Her studio is like a small gem in thag area. She has the energy that makes you want to never leave the class. She is so positive, peaceful and energizing and as a student that is the processing of healing which I really needed. My mother and I are going to be regular now. And i cannot wait for our session!!!!

As it is advertised entirely by word-of-mouth, it remains one of Jackson Heights' best kept secrets! With true yoga sensibility, she is quiet about her work. When you take this class, your body and mind are better prepared for the week to come. This class happens next door to "Mimi for Me Yoga", but is not a part of it. So, when you get to the top of the stairs, TURN RIGHT (not left). The cost is $15 for the 2-hour class, and Sandhya can be contacted at: sandhya.kaurwar@gmail.com. she likes to know how many people to expect. Beyond this mat yoga, Sandhya also teaches "chair yoga" for senior citizens, at many local retirement facilities, and travels throughout the area. But, this is her ONLY class in Jackson Heights. I recommend you check it out!

This should be a 2.5 star review but Yelp doesn't allow fractions. Let's get the cons out of the way: - During peak hours this place gets packed. Expect to be very flexible about what you work on. Benches booked? Look for something else. Popular weights (looking at you 25 lb dumbbells) will disappear for long stretches. You'll also do better if you don't mind being social and asking folks to work in with them. - Machines fall into disrepair here and are then left in unusable shape for sometime. They aren't labeled as broken either so you may find yourself climbing on a treadmill that looks like it works (the lights are on) before realizing you've been played with (it beeps when you press the keys but just won't start). - Folks are friendly here but terrible about picking up after themselves. The lady who runs this place complains sometimes but when she isn't there the staff at the front desk won't get off their ass and enforce the rules. Late in the day weights will be strewn all over the floor in large, dangerous piles. Note to manager: When you aren't there, the front desk staff watch soccer games, surf the internet and generally rest. - The locker rooms and shower (that is singular, not a typo) are dirty and depressing. I wouldn't take my shoes off here. Go home and shower there. - The music is fine, fairly generic dance and Latin mixes - but it's often way too loud. If you bring your own iPod you will still hear the gym music mixed in with your tunes. Generally the result is unsatisfying. Now there are some significant pros, but you have to understand what this place is for and what pleasures it has to offer: - Cheap. I just paid $199 to renew for the year. That's a lot of your money that Equinox didn't manage to steal. Invest your savings wisely. - While I would love to see more women here (it's about 80% male), it's a great crowd. Men of all sexualities working out and chatting. Multiethnic, though mostly Latino. You'll hear many languages here (some Mandarin, some Hindi, mostly Spanish). This is a place that feels of and by the neighborhood. Some inelegant reviewer objected to Spanish being spoken around her. Not sure what to say to that except: Welcome to New York City. (Also, to that same inelegant reviewer: everyone speaks English here, they just don't always choose to). - The Dominican lady who runs this place is welcoming and funny and irreverent. Get to know her. She'll make you laugh. - Folks come here to workout, sweat and then leave. If you're looking for a place to look pretty or preen you will be unhappy. - There is no AC in the summer. Yes, I am listing this in the pro column. If you have spent all your life in North American suburbs this might not be the gym for you. You may not realize that the human body can function without AC. But those of us from other places and with other biographies can adjust easily to a place that keeps the windows open and cranks up the fans. You have a body. It sweats. This is what being alive feels like.

**TRIGGER WARNING**…read more I had PT at courage fitness for a year. It wasn't until a few months in that Klaus sexually assaulted me. In the bathroom, alone in the building he told me to pull my pants down, he said "oh look you got a banana" which he used to describe the bend under my butt. He had measured me in my underwear before, it was kept professional in the past and I didn't feel uncomfortable. I trusted him, he was my trainer for a year and he monitored how my body was changing. This time was different though. This time he asked "Can I spread your butt cheeks?" Shocked, I immediately responded "absolutely not!" Still unsure if he was kidding and I just didn't get the joke. He wasn't. I felt him suddenly jerk my butt cheeks apart as I screamed louder "NO NO NO NO NO NO NO " and felt him lick me. I turned around abruptly and he said "I'm hard do you want to see?" I said NO! and pushed my way out. I was in complete shock. I STILL stayed and finished my work out. Something that will haunt me for the rest of my life. I'll never understand why I was more concerned about making him feel rejected then I was for my self (something that he used when pleading not guilty.) He clenched his fists together and begged me not to tell my friend, who also went to him. Not "don't tell the cops" not "don't tell my fiancé who owns the place", don't tell my friend... In retrospect it's very obvious he was planning to do the same to her. It's easy to say why would you go alone in the bathroom with a man and pull your pants down... but I didn't think of it that way. Looking back the signs were all there. Inching past me and rubbing his dick against my leg, which I always thought was a result of the tight quarters of the gym. Holding my body to "help" me with my push ups. I recall him actually texting my friend "I'm going to lick your ass this week" instead of "kick" which we all laughed off as a result of auto correct. You can call me dumb, you can call me naïve or too trusting but this isn't about me this is about what HE did when he heard me screaming NO! I was yelling "no no no no no no no" like a doctor was about to give me a shot, I wasn't prepared for. The feeling and shock of wetness between my butt. The confusion and self hatred that followed. The feeling I was always going to bump into him in my neighborhood. Always trying to look ahead to make sure we weren't on the same block, in the same restaurant. Having to break my lease and move away from my friends. I drove past the gym sometimes and would feel like I was going to vomit, seeing the lights on, knowing there were still women alone with him in there and there was nothing I could do. Not even a yelp review. The DA said if I did, it could affect the trial. I went on my honeymoon shortly after, looking back on the pictures I recall how crushed I was as a person and how desperately I tried to live in the moment. My husband slapped my butt while I walked up the stairs, while we were there, and it resulted in me having a panic attack. Whaling in hysterics with my face buried in a pillow. I felt like I couldn't breathe, the unfriendly reminder of feeling touched and not seeing it, jolted me back to that place. I'm still not over it. He had the nerve to plead not guilty and every month at my new job I had to tell them I might have to use my "vacation days" bc I didn't want to say I had to testify at my own sexual assault trial. The fear of facing a jury who didn't believe me, when I have no reason to lie. There was no money, I didn't need to look bad at a new job, I didn't want to break my lease and move all my things. All I wanted was one thing and that was for him to not be alone with women, so this wouldn't happen to anyone else. The trial is over now, he finally pled guilty and I can "move on" but I know I'm not alone. If you're reading this I enCOURAGE you to go to the police and tell your story. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Evans would have said: dy-no-mite! So, if you're not ready to become a member, you'll feel a warm welcome when you attend the jaw droppingly low-cost hatha yoga classes; the Love Offerings, which include meditations and talks; the fun dances, artistic events, and workshops; and the delicious Sunday lunches (entree, juice, and dessert). If you're looking for a more immersive and spiritual experience, I can attest that becoming a member (receiving my mantra) has made a significant and transformational difference in all aspects of my life. For those of you with practical concerns: my elderly relative (83) recently joined and told me that it has helped with her insomnia, too. (This place is for young and old; children meditate and there are hatha yoga classes for kids on Sundays, too.) So whether you're looking for a positive environment where you can exercise, have some good food, and/or join a discussion about spirituality (sessions are usually in Spanish with English translation in person or via headset) or you're looking for something deeper and more sustainable, I believe this might just be the place for you. Pass it on! ; )
