Great spot over the road from the Indian embassy. Food, service, and glass-and-brass styling is redolent of mittel Europa. Tableware includes an impressive amount of actual silver. If there is a rice pudding on the dessert menu, get it - I had one with rhubarb, and it was absolutely stellar. Came here after seeing the Tina Turner musical at the Aldwych Theatre next door. Ironically, the food here is native to Tina Turner's current country, Switzerland as well as Alpine France, Germany, and Austria but Switzerland is right in the center and includes both German and French speakers. The food and drinks here are quite affordable for the ambience, what they offer, and location . The Stiegl beers (we had both Goldbraü and Weisse) were also good. Later we had Black Stok cider which was also good but not on the menu online. The menu differed a bit from what is now online and included both a meat and vegetarian fondue option and we ordered the vegetarian one. We also got the Smoked Trout & Endive Salad. Still hungry, we ordered the Paris Mushroom & Thyme Tartes Flambee. Dessert which was Black Forest Gâteau which was a big hit. What was nice about our honeymoon is we often found the best places randomly without reservations. Good Grief! This place is simply the best. One of the finest meals I've ever had. They pulled off the coveted and most elusive hat trick. That's an amazing starter, main, and dessert. This is a really unusual place. It's the only "Mittel European " place I've ever been outside Mittel Europe. Elegant and classy, it's full of celebs etc. We were the humblest people in the place. Service was impeccable. We had to send back the wine which was corked and they were fine about it. My Wienerschnitzel was fabulous. My sister's calves liver just as good. It's nice to have a late night option for post-theatre dining. The Delauney has a peaceful and elegant feel - a great place go relax with friends. The Stroganoff was excellent. It's not made in the style often found in the US (lots of brown gravy and sour cream) but with a central European flavor - think redder and spicier. The Afternoon Tea was (19.95) and you can order one to share between two people. We opted to gave an afternoon tea and a cream tea (9.95) to have extra cakes and an extra pot of tea to share between two people. Reservations are highly recommended. The staff were very patient and explained to us all the options. They even took more of our anniversary and provided a marzipan/chocolate decoration wishing us a happy anniversary. The cakes and snacks were delicious and tea was excellent especially on a gloomy London day. The atmosphere was fancy but the tea was relatively affordable compared to other options in London. The food and vibe here was on point! Loved the cozy brasserie feel and all the flavors were incredible. The service is what is holding up a pure 5 star experience. They seem to have forgotten us many many times. From getting wine orders or bringing us bread or checking in on our cocktails, it was a bit of a mess. We had to stay on top of the servers ourselves the whole night. Not fun. But the food was tastyAF! Even the freaking bread, holy moly, that was a damn good baguette with butter! Loved the pierogis, only wish portion size was a bit larger. Mussels were very good. And nice beef tartare. Would definitely come back again! A dramatic restaurant with plenty of atmosphere at the Aldwych London, in the highly competitive dining area of Theatreland, perfect for eating out with friends. In my opinion however, the food is distinctly average and rather overpriced.  I ordered the goujons of plaice, a simple dish yet sadly served with cold fries. Two of my friends ordered the same meal and all the fries were cold. After some time, the manager did appear at our table, and apologised, stating that it was "not good enough" and duly offered compensation, so I would applaud that. Around £40pp excluding the alcohol. This review is of The Counter and not the restaurant proper - a solid 4 star experience. We were invited by the staff on a Saturday morning. My guest is a frequent patron of this establishment and has sung wonders for it for the past 6 months as an excellent place to study, relax and recharge. The restaurant was half filled with both smaller and larger groups, pleasantly quiet, sparkling clean with a beautiful display its food selection. The menu was simple and easy to follow. The wait staff smile and engage guests. Food: bacon and sausage sandwich - excellent choice (I actually preferred eating this without the top bun because it felt a little thick of a slice to me, and this correction made for a great ratio of meat to bread). A hefty smoke with a strong savory element. Coming here was the highlight of my time spent in London. The dining room is beautiful dark wood that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time for a moment. My wife and I came here for High Tea and it was really good. The atmosphere was buzzy (a bit louder than we'd hoped), but the service was very good. The tea was delicious and the accompanying foods were great -- we got the Poppy Seed Gugelhupf with apricot jam and whipped cream as well the Fruit Scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream. We went for lunch here while we were recently in London. The interior is very nice with lots of wood and the display counters were filled with lots of delicious food. They seated us very promptly. They have a very nice menu with lots of soups and sandwiches and small plates. We ordered a quiche with a salad and tomato soup with rye bread and wine. The soup and bread was delicious just like your Mom would make. My husband liked his quiche and the service was excellent. We ate here twice on our stay and enjoyed it a lot. Very good but not great is how I would describe it. I started with the Delaunay cocktail and then started with the tartare. That was fantastic and I could see just getting the tartare on a return trip. It was great. For a main, I had the sea bass which was good and then dessert was Kaiserschmarren--basically torn up pancake with some berry syrup, a very traditional german dessert. The dessert was not as good as I have had in Austria so maybe that is why while I enjoyed it, it didnt stand out as much. read more

