care! The fish pie was filled with salmon, haddock and prawns and topped with cheesy mashed potatoes piped on in a lattice pattern. The waiter also offered up complimentary after-dinner liquor which was a nice touch to thank customers. I recommend Cote if you have 30 quid to spend on a leisurely dinner, but I'm sure you can spend less also. read more

Cote is a French bistro on Berwick Street. It is an attractive building noticeable due to the glass frontage that extends around the restaurant. It is a decent sized restaurant with quite a few tables inside. In summer they open the windows which give the place a nice inside / outside feel. I often go for brunch and it is a perfectly place for it. The service is quick and amiable. The Eggs Benedict is very well done and the coffee is decent. There is a pleasant unobtrusive ambience about the place which makes it good for conversation within small groups. Furthermore the prices are reasonable. Cote is a good place that achieves the feel it seems to be aiming for. read more

Very friendly and quick service. The chargrilled steak was very good and cut very easily. Very generous if the restaurant to give complimentary water in Coté's own earthenware bottles. The lunchtime service was busier than I've seen before and therefore the staff were clearly overstretched, but when there, they were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The food was, as my previous three visits; classic, well cooked, and simply seasoned. My Steak Frites, was tender and slightly pink (as forewarned) with well seasoned crispy chips. They are Cafe Rouge, how it should have been done. At £10 for my main it was exactly what I ordered no less no more. If only they could now replace all the Cafe Rouge's in London... We found cote on a Saturday night after waiting in line for another restaurant and it was a lucky thing we did. The french decor is very pleasing and professional looking, and the service is very prompt and polite. A fun note is that all of the water brought to the table are in stoneware bottles that say the water has been filtered through blah blah...the bottles are super cool. Just my thing. Anyway, my friends and I all had steak, ranging from medium rare (yours truly...i like them red!) to well done. All were amazing and done appropriately. The appetizers we oredered took a while to arrive, but they were quite good. THe mussels looked amazing and I'm sad that I ordered pate instead. Overall, it was a great experience. NOT the place for brunch... def not the place to get decent eggs benedict! the hot cocoa is really mediocre, and not even mixed well, the eggs benedict which you pay £8 for, come in two mildly toasted english muffins. The eggs whites were actually runny and not coagulated, but clearly one cannot find this little fact out until they CUT through the "hollandaise" which was like a spreadablly THICK mayonaise blanket covering the buns. I had the full English breakfast deal: 10 quid for sausage, bacon, tomato, mushrooms, eggs, toast, juice and coffee (Le Formule on the menu). It was excellent - I usually don't like eggs (had them scrambled) but these were fresh and exceptionally well prepared. Good quality bacon and sausage as well, and a jug of drinking water is provided free too - a nice touch. For downtown London and the quality of the breakfast, this place is a real deal. When I want to go somewhere that's consistently going to be nice and I know the menu, I'll go here. The corn-fed roast chicken is amazing (though I'm not sold on the garlic butter), and is served with a cup of thin-cut fries and salad. Very nice salads as well, and beautiful French bread. I've never tried the steak, but friends of mine say the steak frites is usually a little cold, but the rib-eye and the sirloin is very good. More impressive however is the breakfasts. Always top notch and very well priced, particularly considering that it's right in the heart of Soho. In short, it's nothing stunning, but it's always tasty and well-priced. Watch you don't get stung on the drinks though, they can very expensive very quickly. read more

We were wandering around Soho and looking for a place to eat on a Tuesday evening. Nobody in our group was feeling necessarily decisive, and we took turns suggesting and dismissing food ideas. Oh, and also, we were drunk. Someone in the group had to pee, so we stopped in a pub and had some more beer. I asked the bartender to suggest a place within stumbling distance that was good, and he pointed us towards Côte. When we arrived, I thought it would be mediocre, mass-prepared type of food. Like a TGI Friday's of French food or something. The meal was a lot better than I thought it would be. All of our dishes were delicious and well-prepared, the calamari was some of the best I've ever had, the mushroom dishes (namely the poulet grille and mushroom feuillete) were divine. For the price and in that part of town, finding a good food spot that you can get into without booking a table is a nice bonus. My boyfriend and I had a mostly lovely meal here on the last night of our vacation in the UK. We walked in without a reservation and had no problem being seated. The ambiance was low key and pleasant and the food was very tasty. We started with some bread and the chicken liver pate which was absolutely delectable. The pork belly was enjoyable with a crispy melt-in-your-mouth skin and came with a side of savory whipped chive potatoes. What I wasn't crazy about was the sauce that came with the dish - the thyme was overwhelming and I found myself pushing the sauce to the side which left the pork a little dry. My boyfriend enjoyed his steak and chips and was full enough to pass on dessert. I decided to order the creme brulee which was disappointing. It was extremely cold and the bruleed sugar on top was burnt. What's worse is that it took FOREVER to come out... we almost decided to cancel and pay the bill by the time it finally came. Service was very friendly but slow... although I have to wonder if that's just my American expectations being too high because every establishment we ate at in the UK had equally slow service without apology. I'd probably come back here for the prix fixe lunch but I don't think I'd pay the regular a la carte prices again. read more

