I went to this man about 13 years ago in 2013 when I was 20 years old. I have not stopped thinking about the interaction I had with him. I was shocked to see these reviews and that he is still practicing. I was recommended to him by a coworker who worked with him previously. My doctor had suggested I see a psychiatrist to help figure out medications for depression/anxiety. At my appointment he asked me standard questions and asked about my family situation. I informed him I am the middle child of 5. I also told him I have anxiety and depression and had a previous attempt. This man looked a 20 year old girl in the face and said that I was faking my diagnosed mental health issues for attention. I somehow made it through the rest of the appointment, maybe 5 or 10 minutes, and then cried in my car the entire way home. This man should not be practicing medicine. It is genuinely appalling to me that he is still allowed to see patients all these years later. Luckily I did find help elsewhere where my mental health was taken seriously. I often think about how many other patients have gone to see him in similar situations and then were not able to get the help they needed because of this man's ego. Since seeing Dan, I have struggled with mental health and have been wary of seeing psychiatrists because of this incident. I hope Dan steps on Legos barefoot everyday. I hope there is never quite enough ketchup to dip his fries into. I hope his belt loop gets caught on the door handle every time he is already frustrated and running late. Upon being referred Daniel asked me two personal questions about my psych history and immediately told me that because of previous hospitalizations years ago he can't see me and that I need a "higher level care." I used to be an LICSW on a psychiatric unit and know this is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. Basically encouraging people to hide their psych and/or substance abuse history. After reading some of the other reviews it's pretty clear that this person should not be practicing medicine and is not fit to be a provider of mental health services. read more

I was referred to Daniel Ackroyd by a friend who sees him for anxiety. She forewarned me that he was very strange but I figured that wouldn't be a problem since he was just going to be prescribing me anxiety medication that my pcp had previously prescribed and I wouldn't have much contact with him. Two other friends who no longer see him also warned me that he was a bit odd. I had a hard time getting in touch with him using both phone numbers I found online. He apparently does not have a receptionist as most doctors and does not answer his phone calls. He only corresponds through text messages so I was eventually able to contact him through text message. I set up an appointment and met him at 5:30pm (he does not work mornings). When I met with him it was pretty creepy as he was the only person in the office. My friends were correct in that he is quite odd. He asked me the usual questions that doctors ask and then prescribed me my prescriptions. They are not refillable so I had to go see him every 30 days for a refill. I understand if it was for a narcotic such as Xanax but one of them was for Paxil. My pcp always just had automatic refills on the Paxil and if I needed more Xanax I would make an appointment to see him. For some reason when I went to see him for the 2nd time he stated that he would no longer refill my Xanax because he felt that I had a drinking problem and "did not feel comfortable prescribing Xanax due to excessive drinking". I had told him on my previous visit that sometimes a glass or two of wine during the week will control my anxiety but I obviously didn't want to self medicate with alcohol. He took this as me stating that I drank multiple glasses of wine each night and had a drinking problem. Not sure how he came to that conclusion. So anyways, I was fine with not being prescribed Xanax and asked him to increase my Paxil from 20mg to 40 mg. It was working at that dosage and I no longer needed the Xanax or the occasional glass of wine to curb my anxiety. He was happy that my prescription was working and refilled it for me. I set up my appointment for the following month and he wrote it down on one of his cards as a reminder and gave it to me. As I was leaving he told me to have a good night and that he would see me in a month. He had previously texted me the night before an appointment to confirm my appointment on the following day but this time I did not receive the confirmation text. Maybe he just forgot? I had been sick with the flu so the morning of my evening appointment I texted him to reschedule from that evening to the following week on the same weeknight and time. I never heard back from him. I called and texted him every single day for an entire week after that and never received a text or call-back. I attempted to refill my prescription twice and each time he did not respond to the pharmacy to approve my refill. On my last text to him I asked to confirm that he was receiving my texts and also expressed concern that since he was not approving my refills I would be forced to stop taking the medication he had prescribed cold turkey which made me very nervous. It has now been numerous weeks and I have not heard from him and have "detoxed" from my prescription which was crippling and cost me time out of work. I recently found someone else and just started taking my Paxil again. When I told my new doctor about the situation he stated that he had heard of Dan and that it was very unprofessional for a doctor to do this to a patient and that I should contact the state medical board to report him (which I did). I should have listened to the strange reviews of his former and current patients instead of contacting him in the first place but I have learned my lesson. I suggest that if you are referred to him by your pcp or other doctor that you run as far away as possible in a different direction. I can deal with a doctor who is creepy and only works nights in an empty office and only corresponds through text but for a doctor to stop all contact without warning and reason is not only unethical but is detrimental to his patients health. I should have looked him up on Yelp from the beginning as it seems that other patients have had similar experiences with him. Be very, very wary of this guy as there is something not quite right with him. I was forced to rate him so I gave him 1 star. In reality I would have rated him with a negative star! I first met Dan in 2010, when he served as my therapist at a different practice. I was happy to find out that he was now a medication provider, as I had always found our meetings to be very relaxed and Dan was very easy to talk to. I started seeing Dan in 2017 for medication, and he was very professional, and still his easy-going and laid back self. Dan helped me to manage my medication in a very understanding and empathic way. I have personally referred 3 clients to Dan, and all will say the same, that they are very pleased with Dan's services. A five star rating for sure! read more

I've been a patient of Dan for many year. I think Dan is great! He's funny, kind and caring. The first time I met him, he informed me he doesn't do psych counseling, I would need to go elsewhere. During the appt, as we are chatting, he does offer insight. I know he has broad knowledge of my diagnoses, and has prescribed many different meds till we found something that worked. I am so surprised to see neg. reviews. Talk about strange. Paxil/Xanax story sounds strange. For Paxil, you could've called for a refill from your PCP! Dan office was one of 4, all independent providers. It was an updated, well decorated neat and clean space. No need to be ascared! He squeezed you in for a visit, and your scared of an empty office.?! Medical professionals have the right to refuse patients. Dan plays by the rules, is professional and very honest and sincere. I'm surprised that he didn't text you back...oh you wanted a phone call! Ok, enough about you. I prefer texts. Very efficient. Since Covid-19, Dan does remote telehealth. Dan is a very caring guy. Yes text message are his preferred way to communicate to schedule appointments, so what's the big deal. He is a family man, cares very much about his patients and wants to meet with most people on a monthly basis. SO what is so hard about meeting a provider monthly? He was really caring with my son as well. I think he is a good provider. Keep in mind he is mostly for medication management. If you need more than that he might not be the right fit for you. He also has a very large client load, and that is why he keeps his schedule with text messages. He is not a large practice, he is a one guy shop so their is no administrative staff. If you need more than this, look else where. But if you need med mgmt, and wants someone that responds, then give Dan a try. I think he is a great and very caring person. read more

I was told this man was covering for my primary. I called him, left a message. He returned my call. After giving him information he needed, he told me he didn't think he could prescribe my medication. I asked, why not and he said, "You are too old" and said he would call me back the next day. He was rude and condescending. I had not given him any reason to treat me in that manner. I spent hours researching the medication and could find nothing that indicated age was a problem. The call was returned today, but not by him. This person gave a lot of information that was not true, but was at least she was civil and polite. If you are already having problems, do not speak with him. He will just make you feel worse. To echo M. L., "Don't bother". read more
