It's important to know what your getting yourself into before you reserve a car to rent. It appears that all car rentals in Ireland require a form of collision insurance that is not included in the advertised rate online. In fact, the advertised daily rate is just for the car itself. Where the racket comes in is the "up sell" of mandatory insurance once you're off the plane and standing in a foreign country. They have you at that point because you will need transportation. I reserved thru Expedia and chose their optional insurance thinking I was good to go when I arrived like any where here in the states. On arrival, I was told that the "small suv or like rental" was not available and they tried switching me to a car. I then found out that the optional insurance was not the collision insurance required. I was already in for about $300 for a weekly rental. I was then presented with three options for insurance with various "deductibles". Which ever option you choose, they will hold the deductible amount on the same credit card that you use to rent, and all of them were expensive. I called Expedia and after about an hour delay with them talking to the company, they agreed to return the amount of their insurance. Dan Dooley's then magically produced a small auto transmission suv for me with a less expensive option then I previously was presented with. I choose the better coverage with $100 deductible and the rental still cost me $667.00 total or $554 euro. I didn't request to pre pay for a full tank of fuel, but it was included at $134 euro. I found that it only cost me about $80 euro to fill up while I was traveling. I also found it hard to gauge my usage and I returned the car with a 1/4 tank left. So all in all it was an expensive mishap. I'm not entirely blaming Dan Dooley and Fox for their business practices. Shame on me for not researching it better. However, I hope that my post here will help future travelers same some time, money, and the hassle of renting a car in Ireland. To summarize, call the rental car company directly and get a price with the insurance ahead of your trip so you know what to expect. In fact, pre pay if you can. Also, opt out of the prepaid tank of gas and fill it up before returning. ... and unless your a master at driving a stick in a right hand drive car, make sure you reserve a car with an automatic transmission.

Angela told my daughter and I she has nothing in her computer on this rental that this was obviously just a price quote not a confirmation and handed me back my paperwork . I then handed Angela my phone with the Email and attached confirmation number and in addition confirmed withdrawal from my credit card the total cost of the car rental. Again nothing but a shrug from Angela and again the statement " I don't have it in my computer for the fifth time " . I requested a car any car at this point willing to compromise on my initial request if needed and Angela said " don't have one I suggest you go to another rental " That was it she called the next customer on line smiling and rented them a car. After watching the next transactions the sale of insurance was a big ticket item and I began to wonder if handing my insurance coverage at the start was a big mistake. There were six other car rentals in the lobby after the third one I finally got a smaller car for from thrifty who advised me that that my situation with Dooley was a common occurrence. So two hours later after being up all night my daughter and I finally started our dream vacation with over three hundred dollars held by Dooley and five thousand held by thrifty to cover the possibly of damages . As the day progresses to make it even more aggravating I receive three additional email confirmations for the car they refused to rent me. I then spent to much time attempting to get my money back. Please do not make the same mistake I did and ignore the negative reviews as i did. DO NOT BEGIN YOUR VACATION WITH DOOLEY YOU WILL REGRET IT

I inspected the car and photographed some minor damage As I usually do for my own protection. When I went to return the car at Shanon at 8pm no one was there at dropoff facility. I walked the keys to the terminal . I usually like to drop the car off with a person so that they can give me a clean bill, check the fuel as full, etc. I don't like just dropping it off. I have since been told there was damage to the underside of the car near the right rear passenger door. This was totally bogus (besides who inspects the underside of the car!). I had heard this exact same scam story the night before about damage to the underside of a car - how they claim non existent non observable damage and bill you for it. I have requested photo proof from them and never received Anything. The Enterprise operation there is VERY UNETHICAL. Choose a different vendor! These guys are dishonest and trying to scam money for non-existent or pre-existing damage!!!

They…read moreare running a windscreen scam on customers who rent with credit card insurance claiming damage the size of a pin head and charging for full replacement $2200 US (which they do not ever do). Our large party rented 4 cars. Two had to pay 20 dollars a day for Hertz insurance, the remaining 2 brought letters from their credit card company stating full coverage. Both cars with credit card coverage were assessed $2k for the same microscopic marks that no driver would have seen at the time of rental. They looked like specs of dirt or a bug mark. Hertz's own damage assessment was "very light". My last correspondence to them after they denied my appeal. I have notified the car Rental Council of Ireland since Hertz is charging me the full price to replace a windshield that they are never going to replace. Your own damage assessment says "very light". It looks like a bug mark and no renter would recognize that as "damage". They would be looking for cracks or significant chips out of the windscreen. Unfortunately, as a consumer, I believe that future renters of this car will be charged for pre existing damage like I was. Please send me a dated invoice from the windscreen company that replaced it. In the meantime, I feel I must alert via social media not to rent from Hertz at Shannon Airport since 2 out of the 4 car renters in our party had the same "damage" assessment because we had insurance thru a credit card and not directly thru Hertz. An extremely poor business practice to an audience that Hertz assumes are one time customers.
