Cafe latte in one hand and an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie in the other, I was prepared to face the cold winds coming in through the harbour. Not good. Unfortunately I have to be honest. I did not enjoy my latte. It was much like drinking a cup of hot milk. Maybe they only use 1 shot of espresso for medium lattes. I didn't ask.... and I also didn't finish drinking the latte. The cookie was 6/10. It was a large and very flat cookie. Not sure what the baking trick is to prevent your cookie batter from spreading out to far and neither do they. The cookie consistency was a crispy around the edge with a soft chewy center. I ate the whole thing. Maybe next time I will try their ice cream but for today I have to say there are other local coffee purveyors I will stick with while I'm here.

Lately I've been enjoying different ice cream flavours so I was looking forward to testing out some Newfoundland Ice cream! The evening we came here was slightly cold and a very windy night (typical windy NF night). When Its super cold it's not really the mood for ice cream but I have had ice cream in colder weather! The store location is just up the hill from downtown. My local friends mentioned that the specialty is the turtle cheesecake ice cream. Also mentioned was the soft serve is really good and different from your regular soft serve. So, the choice was one scoop turtle cheesecake on a waffle cone. Delicious, creamy and not too sweet. A great finish to the evening after dinner. They also have containers to take home if you just need some moo moos!

Well, I'm about to become the same thing in reverse - flying to St. John's to get my sweet fro-yo on at Menchie's. Without a fro-yo bar in Halifax, getting to pile on toppings sky-high at Menchie's was a hella treat. I don't love many desserts but a nice cup of vanilla with chunks of all my favourite chocolate bars and peanut butter sauce was just about perfect. Staff were friendly and helpful and the process of loading up was pretty easy to follow. I've heard there's sometimes a wait as they keep the number of customers controlled so that it's never too crowded inside. We walked right in though, just keep it in mind.

Great place for conversation. We ordered the Mast O Borani appetizer to start - a garlicky yogurt dish served with naan flatbread. It was cool, creamy and delicious. For our main dishes, we ordered mirza ghasemi (an eggplant and scrambled egg stew) and zereshk polo morgh, which was a slow-roasted quarter of a chicken with barberries. Both dishes were served with a generous helping of fluffy, saffron-infused rice. Everything we had was really delicious and had its own distinctive flavorings and spices. We were really impressed. So impressed, in fact, that we ordered a few more different dishes to go so that we could try more things when we got home. They prepared our to go order while we ate, and when we left, we not only had a whole bunch of leftovers from our meal, we had more fresh dishes to try - what a feast to look forward too. So I ordered the famous turkey with a pea soup $9.99. You had a choice of cranberry mayo or regular mayo. You pick up your meal from a sliding window that's hilarious (like a prison window). The sandwich came out as a heaping serving of real turkey with stuffing and mayo. The soup was really delicious also. Very thick purée of pea soup in a ham broth with a slightly sweet turnip tasting thick consistency. Overall it was amazing! There is a small area to eat in but fills up very quickly at lunch. The somewhat lack of restaurants in St John's means this place is pretty busy! Come get a Turkey Sandy, you won't be disappointed!
