Dan Stewart is everything and more you could want from a wedding photographer. I literally cannot say enough things about how great an experience my husband and I had with him. We feel grateful to have found him and blessed that we now have such amazing pieces of art that capture our day. We found Dan Stewart Photography from some quick Google searches of Traverse City weddings. Being from Michigan but now living in Maryland it was tough trying to finding what to do or who to do it with to plan a wedding out there- but looking at his images you knew you hit the jackpot. I was a fan of his work before ever meeting him- I think one day at work I looked through every album and image on his webpage because the photos are just so stunning. It actually acted as a little commercial for Traverse City weddings for me, because after looking at his images I knew I had to get married there. We called Dan and set up a meeting to meet on a trip out to Michigan. He sat and chatted with my husband, mom and myself and was just the nicest guy with genuine interest in getting to know us and making our wedding day great. I knew I wanted to hire him from his work, but his demeanor and personality just added so much to the whole package. We actually ended up hiring Dan before we had anything else planned and our booking wth him became the official decision on our date. Not being from the area, or living in the area even, I relied on Dan's expertise to help source other vendors. I used his recommended vendors page almost exclusively as a blueprint to a beautiful wedding. He even helped to make sure our wedding timeline was feasible too (this man, I am telling you- the best). My husband and I now joke that Dan was the most-affordable, best wedding planner too on top of being our amazing photographer. We booked a vacation to Michigan for our engagement shoot before the wedding and got the absolute coolest shots of us with the leaves turning color and the sands on Lake Michigan. People out east where we live are always stunned at how picturesque a location we were able to take our photos in. The session served as a good get-to-know-you for us and Dan. My husband and I can be very jokey and over the top - so it was hard for me to not giggle and him to not make silly faces the whole time we were shooting. Dan was able to capture that energy between us and also work though the nervousness with us into more serious shots too that really showed our relationship together. I should also mention that the whole planning process with Dan was a breeze. He is extremely professional, punctual and precise. He responded to emails almost immediately and helped with every question we gave him. The actual day was practically perfect in every way including and especially because of our photos. We chose to have a first look session so we would have more time with our guests at the wedding. Those photos of us together before all the craziness are some of my favorites. The rest of the day him and his staff joked with us and made us feel incredibly comfortable- I have friends that are sad we couldn't pack up the whole crew and bring them back to Maryland with us. The actual pictures he took were so ridiculously good looking I can't stop stealing peaks of them any chance I get. Literally all of our friends and family asked for his link to order shots. I have the highest opinion of the work and his ability to capture the magic of the day. After the day the pictures came to us with lightening speed and in the coolest nicest little box with goodies. It felt like a present from a friend instead of a service we paid for. My husband and I still talk about Dan like he's a member of our family now. I don't need to tell you that Dan Stewart is a great photographer and will take gorgeous photos of your wedding - if you have seen his website, his work speaks for itself! What you can't see is that he is a consummate professional and makes it easy to get your picture taken! Those things didn't occur to me when I was searching around for a photographer. I looked at the style of their work and asked about pricing and availability for our date. It didn't occur to me at the time that I was going to spend my wedding day - ALL of my wedding day - with this person, and I had better like her or him! Dan was easy to have around at the wedding - not obtrusive, but capturing every moment (with his trusty assistant Mike of course!). I also knew that my dear husband and I weren't naturals at posing for photos, but I didn't realize that a photographer could make us LOOK like we were! You can decide for yourself whether we looked "at ease" in our images, but I think they're great! Another thing that didn't occur to me was that some photographers take MONTHS before they show you your first image. Dan is NOT this way! The highlights of our wedding were on his blog about a week after our wedding, and he worked THREE weddings on our weekend, so I think that is really impressive. Let me just tell you HOW EXCITED I was to see these pictures! I was on my honeymoon checking my blackberry for updates every 5 minutes! You will be that excited too, and you will not want to wait months to see those first images! The balance of the photos - via an online gallery which is available for 60 days - were provided about 3.5 weeks after the wedding. Dan also granted my request for a full wedding group photo with all of our guests. We had about 80 guests, so this was a lot of people, although not as many as most weddings. This photo showed up in his highlights and I already know that it will be one we cherish for years to come. Beautifully composed, it will be a wonderful record of our closest friends and family on this special day. I much prefer it to the typical photos taken of couples at the reception tables, with half-eaten food and half-full drinks. I think this might become a popular request for Dan! Beyond his ability as a photographer, Dan was a great resource for me as a "local" to my wedding locale (I am not from the area) and experienced in wedding schedules. We had two long conversations about the schedule for the day, so that I could make sure I was balancing all the needs - time for photos, time for family, time to eat, the sunset session without making Mom upset about us being gone from the reception for too long... I thought he went way beyond what