Not having to "come up with exercises" is a plus for me. I signed up for the Elite membership which averages about 3 workout sessions a week. As a plus, initially and every 2 months you'll receive an InBody Scanner to measure your body composition (muscle/fat %) . Talk about an eye opener?! So far I've truly enjoyed the high-intensity studio experience, which combines cardio and strength equipment (treadmill, water rowers, TRX suspension trainer, weights). Orangetheory stands out from other fitness regimens with interval training, and individual monitoring via heart rate technology. It's very motivating to "view and track" my progress during and after a workout. I'm still a bit confused with the verbiage and understanding of the color codes but I get a good sweat each time so that's enough for me. This personalized approach helps me to maximize my calorie burn. Coach Preston is super motivating and the music and exercise selections have all been fresh and different each sessions. I also love the flexibility to attend different locations. I'm early on in my journey but so far it's been good.

I didn't know what to expect. But it was very self sufficient. I thought it would be more trainer…read moreinvolved. I can go to the gym on my own for what we did.

5 Stars "This place is like stepping into a fitness time…read moremachine -- in the BEST way!" I loved working out here! The New Orleans Athletic Club isn't just a gym -- it's a whole vibe. From the second you walk in, it feels like old-school charm meets modern-day motivation. The building itself is gorgeous -- think chandeliers, brick walls, and history dripping from every dumbbell. The weight room? Massive. The cardio section? Plenty of options. The pool? Stunning and feels like something Gatsby would've done laps in. And don't even get me started on the boxing ring -- I half-expected to see Rocky training in the corner. There's even a Turkish bath. Yes, a Turkish bath -- where else are you gonna find that? The people were super friendly, and there was this kind of unspoken camaraderie in the air -- everyone's working hard but also vibing with the beauty of the space. I got a killer workout and a mini history tour all in one. If you're in New Orleans and want to sweat in style -- this is the spot. 10/10 will be back (probably sore but smiling).

Re: COVID-19 operations and safety practices…read more I gotta slow clap for y'all because I am loving the new implementation of the appointments online and how serious the JCC is taking COVID-19. Members of JCC Uptown are able to book appointments up to three days in advance for one hour block sessions. Everyone has to wear a mask upon entry and get your temperature checked. Per their constant email communications all members must arrive ready to workout (lockers are only available for bathrooms so no showers or storage purposes) and bring in your own towel and water bottle. They allow no more than 7 people at a time in the cardio room and around 8/9 in the weights room. Within the cardio room every other machine is shut down to practice social distancing. You'll also find plenty of marked disinfected and used cleaning sprays so you can wipe your machine before and after. Their team also cleans the machines CONSTANTLY. Like I seriously would get off the cardio machine wipe it down, just to then see them wipe it down again themselves. I feel safe coming here and appreciate there isn't a crazy occupancy capacity happening right now. TAKE MY MONIES. *Just know you will have to sign a waiver the first time you initially go during COVID-19, because liability and lawsuits ya know...

JCC Aqua Fit program has been declining for months. Suggestions by members to increase classes,…read moreupgrade equipment and replace instructors are ignored. Since the hiring of a new CEO a couple of months ago, several aqua fit classes have been canceled so the pool can be used for swim lessons for the child care center and summer camps. This has especially impacted the seniors who joined the JCC specifically for the low impact benefits of water aerobics. Since summer camps, swim lessons and pool parties generate significant income, It seems that the financial bottom line is more important than addressing membership in the "community center." Too bad, the aqua fit program affects at least 50 members who are the active adults who use the facility daily. Do not join for the aqua program right now. Hopefully we will be heard in the future and classes will be restored.

I would likely return with a group again but it's quite pricey so a membership isn't in my current budget when I would still have to supplement this workout with others. My dislike wasn't just because of the awkwardness everyone experiences during the first class (though admittedly, I felt like I sucked at everything at first, heh). It was because I considered the prices for regular classes to be pretty steep for a class that doesn't even last an hour. Not to mention the Pure Barre branded stuff everywhere (which of course is typical of any gym franchise), the cheesy pop music and the fact that the stretching didn't seem to be enough (you can stretch on your own, obviously). I thought it was really just a glorified exercise class that you can get anywhere and didn't really see what the fuss was. And now after 10 classes, I'm hooked on the burn. They say that it takes about 3 classes to get the precision of the moves down (think tiny, intense movements) and that's about right. Now, I find myself doing these exercises just about anywhere. It's strangely addictive to clench your muscles like this. It's a fast, intense workout. Time may seem to stand still as your muscles are shaking, yet it goes by so rapidly that the class is over in the blink of an eye. You may feel that it's so fast that surely this isn't enough of a workout and what the hell did you just spend 25 bucks a class for? But it is. It's a great way to tone that body up (though you'd definitely want to supplement the workout with cardiovascular exercises to keep yourself in tip top shape). People liken it to a combination of yoga, pilates and ballet. I actually don't really see anything too much in common with yoga. Ballet, absolutely, for you're standing at a barre doing pliés which totally kill your thighs. I've never taken pilates before, so I can't remark on that. The teachers are great overall, and of course you will like some more than others. I tend to prefer the teachers that give you some kind of countdown and verbal encouragement throughout. Once the teacher becomes silent, people are more apt to rest, which you don't want to do b/c working the muscles to fatigue is kind of the point (and many will tell you this). Other good stuff: the studio is spotless, fans are plentiful, and the staff is nice. FYI, the price goes down if you buy 5, 10, and 20 sessions at a time. I just bought my next 10 classes. This is a great supplement to yoga and cardio workouts. I yearn for a gym in this city that offers both good classes and equipment, but until there is, I'll be working out at my bare bones gym, Pure Barre and various yoga studios When you compare Pure Barre to yoga, the price is kind of astronomical. (At Life yoga, 90 minute classes as low as 8-10 dollars a pop) but they do have promotional specials and in March, if you take 20 classes you are eligible for a month of unlimited at 100.00, which is pretty sweet.

I am a beginner to the gym workout life. I've always worked out at home with the little equipment…read morethat I have such as bands, free weights, and running around the neighborhood. I used to be a part of a commercial gym prior to joining PFRX. It was one of those gems that were always clean, had a nice inexpensive monthly rates, and many many machine options. The problem for me was, that every time I went, I had to wait a turn or alter my workout due to the lack of availability of machines. I found that when I would be able to work out I had to somewhat rush myself through my workout because people would always ask me how many more reps do I have left. So I begin to venture out and look for another gym home one that could accommodate all of my needs. That is what PFRX has done for me. There are friendly and knowledgeable staff during staffing hours, location is always clean, if I have any questions on how to use a machine properly during staff hours, someone is happy to help me. They have trainers available. And most importantly for me, they aren't as crowded as your commercial gyms, which allows me the access to mini machines, and to be able to get a workout in without someone asking am I using this machine or how many reps do I have left? For me, those are huge factors! Now, yes, this is not a commercial gym and the price is very reasonable when you are investing in your health and wellness. I am truly enjoying my time at PFRX and I am really looking forward to our relationship in the coming years. Oh wait! I didn't mention the variety of machines and services they have. Wanna know, book your tour! You won't be disappointed.
