I started my training at DTS in August of 1993. I had my wife and four children in tow and I was 33 years old. I had felt called clearly to full time ministry, And so I left my job as an engineer with the Air Force, and with the blessing of our home church and with my wife in agreement we headed for Texas from upstate NY. The seminary was very helpful with finding housing, providing food and other things when needed through an outreach program on the campus. Each semester that I returned to the campus I had tears in my eyes I was so thankful to be there. I often called the professor's "pastors" because that was the heart that they had. I'm not saying it was easy working a part time job teaching preschoolers in day care centers spread all over the metroplex, a janitor at Schofield Memorial Church, and Managing a subway shop and West Fort Worth, and driving an old car from Arlington to Dallas every other day and during summers. But it was a great blessing I will not forget. The Lord led me to use my life and training from DTS at a Christian prep school in Arlington 6 years, as a caregiver at a home for paraplegic and quadriplegic young men, as a youth minister in a Korean church in Irving, and an Asian church in Sugar Land near Houston, at a small church in Lake Placid New York, and another small church in Shirley MA for five years. My last 15 years of "service" were in a school for at risk teens in Euless TX, and here I felt the Lord grow me more than I both deserved and could imagine to help and be blessed by these young people looking who were just looking for a second chance in life. I am genuinely thankful for my MACP degree through DTS. I have been studying for about 3 1/2 years and am ready to graduate in the fall. During the pandemic, they did a great job at ministering to the hearts of their students and keeping us encouraged. This year, for online students, they have listened to our requests for more class connection, and every class I have taken has had zoom opportunities. This has made my final year a blessing as I have been able to interact with others and build community. Highly recommend this seminary. You're here to study. You really want to become intertwined with the church and as close to God as possible. You want to spread awareness of the Lord's unconditional love for all of his creations. This is what Seminary is for. My friend is a student here and he made it a point to drag me around probably the least impressive and inspiring campus I have ever seen. I was a little shocked at the gender-assigned parking. Apparently there is some logic behind why men and women shouldn't park their cars in the same lot. I was so confused while driving his car, where the heck I should park. If you attend this Seminary, it is highly recommended that you live off campus. My friend took a moment to share how the walls of the dormitories can seem to collapse with the ever-curious community of students who live there. Basically, you have no privacy. I guess even the most prestigious students of the seminary seem to forget that only God can judge. Perhaps the Seminary should add a class which addresses this issue. Generally the education you receive here seems no different from every other University you attend. My friend has almost completed his education, unfortunately Churches aren't really looking to hire despite the fact that he has expressed interest in working for them. My friend has involved himself in more internships than most regular people can handle. I have yet to understand why we spend so much money with so little return. If education is supposed to be an investment, you expect it to pay off no matter what your profession. I feel as though the blessing or opportunity of receiving an education at DTS shouldn't count. Appreciation for the education you have worked so hard for will not pay your bills. Not to belittle the quality of education, but the previous reviewer has pointed out that you have mellowed on your conservative ideals. With that, I would assume comes the recognition that times are changing. What is DTS doing to make sure their students are placed in a church after all the money they've spent. Especially if internships aren't working? I sincerely hope progressive changes are made soon. Especially when you consider the money these students pay you. DTS is a Seminary that offers theological and ministry-related degrees from an evangelical perspective. Within the Protestant world, this is one of the best schools in the nation - their ThM four-year graduate program is about as rigorous as they get. They used to be pretty strongly conservative but have mellowed with time, while still providing an academically excellent education. read more

Thankful to DTS for its pursuit of cultivating successive generations of Christian leaders with a solid biblical foundation.

My father worked at Dallas Theological Seminary as Assistant to the President for 40 yrs. He started working there when I was a small child. He worked for Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer and was very active in the publication of the eight volumes of "Systematic Theology". Dr. John F. Walvord was President when my father retired at age 70. My parents moved to Stockton, California to be near me and my family. I was able to enjoy them for only a short time as he went to his heavenly home at 71 years of age. I visited Texas with my sons and granddaughter in May of this year, but was in Dallas only on Memorial Day weekend. We drove past the seminary and I was shocked to see how much it had grown. The two original buildings were the only ones I remembered and although I was not able to visit them as the buildings were closed, I did walk around the beautiful grounds and take pictures. I have been fortunate to know several pastors who gained their degrees from DTS. My first experience was with Dr John Reed, who was a professor there, but was our pastor (Sherman Bible Church). John was my first experience with pastors who taught, rather than just preached. His messages were full of insights and applications to everyday living. Over the years, I have had other pastors with history with DTS and they all presented the Bible as a source of how to live each day, which means much more to me than the preachers I had who "scared the hell outta us" by preaching hell, fire, and brimstone. It is only through Jesus Christ that we gain Salvation, and not works as many "preachers" over the years have preached. We do not gain Heaven by works, only through Jesus who died for our sins. We try to live our lives as Jesus taught us to live. My good friend (executive pastor of our church, recently moved to Dallas) has just finished his work for his PhD from DTS. I've watched his life over the past 4 years and he lives his life as Jesus taught us to live, serving as an excellent example of how we should live our lives as well. Are any of them perfect?? Nope, only one perfect person in history and He gave His life for us over 2000 years ago. I know that DTS prepares their students in such a way that they teach us, not preach to us, and that is so much more effective for all of us.