Class, class, class. That's the best description. We drank outside at the Counter and had a bottle of wine. It was time for lunch so we took two glasses in with us. On entering a server came over with a tray to take us, and our glasses, to the table. Wonderful touch. Beautifully laid table with 'classy' white, starched, linen. So crisp. Our orders arrived within a respectable time. Time for us to have a chat and view of this magnificent restaurant. Very French, Viennese décor. The food was out of this world. I had goujons of plaice, unlike any I had tasted before. They were plaice fillets in a beautiful coating with fries and a magnificent, homemade, tartare sauce. Delicious. Cheese platter to share finished off our meal with a portion of Rarebit. Rarebit that took me back to childhood. Some restaurants call cheese on toast, rarebit. This was genuine. Runny cheese with that very brown top from under the grill with a hint of Worcestershire sauce and, probably, mustard. An experience that should be enjoyed by everyone. read more

I was pretty skeptical when I walked in, because the atmosphere seemed a little bit off. It might just have been because we arrived late (around 10 PM). My opinions quickly turned around, as the food and the service were both great. The Delaunay has an extensive separate vegetarian menu, with a bunch of vegan, dairy free, and gluten free choices (pleasantly surprising for a place that seemed pretty old school). I ordered the chickpea & broccoli burger (as the waitress recommended) with fries, and it didn't disappoint. It was thick and meaty, and felt like a solid substitute for a regular burger. For dessert, we ordered a vanilla cheesecake to share, and it was top notch. This is a fantastic spot for a late night dinner -- it attracts a big crowd of people going to see shows in the neighborhood, but that shouldn't deter anyone -- it's a classic spot with delicious food, plenty of options for those with dietary restrictions, and friendly/attentive staff. read more

I have had dinner here a couple of times - always excellent - and recently did my first brunch visit. As with its sister restaurant the Wolseley the highlight of the delaunay is the atmosphere. You do feel transported to a bustling day in Vienna. It is such a great mix of high quality yet relaxed. The food and the service are both fantastic. I enjoyed the pancakes for brunch and had an excellent flat white - a 7 out of 10 on the coffee front. This really is a restaurant for every meal. Ever walked in to a restaurant and felt totally under dressed? Well, I'm not I'll ever feel properly dressed for The Delaunay! Situated close to Temple station, the grand entrance of The Delaunay will make anyone feel like a superstar. Our bags were swiftly taken by someone in exchange for a small numbered token, and we were taken to our table. We had reserved as we were a table of six, but there were plenty of other large tables around, so they were very accommodating. Service is done in a very traditional manner, with an individual of the team taking each section of the order and then delivering it. Our drinks order was taken quickly, then presented a little while later - a slight delay, but probably due to the cappuccinos taking longer to make, and their desire to ensure everything arrives at the same time. I had a pot of breakfast tea, served with a small tea strainer; the novelty of having 'proper tea' was initially slightly lost on me, though I enjoyed the theatrical nature of having a little implement to strain the tea leaves. The menu is larger than expected, though we were focused purely on the breakfast/brunch section. They appear to be known for their eggs benedict, which many of our party went for, but I opted for the pancakes with blueberries and creme fraiche. They were served in a perfect stack, with a layer of blueberry compote between each individual pancake; pancakes come in many forms, and these were some of the best I have had. The aforementioned layer of compote meant I didn't have to experience that slightly dry final few mouthfuls of many previous meals elsewhere, and there was enough creme fraiche to last for the whole stack. I was also presented with my own little jug of maple syrup. As a final flourish, my ever adorable parents (yes, that's you mum!) had mentioned my upcoming birthday, so I was delivered a little plate of lovely morsels upon the bill arriving. Strawberry and lemon homemade marshmallows were zingy and fluffy, and turkish delight - mum's favourite! - went down with a smile. This takes you back to a warm traditional interior. The food is good and the fresh juice of the day was excellent. Ordered the Arnold omelet. It was unique bc never had it before, but it was a bit mushy and wet in the inside for me. I poured a lot of tabasco bc there wasn't much of a flavor and taste to it. But it was still lovely! The Delaunay reminds me a lot of The Wolseley. I still like the food and decor better at the latter, but this place isn't bad. We were here for breakfast. While it's famous for its classic English breakfast, The Delaunay also has a wide variety of continental breakfast items (French pastries, Vienna style coffee, etc). Our waiter was very attentive and polite. No complaints about the service. The location is great. A few minutes walk from the Temple station, near LSE and Covent Garden, perfect for having a large fancy breakfast and then walk it off in Covent Garden shops nearby. read more
