The attorneys here take time to evaluate any civil litigation issue you have and the…read morerepresentatives also listen to any concerns you address on calls. The only thing I would say is that they can be quite expensive. The dispute involved my experience with Evie Bernal of Novel House Publishing, who operates a vanity setup model. This publisher engaged in bait-and-switch pricing and she has severely violated deceptive trade practices in direct violation of the Texas DTPA. The attorney I met was able to see through that when he already saw my first exhibit saying, "I see a lot of bait-and-switching here." I sued her because my money I paid for platform uploads got falsely reclassified as "comprehensive novel editing" under this ugly pink slip she created. Attorney verified that her billing practices are FRAUDULENT and the phantom charge she wrote for something was never actually delivered. The reality was actually her little team she has did no developmental or line editing, and instead I had to do my own heavy editing. The biggest issues I encountered were the lack of transparency, no documentation of services, no documentation of what I was actually being charged for, inconsistent explanations, and high-pressure sales tactics. I signed a vague contract for that listed only 1 service as "Basic Editing" but after 22 days, I was informally quoted of what she calls a "Publishing Package" (she uses this misleading terminology instead of calling it distribution). Months later, I realized that the hundreds of dollars she informally quoted for publishing platforms were actually her own inflated prices, not the platforms' actual costs. All legal consultations also confirmed that she threw some arbitrary and gibberish numbers, manually forcing the invoice to land as flat $900. Her stated prices do not add up to the total she charged. A major problem I realized later was that she sold the final step of the publishing process when my manuscript was not even edited and DID NOT GO THROUGH ANY EDITING PHASES. Her vague contract NEVER DOCUMENTED any editing phases. After she got paid, she began performing the steps out of order instead by doing cover design and formatting. Poor quality of work was done by a middleman she has outsourced my book to some loser in Bangladesh. I decided to do my own developmental and line editing in the next 2 months. By the time, I reached out in December, my whole history was rewritten. Attorney saw I remained professional and gave her a response with listing her own prices she quoted for the platforms. She retaliated instead by revealing that the price for IngramSpark is $1,299. She then began calling immediately after I walked away as a desperate attempt to pull me back into the predatory relationship I had with her. Everything I experienced from Evie Bernal, her fraudulent documents, aggressive communication, the bait-and-switch pricing, and the lack of transparency in her work ethics exactly matches how vanity presses operate. The attorney helped me learn that publishing independently gives you far more control over your money and helps you avoid hidden costs, predatory price markups, bundled services with no clear documentation, and the emotional manipulation I experienced with this publisher.