a photographer would normally put up with in answering my questions and helping me put the schedule together! After I got engaged, I knew what photographer to use. Dan shot my niece's wedding and I was enamored by her wedding photos. But before I told my preference to my family, my sister and sister in-law recommended him. I told them, he was the one I wanted, so we were in agreement. My then fiancé was sold after we met him in person for the first time. He was engaging, humble, humorous, and inquisitive about how my fiancé and I met, our hobbies, faith, and desires. After that meeting, Dan felt like a friend, not just a vendor. Throughout the process, he was organized. I felt more confident witnessing how professional and experienced he was. I can't say enough about how great it was to work with Dan Stewart! When I was initially looking for a wedding photographer, I came across Dan's website and instantly connected with his photos. They were exactly what I was looking for, and I was blown away by his beautiful pictures. From the moment I first contacted him, I knew I had made the right choice because he is so easy to work with. Dan Stewart Photography did an amazing job capturing our special day! I came across Dan Stewart Photography through a vendor list provided by our initial wedding venue. We live in Ohio and wanted a Northern Michigan wedding, and after seeing their work on Instagram, we knew we wanted Dan Stewart Photography to capture our day! The pandemic threw us a couple curve balls, but Dan Stewart Photography was understanding and very flexible with our needs. Communication with Dan was smooth and easy, something a Bride appreciates while planning a wedding, especially being 4.5 hours away! Dan himself was unavailable to photograph our wedding, but he works with two amazing photographers named Anna and Luke, he provided us with some of their work and let us choose who's style fit us best. We agreed that Anna's work was more our style. Let me tell you, she is AWESOME to work with! Anna makes you feel comfortable in front of the camera, she takes suggestions, and her creative ideas make for beautiful photos! Dan did a fantastic job photographing our wedding this past May (and our engagement pictures last October as well.) I have been looking at them non-stop since then. We have received nothing but complements on our pictures. Dan and his assistant Matt made both me and my husband feel completely comfortable and that's saying a lot since my husband absolutely hates to have his picture taken. He had been dreading our engagement session the entire weekend and after the session was done, he said that he really liked Dan and having his picture taken wasn't as bad as he thought it was going to be. Having the engagement session included in the wedding package was great because we got to become more comfortable getting our picture taken with Dan behind the camera. Dan is very professional but is a lot of fun to work with and made all of our pictures look so natural. Our wedding party also commented on how much fun Dan and Matt were to work with. Dan Stewart and his team are amazing! I found Dan because we were considering getting married in Traverse City. (We live in NY but I am from Michigan.) Even though we ended up getting married in south east Michigan, I absolutely had to have him for our wedding! He took the most beautiful engagement pictures and was so genuine, a really nice guy! In the weeks leading up to our June wedding he called me a few times to go over our timeline and make sure we were on the same page. Dan also gave me a lot of advise on making sure the day went smooth, and he was right about everything. For example cutting the cake right after entrance, putting motion booth by dance floor... He also suggested we take pictures together before the ceremony. We decided not to see each other before the ceremony. But, looking back it definitely would've reduced the anxiety before the ceremony. There's several reason why he suggests this... Listen to him! It makes total sense and the pictures come out better when your hair and makeup are fresh. On the big day Dan was on top of everything! At the reception they are there capturing all of your special moments, but never bother you or ask you to pose a certain way. They were also great with the kids, very patient! The motion booth was incredible! Unlike a photo booth, it is an open space with no walls! Which gives you lots of room for all of your guests fantastic dance moves, groomsmen pyramids, and group hugs :) We had such an amazing day and Dan, Dorey and Mike were the best. We had Luke and Anna as our wedding photographers. Summary - Excellent. Here are the highlights. Engagement session: We originally didn't intend to do an engagement photo session but it is included as part of all wedding package options. We are glad that it was. This turned out to be a great time to get comfortable with Luke and Anna and get used to the awkward art of professional photography. A warning - you will love the pictures, they cost extra to have, include this cost in your budget. Wedding day-of: One groomsman called Luke 'the swiss army knife of weddings'. Aside from taking pictures he helped us get our bow ties squared away and repinned our boutonnieres. We feel Luke & Anna struck a great balance between being invisible to let us enjoy the day and taking an active role to ensure the best shots are captured. Wedding pictures: We love them. They captured the day, the people, and the atmosphere in a very professional and creative way. Miscellaneous: General communications were responsive and the platforms used for making payments and receiving pictures were slick and easy. The physical care package that included our final pictures were really a nice touch (currently writing this review while drinking coffee from a Dan Stewart Photography mug). Photography is a serious line item in the wedding budget and we are 100% satisfied with our investment in Dan Stewart Photography. While some have every detail planned for their wedding before it is even in their near future... having Dan and his team be a part of my future wedding was something I always knew. Our first contact and meet with Dan was what sold us. He was easy to talk with and made us feel comfortable that he would be able to capture our moments that would soon be a