We had given up looking but after having our son we decided it was important to find the right place so he could have a spiritual upbringing in a loving church home. Honestly we both hesitated when a friend recommended Wilshire because it has "Baptist" in the name, but we did not know that the Baptist denomination is unique in that each church is self governed in terms of teachings... so really going to a Baptist church could mean something different each place you go, which we actually think is neat. Long story short we attended a few services and both felt a familiar safety in the traditional structure of the worship service (hymns, bible readings, prayers, communion on some Sundays, sermon), but also were BLOWN AWAY by the topics covered and creativity of the messages... not to mention how ballsy the pastors and resident pastors and associate pastors all were when addressing really touchy but very important topics like sexual abuse, domestic violence, discrimination and racism, sexism, and judgement of the LGBTQIA community among countless other things. I am so proud to be a part of this church and so damn happy it exists. George Mason, the current Senior Pastor, has been there for many many years and has led the church through some important changes that also gained it and him some nasty criticism, but that hasn't stopped him from doing what's right and what Jesus would have done. This is a fully inclusive church meaning the LGBTQIA community is fully loved and welcome. They also stand up for immigrants, refugees, women, the black community, and pretty much anyone else that is discriminated against. Their ministry and mission work help so many people and I couldn't be happier about how our givings are used to help others. Their childrens' ministry and Sunday school classes are amazing and everyone is constantly learning and studying and striving to grow as good people welcoming and open to all. This is not a church that preaches "the right way to live", but instead encourages open mindedness and love to appreciate how other religions and people express God in their own ways. There are tons of activities and retreats and groups and oh my gosh it's seriously endless. The services are broadcast live on YouTube at 8:30am and 11am on Sundays (go to their site to find the link or search Wilshire Baptist Church on YouTube). George also has a podcast called Good God that is worth a listen. I don't know what else I could say so GO CHECK IT OUT!

It has only been in the last year or so that this school has made a major transition. And I must say, it has been for the best! I thought I was happy with the former years here at HTCS. But the latter years have been exceptional too! There is a new principal and some new staff members. I cannot attest to all the employees a here, but I have had nothing but positive experience and interaction with most. Academically, this school is well praised and athletically too! This school has been open for 100 years and celebrated its centennial year this year! The diversity of the congregation and Priests is appealing as well. And, that was not the case one semester at a different school. I also love the fact that masks were optional for the kiddos during 2020/2021. Teachers & faculty kept their masks on & the # of people entering the school was kept to a minimum. Temperatures were taken every single day & parents were required to wear masks at an outdoor drop off location. It was really impressive to see how well the Principal & Vice Principal handled everything during COVID. It was definitely not an easy time for schools to navigate & Skillman CDC took it in stride. They utilized extra space, deep cleaned each room after school, and my daughter told me her Pre-k 4s (Varsity) teacher was always keeping their little hands sanitized. The school managed to maintain a loving environment while practicing extra caution. They followed CDC guidelines. Ruth Ann (head of school) was very practical, yet caring and aware of the children's needs, IMHO. Sad to say bye to this sweet school, but it's time for Kindergarten!