Happened upon this place as my first two choices were booked up. I understand it's a small chain but it really did not feel that way at all. Had a perfectly lovely dinner on my own and felt very comfortable. I had a tuna nicoise...and it was a perfect size, with an interesting addition to the norm - red and yellow peppers in addition to olives, haricot verts, small potato slices and lettuce. The dressing was really nice - light but flavorful. The bread was Delicious. Had a side of frites and they were good but not great. In european style they were a little undercooked for my liking. And the portion was just right - in a goldilocks kind of way. Had a nice french chardonnay, amply poured. My only gripe is that the service was average at best. I sat for at least ten minutes before being addressed. Once i had my meal I never saw my server. In fact the hostess took my plates and brought me the bill. It seems like this restaurant is perennially busy, so I would think they'd have servers who can handle a number of tables simultaneously. Overall a good experience but far from stellar read more

So I'm in London for work this week and after a very long and intense day, had the urge to do something fun. Luckily my amazing colleagues - E and R - were in a similar mindset and off we trotted towards Soho. We stumbled across Côte quite by accident, but at a tenner for Steak Frites we thought "why not!" I had the pork belly which was absolutely beautiful, melt in the mouth & cooked to perfection. The sauce which came with the caramelises apples was almost a dichotomy to the rest of the dish, so bitter that i wasn't entirely sure I liked it but the mash was excellent and complimented that well. E and R both opted for steak, R going for the 10oz rib eye with the garlic butter sauce and E for the steak frites. Both agreed it was the best steak they had ever had. All in, for this plus my cheeky kir royale we were under £45. In the middle of Soho at 8.30pm on a Saturday night that is a pretty amazing deal. I'd definitely go again. read more

The perfectly competent and attentive service and well-prepared and presented continental-style breakfasts pleases me immensely. This is about as close as you'll get to a brunch in London, and I can definitely get behind that. I love brunch. I had a pot of tea (which was just sort of meh), and my sister had a mimosa. These drinks were followed by the 'small' portions of Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine. I appreciated the option to get just one muffin and poached egg instead of the standard two, because not only was this cheaper but it also left more room for eating later. You see, as I sat eating my beautiful hollandaise (which was a little on the sweet side at first but tasted excellent once seasoned with rock salt), I was already thinking about where I might take my visiting sister for lunch. I've been to this Côte as well as the one at St. Christopher's Place a few times each. Same menus, of course, so I am going to write one review. Try to change my mind on that. You can't! By the time you read this, I have already moved on. There's nothing you can do about it! I almost always order the same thing. Steak Tartare, and a Tuna Nicoise salad. The Tartare has a little bit too much shallot for my liking, but it's decent. It's kind of got that ketchup taste going on, which is pretty impressive for London, considering there is a perpetual ketchup shortage in the city and the country as a whole. An intentional ketchup shortage, I ought to add. It's not an actual shortage. They just don't want it. The Nicoise is very good, too. Nothing fancy there. It's just good. That's all I can write about that, as my flight from London to Los Angeles is now about to take off. It's been delayed for a while. Damned snow. read more

Singlehandedly THE WORST meal EVER. This was a trifecta brunch day... Standing in the rain @ the Breakfast Club hungover and STARVING was not going to happen. Not in a line that was going to take more than 20mins to move. Princi was packed and far too chaotic, and standing sipping coffee trying to narrow our choices, someone, spied Cote. And for reasons that elude my bourbon soaked brain we followed our stomachs and the promise of food in a quiet environment. So we got our peace and quiet...as we were seated in the farthest back room away from the people watching windows and other jovial brunch diners. And sure, we got what could pass as food...if you're blind drunk and scrambling in the fridge at 3am to put together a toasty aka: croque monsieur - but it was so sad and lonely (garnish? salad? help me! i need something here on this plate), and pathetic and quite honestly, unappetizing to look at (greying pool of mushroom sauce oozing out of my crepe), that we took 3 collective bites... and hustled for the cheque. Comedic really...as our waitress, when responding to her inquiry as to how our food was: "not great. In fact, pretty disappointing, tasteless and inedible", smiled, nodded and said yes. Not the response one hopes for. And so, we soon found ourselves, standing on the sidewalk, in the rain, making a mad dash back to the Breakfast Club. read more