memory. Dan was efficient with ideas and confident in what to capture. There was not a moment that I felt I had to guide him or present to him with ideas. Furthermore, he had flexibility for a couple specific shots that we had wanted. This alone made our wedding day less stressful. As I read through the glowing reviews left by Dan's other customers, I find myself saying "ditto" to absolutely everything. We did an engagement session with Dan in June 2012 and he and Matt were the photographers at our wedding in August 2012. I can't say enough great things about them. So professional, so personable. Neither my husband nor I consider ourselves very photogenic, so we were a little nervous at first, but Dan made us feel so comfortable. All of our wedding guests raved about them, too! Dan and Matt came prepared, clearly knew what they were doing, and made sure everything went smoothly. To this day I'm not sure how they managed to be everywhere at once -- they captured every single memory for us. And I can't even begin to tell you how happy we were with the results. We hit the jackpot by booking Dan as our wedding photographer! There are not enough good things we could say about the experience we had. Every single photo was absolutely perfect. We had our engagement photos done first. When we first met Dan he was very personable. He was 100% professional, and made us feel comfortable in every way. He took amazing pictures of us! I cannot stress how happy we were with them. It was great to already know that we had an astonishing photographer. We were sure that our wedding photos were going to be just as beautiful. Choosing the right photographer was very important to me, like many brides. I was focused like most on the quality of photos and pricing, but in addition I was very focused on my vendor's communication styles and their personalities. I was not using an event planner, I was the event planner, and I was doing so from 6 hours away and a shorter engagement timeframe. Additionally, my husband and I don't like having our photos taken and view ourselves as the anti-photogenic pair. We REALLY needed someone to help us out and put us at ease and I found that person! When I got in touch with Dan I continued to do research, because that is my personality, but I was QUICKLY put to ease as I loved his work, his price point was very reasonable, and he was responsive and patient with me! My fiancé and I met with Dan soon after on ae trip up to TC and were sold; he understood our schedule and worked with us, he clearly laid out his style, what he expected from us, what we could expect from him and he delivered on everything, above and beyond! Dan was the best choice we ever could have made for a wedding photographer! We had a Zoom call with him before we even booked him and he genuinely seemed to care for my husband and I and wanted to get to know us. My husband and I had never had professional photos taken prior to our engagement photos. Dan made us feel comfortable and did just the right combination of candid and posed photos. Dan was so helpful throughout the wedding planning process. He created our entire wedding day schedule. He met with us multiple times to make sure everything was falling into place. Dan has such an extensive knowledge of photography and journalism. We had no doubt that the photos he took would turn out beautifully. And they did! Dan was so calm on our wedding day and encouraged everyone else to be the same. He kept us on our schedule. He had a great attitude and made the photos fun. We love the photos he took for us. We chose Dan to be our wedding photographer because we really appreciated his photojournalism background and ability to capture emotion and action, as well as his artistic incorporation of natural scenery or background in his photographs. We were not disappointed!!! He took amazing posed photos of the two of us (we allowed several hours for photos before our ceremony), making great use of the natural surroundings. He was so great at spotting good photo ops and put a lot of effort into artistically framing each shot. The composition and quality of every image was excellent. The action shots taken during the ceremony and reception were particularly memorable. They perfectly captured the feelings, emotions, and atmosphere of the event. Not only does everyone look great in all the photos, but every time we look at the photos it helps to transport us back to that day and remember how we were feeling in those moments. After securing our venue and date for our wedding soon after we were engaged in 2020, we knew the first vendor that was a must for us would be Dan Stewart Photography. Having 20 months to plan we were lucky to schedule both Dan and an additional photographer for our day and it was the best decision we could have made! I was lucky to grow up with Dan so to have his thoughts and insights on how we could plan and schedule our day made it all so special. From the beginning of the planning process, he helped us work through the details of getting ready at my childhood home and doing our first look on my beach while then still getting back to the Homestead in time to start the celebrations. Dan did an absolutely incredible job. I am going to try and convey how much we enjoyed working with him and how much we love the pictures he provided, but I don't know if I can do it justice. Dan was professional and timely throughout the entire process. Not only is he professional and pleasant, but he is also truly an artist and phenomenal at what he does. He has the ability to make you calm in all the chaos of wedding planning. We booked him for just photography originally, but he ended up providing us a videographer too! 3 days before the wedding and on our way up to Traverse City we got a call from our videographer (different company) that they were cancelling on us. We immediately texted Dan, told him what happened, and asked if he knew anyone that could be our videographer at the last minute. Within 5 minutes of me texting him Dan he called me, and in less than 2 hours after we talked he had found us a videographer and we had a contract with him signed. The day of the wedding Dan showed up with Scott (also works at Dan Stewart Photography) and they were incredible. All day we had people telling us how professional they both were and how nice they both were.
