We pulled into the parking lot next to the shop, near the vacant building, when a gentleman emerged through a damaged fence like he was making a surprise guest appearance. He looked directly at us, proudly displayed a syringe, pantomimed injecting himself, and continued on his merry way to what I can only assume was either his next stop... or his final one. At that point, he had effectively marked his territory, and we collectively decided that risking a pastry wasn't worth becoming part of the neighborhood scenery. We promptly backed out and left. I'm sure the bakery may make great pastries, but first impressions matter. If customers are greeted by open fences, apparent drug activity, and an environment that feels unsafe before they even park, it's hard to justify staying. Hopefully the business and property owners can work with the city to address the surrounding conditions, because no croissant is worth wondering whether you're about to witness an episode of Cops.
