Dr. Berenter is the best! How do I know? My 1st question was "has this surgery changed in 30 plus years? AND told him my story", his reply was "no, but you will not be in that kind of pain, if much at all"! Max 2 weeks in a boot and then back into shoes. Well, I wanted to believe him but really didn't. I have had a number of surgeries in my 70 years, and this is the only one I remember like it was yesterday. I knew I had to proceed, low and behold I don't even think I took 1 pain pill. In a week I told him I was ready to get back to my life and he said, "not so fast, you need to wear the boot at least another week, so you don't mess up what I did". Oh darn! I did and have never had a problem since. He also saw my left foot, as it too had a big bunion, but said, "until you are in pain", let's leave it alone. 3 years later, I am now in pain (it's not a pain you forget). I went to see Dr. Berenter and said it's time. He x-rays my foot and says, let's book it. I am going in next week for my surgery and not concerned a bit because I know he is the best and have referred many people to him in my senior community. The only thing that would be better is if his office was up in our neck of the woods. LOL

I self diagnosed the problem and went to an oncologist who confirmed my suspicion and had radiation therapy. That solved the problem luckily. If I hadn't been proactive, he wouldn't have given me the proper care.

He is just such a sweet guy too. Very humble and cordial. He is upfront, tells you what to expect upfront and actually see you himself for aftercare and check ups. His team is also fantastic. Caring and they keep everyone up to date on whats happening when your person gets out of surgery, what to expect and what to do. Just all around you feel that everyone is in the best hands. Hands down, I would recommend him every time and I actually do every time someone asks me about a surgeon here, as I also work in the Medical field.

Of course the injections hurt a bit( my trick is to have an assistant hold the freeze spray one the place where MD or PA is injecting (during the entire injection time). He's a great communicator, very knowledgable, explained the process of my surgery to the point that I looked forward to it. I feel very lucky to have had his availability on the day of my accident. Prior to my decision to proceed with surgery, Dr. Hackley gave me objective information to make the right decision. He patiently answered all of my questions (and I ask a lot of those given my background in engineering). I felt very well taken care of at Mammoth Lake Hospital (where I had my surgery). I've been hospitalized before, but I've never experienced a group of medical professions of this caliber. Objectively, it came down to second and third opinions of how my surgery went. Since I don't live in the same state, I had my 6-week post op imaging and followup at a different orthopedic surgeon (one of the best in my state). I also had a radiologist look at my post-op x-rays, and 6 week post-op x-rays and they both commended the work that was done and the precision of my bone-reconstruction. Dr. Hackley really cares for patients. He's followed up with me and given me the crucial insight I needed at the right time. He makes himself available to patients, treated with me with positivity and respect. I really feel he's in my team of medical recovery. Even though I live in a different state I will continue to fly to San Diego for follow ups for my continued recovery.
