Oh boy, oh boy ! Driving 105 miles to train in another school is one of a kind of experience I didn't want to pass on. Chase a 12 year old picked me for a section, was I shocked out of my mind to see what this small 12 year old could do ! He basically shredded my body and made me tap out a few times in the few minutes our match lasted. Impressive! It shows how efficient training can be when is done with the right people. Renzo Gracie Philly is easily the best place to train in the city. They have many classes throughout the day to fit any schedule (including women's classes, BJJ fundamentals, MMA, Muay Thai, Kids classes, and cardio kickboxing classes. As a member, you aren't restricted in how many classes you can take per week or month, and their member pricing is excellent. Starting out in BJJ is intimidating for anyone, but you will not find a more welcoming group of instructors or students anywhere in the city. As a new student, you will never be pressured to put yourself in a position that makes you uncomfortable. There are many upper belt students in every class that you can tell genuinely enjoy taking the time to instruct and teach lower belts during classes, which has both increased my learning curve and my enjoyment of BJJ. I have taken classes taught by Daniel Gracie, Sideco Honor, and Cody Heir, and while they have all been extremely mentally and physically challenging they are really a lot of fun. The coaches are all very knowledgeable, patient, experienced, and kind. My fellow students are all cool, positive, down-to-earth people. I've been training here for 4 years. There are classes during the day it at night which makes it easier to fit into any schedule. Such a great group of people. Everyone is so welcoming from kids to adults. Everyone has different goals and we're all at different levels but every single person on the mats has something to offer. As a middle age woman with no experience in any martial arts ( or fitness for that matter ) what's so ever, I was super nervous to walk through these doors. I'm glad I did. I was very lucky to find this place and these people. The camaraderie amongst your team mate become more evidently each class. Everyone is extremly helpful and easy going. This is the place to learn and practice Jiu Jitsu, period. When I first arrived, I was welcomed by Sideco Honor and Daniel Gracie, two great instructors of the art, who made me feel very comfortable when talking with them. Daniel Gracie has a high level of experience and track record. For those who don't know, Daniel Gracie has an impressive BJJ and MMA career resume, winning medals in some of the best grappling competitions around the world and fighting in the IFL and Pride FC, along with Renzo Gracie. Sideco is currently a Mix Martial Arts (MMA) fighter and champion at CFFC yet, they are so humble and down to earth that it made me feel like I was making the right choice by training here. The students are very motivated to come and train here. They welcomed me to the mat with open "guards", and treated me like a brother. To me, that speaks volumes, as the students are a direct reflection of the instructors and their teachings. Daniel genuinely cares about his students and watches carefully as the students practice and roll with each other, correcting and suggesting when he sees something that needs improvement and also making sure that more experienced students don't go too rough on the newer ones. The way the schedule is set up is awesome, as you can train six to seven days a week, staring at 11:00 am everyday with emphasis for everybody from kids, to beginners, to advanced to MMA fighters. We even have Muai Thai, with a great instructor from American Beach Muay Thai, Rafael Pinguim Fagundes Machado.
