From the Darleks to The Silence, my little nails have held every manner of Who villain and hero. It's a personal guilty pleasure to be sporting pretty lady nails that are subtly sci-fi themed. You see, I started getting my digits done because i'm a fidgeter. Any point of stress in my constantly stressful job led me to pick and pull at my nails/fingers. The result was a gruesome looking set of hands. These war wounded fingers were a constant embarrassment, given that i'm 30 and often in business meetings where I don't want to look like I have the hands of a five year old with ADD. So I got myself a set of gel nails, but to counter the very adult move - I made sure they had a little nod to my inner child as well. My hands have long since healed and the little Who nails have become a favourite habit of mine. I had a brilliant nail tech in Vancouver and upon landing in Edinburgh, was getting more and more anxious that I wouldn't find a nail artist up to snuff. There's a lot of folks in town that claim it, but the look of terror when I ask for a Tardis, says it all. Until Diana. Folks... I have the fraking Van Gogh's Exploding Tardis on my right hand today. Because this lady is a wizard. (pictures soon, I promise!) Diana was a godsend for my little geeky/girly pick me up. She works out of Lotus Hair Salon and you book your appointment via her Facebook page. The first time I went in, I asked for the simplest Who nails I could (11th Doctor Love) and she told me to come back with something more difficult next time. Instant fan. Not only does she do solid, proper gel nails (many people advertise gel nails but are actually crafting acrylics or simply gel shellack) but this woman is a MASTER of nail art. Honest to gosh, go snoop her instagram. Double, triple, extra bonus awesome? She's incredibly reasonable for the work she does. A fill today and THE FREAKING EXPLODING TARDIS that covers three of my nails came out to £32 - which is about the same as another spot was looking to charge me for a simple gel polish/nail art duo. Plus, i'm not the most delicate of ladies (shocking right?) and these puppies have held up through it all. I highly, HIGHLY suggest if you're looking for a set of gels or just a funky design on what god gave ya, that you pop over and book yourself an appointment. Then spend the next week or so thinking up what you want - because this lady doesn't bat an eye... no matter how crazy it sounds. EXPLODING TARDIS? She can do that. I've found my new nail guru. I love doing my nails myself and grow bored of my manicures quickly so I tend not to pay to get them done, but I'm no nail technician! My nails were in such a bad state shape-wise and I really needed to see a professional to sort the situation out! You can book in with Sacha via email and she works out of the Toni Cook salon. When I visited it was in their old location in Merchant City, but she informed me that they were in the process of moving to a swanky new salon just off Buchanan Street (above The Lab, where they are currently situated). I booked in about 2 weeks before my desired appointment time and I would recommend booking early as she's a busy little bee and appointments go quickly! I opted to go for a gel polish on my own nails rather than false acrylic nails. While I waited my turn in the salon I got a little nail wheel to browse the colours. There's a lot to choose from, lots of nice pastel-y colours and lovely dark vampy colours, as well as some sparkly numbers! I didn't really know what sort of design or look I wanted so Sacha suggested a few looks to me and I ended up going for a V design on some accent nails in alternating colours. I was getting my nails done specifically for my friends wedding and had a picture of my dress with me and Sacha helped me pick out some colours that matched well. Sacha was very professional and chatty during my manicure. She remembered me from the Yelp event which was really nice! I felt very relaxed while I was there and it seemed like my manicure flew in! I've been to some really standoffish nail techs in the past and have been entirely ignored while I've had my nails done, so I appreciate when someone can hold a conversation and still deliver an A+ manicure! I loved my nails when there were done and after 2 weeks they're still looking as good! My manicure came in at £25 which I think is pretty good considering how long it'll last. You can pay with cash or via paypal, card payments are also accepted but require a £1 service fee. Gel polish removal comes in at £4 which is nothing if you don't want to wreck your nails doing it yourself!! I've already booked in for my next manicure! I'd really recommend Sacha if you're looking to get your nails done, she does a banging manicure, she's super nice and her wee dog (who is really well behaved and comes to work with her) is so cute!! :)

Lucky for my efficiency, I got a spot, and told her I wanted gel nails! I remember Queen B getting em and they lasted forever! Perfect, since I'll be away from Glasgow for 3 weeks! Anyway, I easily found the salon via Yelp, headed through the alley and up the stairs. To my pleasant surprise, was greeted by Sacha's wee chihuahua. He cuddled me while I waited for Sacha to be done with the previous client. What a good way to keep me occupied! Haha So, Sacha is a wonderful manicurist. She uses a brand of polish from the UK (I don't remember the name unfortunately. Artist polish? Something like that) and says she insists on only using those because of its high quality. I appreciate her sincerity! And the nail polish is after all, super nice! She's also very welcoming, friendly and open to trying fun artsy things in your nails. "Open to experiments" she says! :) she uses an LED nail dryer thinggy that makes your gel nails set asap and that's like super amazing to me haha no more wrecked nails! Anyway I love my nails! I have candy canes and a wee Christmas pudding on my ring fingers! The salon is spacious. Sacha is amazing and bubbly! Will definitely go back next year for a touch up or some new nail art hehehe Highly recommend!

There is 6 nail stations and 6 pedicure seats. Although the space is small, it seemed roomy, compared to other nail salons. I enjoyed a brief chit chat with one of the nail technicians before she began getting to work on my chipped, sad looking nails. The have a range of general OPI colours, however if you want something special, best to bring your own and gel polishes. Normal buff, shape and shellac is a reasonable $30 (same as acrylic refills) and $40 for a pedicure and a manicure is $25. Get in, while the 20% is still going and it is reasonably quiet.
