Menchie's Frozen Yogurt - Yum!

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt

You know how all those townies fly up to Halifax to check out shopping that they can't find at…read morehome? Well, I'm about to become the same thing in reverse - flying to St. John's to get my sweet fro-yo on at Menchie's. Without a fro-yo bar in Halifax, getting to pile on toppings sky-high at Menchie's was a hella treat. I don't love many desserts but a nice cup of vanilla with chunks of all my favourite chocolate bars and peanut butter sauce was just about perfect. Staff were friendly and helpful and the process of loading up was pretty easy to follow. I've heard there's sometimes a wait as they keep the number of customers controlled so that it's never too crowded inside. We walked right in though, just keep it in mind.

She walked me through the process of self serve froyo and backed off so I didn't feel crowded at all. Would give 5 stars if based on cleanliness and service. Sample cups were provided, which was nice. The frozen yogurt really isn't top notch or maybe I've been spoiled with real frozen yogurt over the years. The selection is okay, just not what I was expecting for frozen yogurt (I just wanted peach- no flavor or topping). The first 5 spoonfuls or so was great, even moreish. But gradually I found that the rich yogurt taste wasn't really there. As it melted into a mostly clear liquid later on my coffee table, it was plain to see that it's not REAL frozen yogurt as the real stuff would've melted similar to an ice cream rather than see-through. Bit of a let down really. And they only have one size cup to fill, which is brilliant marketing. It's a humongous cup, and you -will- take more than you actually want. The setup of the store is quite refreshing though, I've never seen a place quite like it. Atmosphere was alright. The place looks great and lively but maybe there's a bit too much going on. Definitely geared towards the younger crowd. But the music they were playing was classical/opera. I jokingly told the cashier that she must've brought her own CD in today, and that I'd want a raise based on the audio torture alone if I were in her position. 2 stars may be harsh on the back of such excellent customer service and the store itself, but it's mostly because of the fake stuff. I'm sure it's good on a hot summer's day though. (Cups are bigger than the picture attached below)

We decided to try this place for a late lunch after landing a St. John's airport. What a great…read moredecision. The location is easy to reach, and has plenty of parking. The interior is lovely - nicely decorated with Persian themes - but not so fancy that it feels discouraging to bring the whole family. The tables are spaced well so it isn't too crowded or noisy. Great place for conversation. We ordered the Mast O Borani appetizer to start - a garlicky yogurt dish served with naan flatbread. It was cool, creamy and delicious. For our main dishes, we ordered mirza ghasemi (an eggplant and scrambled egg stew) and zereshk polo morgh, which was a slow-roasted quarter of a chicken with barberries. Both dishes were served with a generous helping of fluffy, saffron-infused rice. Everything we had was really delicious and had its own distinctive flavorings and spices. We were really impressed. So impressed, in fact, that we ordered a few more different dishes to go so that we could try more things when we got home. They prepared our to go order while we ate, and when we left, we not only had a whole bunch of leftovers from our meal, we had more fresh dishes to try - what a feast to look forward too. The lady who served us was really nice. She said the place had been there for a few years, and was run by her family, with special recipes that her family had developed. What luck they decided to settle in St. John's! I highly recommend Persepolis for a great meal and to support a wonderful family-owned business!
