After entering the main floor has a few small hands on art based activities. I highly recommend starting on the top floor and working your way down. The top floor has so much to do and we ran out of time before we could check everything out. The museum was clean and well organized. Lots of hands on activities for all age levels. Every kid will find something to enjoy. The shopping experience was one of their favorites. We spent about two hours but could have easily stayed longer.

It's impressive to see such a historic ship up close and learn about the sails and pulley system . Inside the main museum, be sure to set aside time for the theater video, which provides great context, and don't miss the upstairs exhibits--they're well worth exploring. The museum does a great job showcasing maritime history, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

The Erie Maritime Museum opened in 1998, and it is currently located inside the former generator station of the Pennsylvania Electric Company (PENELEC). The museum has exhibits for the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lake Erie as well as for the USS Michigan/Wolverine. The U.S. Brig Niagara warship is a replica of the one that Oliver Hazard Perry sailed during the Battle of Lake Erie against the British in 1813. In advance of my visit, I purchased tickets for my husband and me through the website. The cost was $85 per person to sail on the U.S. Brig Niagara and to tour the museum. (Customers may choose to tour only the museum for $10 or less, depending on age.) We had to sign online waivers. On the day of our sailing, we arrived early to tour the museum. We saw items such as maps of Lake Erie, diving helmets, swords, tools for shipbuilding, a cannon, ropes with different types of knots, etcetera. We also watched a short movie about the Battle of Lake Erie. The employees in the gift shop did not talk to us much, but other employees elsewhere in the museum helped us to find the meeting spot for the sailing. On the ship, we sailed for two hours from the bay and into the lake, and then we turned around to return to shore. The employees were training students to pull ropes to reposition the sails. The customers were allowed to help a little if we wanted, such as pulling ropes when told to do so, but we obviously were not allowed to climb up high to the sails. Employees inserted gunpowder into a cannon and shot it loudly into the lake. Tip: The temperature on the water is colder than the temperature on the land, so be sure to dress warmly enough. During my sailing, the temperature on land was in the 50s and on water was in the 40s. My husband and I felt cold in our hoodies and jackets, and so did the other customers.

They have some affiliation with Veterans who served on the vessel and many funny stories were shared along with fascinating information. This history of this submarine is incredible; the experience made better when hearing it while inside the vessel. If you have claustrophobic concerns, no need to worry. It's way bigger than we through inside. Nothing feels cramped. Everywhere you turn there is a fascinating piece of equipment with a rich history. I came out feeling even MORE proud to be Canadian! Great tour; great experience; totally worth the money and time!! (Even though my husband and I are Members). ‍ A friend of mine sent me a note that the botanical gardens have free admission in June for a anyone with Rose in their name. Whoohoo. I brought my aunt Rose and godmother for a day out. She just turned 80, what a nice way to get out. Even on a 95 degree day, the gardens were beautiful. Sun, shade and the inside garden with the butterfly release. They also had educational tables set up. I think there are a handful of volunteers that do a wonderful job. Julie checked us in and was very helpful. This is a great place to walk wonderfully curated gardens. There is beauty in every corner. I'm definitely coming back to use my membership and enjoy the beauty here. (Just maybe not on a 95 degree day again). Hahaha.

Cafe is also definitely geared more towards the kids tastes compared to other museum cafes in the area, which makes sense. Lots of chicken tenders, grilled cheese, burgers, etc. Some of the animals outside did seem kind of anxious, which made me feel a little sad for them. Lots of pacing. I've been to my fair share of natural history museums, and while this one is compact, it is very modern and packs a punch! When you enter, you're immediately greeted by a giant dinosaur and that set the tone for the whole visit, I felt like I kept seeing dinosaur bones everywhere! It took me a moment to orient myself to the museum layout, but looking back it's pretty compact and I could've easily wandered and enjoyed most of the museum in a couple hours. I especially enjoyed how interactive the earth section was, and this is silly but sit on those rock-looking cushions - they are SO comfortable! The little planetarium area was also very cool, and I would consider seeing a show in there next time! The dioramas are by far the most beautiful/engaging I've seen, and with between the fish video cave and the outdoor animal area, I felt like I also got a mini trip to the aquarium and the zoo. Overall I had an amazing time and this spot is super baby/toddler friendly! Note: If you have ASTC membership, admission is included! As a non museum member, I'd recommend street parking. It's much cheaper than the flat rate garage fare.
