I understand why everyone loves you and your kindhearted staff so much: you're simple, savvy and understated, yet you seem to have thought of everything. Maybe that's why there's a feeling of quiet confidence and a general lack of flashy features that other hotels seem so fond of flaunting. Your location is practically perfect in every way, your lobby is warm and welcoming, you have a beautiful wine list, and I can't emphasise enough how walking in your massive heavy-as-hell door makes me feel like I'm home. Must be the snooker table. Your thoughtful features and large rooms don't hurt either. (Face lotion? YES!) You might be my ideal hotel if you offered wireless internet in your rooms. That's it. That's my only note for improvement. I appreciate that you're incorporating aspects of your über cool history as a Billards Room and Herald HQ into your present day operations, but it's time to join us in the interwebz revolution. The Lindrum itself used to be a billiards warehouse and it tastefully kept some of its heritage artifacts, which all-in give this hotel something you don't find in the anonymous chain hotels. The exceptionally friendly and helpful desk clerk also makes a mean pot of tea and you can choose from an endless selection including many sweet and unusual varieties. Rooms are quite spacious with soaring ceilings. The beds are very comfy which is handy considering I took the 28 hour "direct" flight from London. While the Lindrum has wifi in the lobby, in the rooms there is only a wired connection (as a plus it's free). The lack of in-room wifi is a bit of a downer for the business traveller, but otherwise this hotel is A+ in my book and a great place to stay if you are looking for a quirky independent hotel experience.

It is also close to public transport. The room is large and clean. The bed is comfortable. Once you discover the TV is in the cupboard it works OK too. We had tea downstairs in the restaurant and it was good too. 10/10 for our waitress as she was friendly and helpful too. Sometimes it works to your advantage to be a bit disorganised.

It's right on busy Queens road and with not much entertainment / eateries within walking distance. Rooms are really old, ragged carpet and dusty TV cabinet. Some rooms looks out to office building next door, so if you want a view make sure to ask. The upside is that staff are friendly. But old and dated accommodation. The rate in August 2016 was also higher than what I would expect after seeing the rooms.

I'd really, REALLY love to give this lovely place at least one more star in my review as it was…read moreabsolutely gorgeous & the location where my partner and I had shared several wonderful moments that I'm sure we'll look back on fondly in the years to come, but there were a few things that made my experience a little less than satisfactory. As Melbourne is a windy city to begin with, I of course was expecting to hear some form of noise once the cool weather kicked in one night. But what I heard was enough to leave me panicking for my safety and unsure whether I should leave the building or not. The wind blew right through the minuscule cracks or gaps in the floors, walls, ceilings, etc (wherever they may be cleverly hidden). But the worst part was the creaking. I kept thinking someone was breaking into the apartment via window or door, despite both having always been locked and shut. Turns out the creaking came from the massive wall opposite from the living room sofa. I even had to google if this was a normal occurrence for apartments in levels as low as floor 11 out of 69 (or so). Apparently newer buildings but in Melbourne seem to have this alarming noise issue in common as they've been built with minor mistakes in planning (from what I've read it has something to do with where the bolts or screws are attached in the inner wall foundational structure). Next issue, the bathroom. At first glance it was absolutely lovely. And it really was. But there was no hand soap or bar to use for either our bodies or our hands. There was however, a massive bottle of body wash made from animal milk (which I am dangerously allergic to) on the shower shelf, that I of course could not use. Luckily there was another massive bottle next to it labeled shampoo, which had no ingredients that would react to my body (thankfully!). So I pretty much washed my hair, body, and hands with shampoo each day/night. Not ideal but it worked. The only problem with that was there was no conditioner. My 3 feet of straight black hair had been knotted the entire time without condotioner to use and the half hour of combing I had to do just to detangle it each time I washed it left pieces of my hair everywhere. To finish off on a lighter note, and I know this is going to sound snobby, but it might as well be mentioned that there were at least 2 of everything in the dish cupboard which was very much appreciated, but of course there was only one wine glass and one champagne glass. It was funny at the start but became a bit annoying to have to use one wine glass as a unit of measure to dangerously pour (over the sink) into his champagne glass twice each time we both wanted an equal sized drink. I really did love this place otherwise, and my partner even mentioned that the layout of the apartment was something he wanted to look for in our first home. It was really just the little things that made it all blow out of proportion. I wouldn't recommend staying at a higher floor just for the sake of everyone's sanity when the wind and creaking starts to act up, but if you can prepare for missing/unavailable items beforehand, it really is a lovely location to stay at. The bed is comfortably firm yet soft, the layout is gorgeously simple and modern, and you can cook your own meals. And who can say no to the nighttime city view?

The tram stop directly in front of the hotel and the train station just steps away made it easy to get anywhere in Melbourne. The hotel itself was well maintained and beautifully presented. A month is a long time to stay anywhere so naturally a few hiccups arose within our stay. What stood out was the way the staff handled them. They have two locations in this neighbourhood South Yarra Grand which is 5 star and South Yarra Davis Street which is 3.5 star. If like me you are saving your dollars for the shops in Melbourne South Yarra Davis Street is the best choice. On my multiple stays here I have always been met with exceptional service! The staff are helpful, friendly and accomodating and more then happy to help out with any requests you may have during your stay. There are two accomodation choices: studio apartments and one bedroom apartments. The studio appartments only contain a shower so if you are wanting a bath in your room I would recommend the one bedroom. The studio apartments themselves are well appointed with street views and they are spacious and open with plenty of room to move. There is also no lift access so if you have trouble walking up and down stairs it pays to request a ground floor when you book. All apartments come with a kitchen and dining area; coffee, tea and milk is supplied. Located about a 70 metre walk from South Yarra Train Station there are also trams at the end of Davis Street on Toorak Road. The location is brilliant it is literally in the middle of everything and walking distance from the vibrant Chapel Street. A train to the MCG will take you about 3 minutes, the city around 5 minutes. Surrounding suburbs such as St Kilda and Windsor are easily accessible by tram. Room prices start from around $90.00 night and the most you will pay here is around $130.00 per night. Parking is available at the rear of the building and is free of charge to guests.

The units are equipped with a kitchenette, living space, sleeping area, large bathroom with a washer/dryer unit. Nicely maintained and functional. I appreciated that they even offered different types of pillows, including memory foam. There were plugs for your devices on the nightstand and even a wireless charging pad and high speed WiFi. Completely modern features. Mezzanine area had breakfast in the morning, snacks throughout the day, and a free wine bar in the late afternoon. Breakfast featured great items like scrambled eggs, poached eggs with hollandaise, bacon, sausages, fruit, breads, pastries yogurt, specialty coffee machine and various teas. There's even a billiard table. Staff were so friendly and accommodating. The hotel is centrally located with shops, cafes, bodegas, and restaurants all within a short walk. We even walked from the bus station with our luggage. I would without a doubt stay here again.
