Need donuts at 1am?! This is your place. Believe it or not...there will probably be a line! I was traveling for work and asked where I could find the best donuts in the morning. They said you had to crosstown, but Dan's was the place to go. I got there at 4:30 in the morning and believe it or not there were four construction workers ahead of me in line. Sidenote: Things that I have learned in life: if you go past a diner or a restaurant, and it is filled with police cars or construction vehicles. it's a winner. ALWAYS! I got two dozen mixed donuts and took it to a safety meeting. Everyone inhaled the donuts and they were excited I had chosen the best local donuts. My sister and I arrived at 12:50 am on Sunday March 15 and had to wait in line about 20 minutes which wasn't too bad. However, the service today was very rude!! There were 2 girls working behind the counter and the younger of the 2 was very nice and has been there every time I have come (probably 4 times total over the last few years bc I live almost an hour away). However, the older lady was extremely rude! She told us she could help us so we walked to the side she was on. We were getting a dozen donuts and started naming what we wanted. She had to walk behind the younger girl to the other end to get the donuts we wanted and then proceeded to ask if we wanted anything else from that end. We weren't sure bc we were still trying to decide on a couple so she came back down to us (which was only a few steps btw). We then asked for a few more varieties and she looked at us and said "NO I'm NOT going back down there to get anymore for you. I already asked you if you wanted anything else from down there!" She proceeded to say "YOU do this every time and I'm NOT doing it anymore!" We were very confused and I'm sure the look on our faces was one of shock because we had no clue why she was being so rude! We said we don't live around here so we aren't here very often. Her response was "YES YOU DO!" "I am NOT GOING BACK DOWN THERE!" what??? we can count on one hand the number of times we have been there and isn't that your job to get the donuts that your customer wants? She then looked at us and said "if you want those donuts you need to go to the end of the line and wait because I AM NOT going back down there!!" SERIOUSLY??? We already waited our turn in line! I'm still in complete disbelief and cannot believe she never would get us the donuts we wanted. I will say the donuts are amazing and we do really love them but I'm just not sure if we will ever be back as long as she is working for you! read more

I've been coming to Dan's my whole life. I used to walk there in the mornings as a kid and it would be the highlight of my whole day. As a teenager, my friends and I would wait in that long line in the dark when they first opened around 1am and the donuts were still warm. This is most definitely a Kokomo staple. Donuts are one of my all time favorite foods. Whenever I travel, I look for the local donut shop or the famous place with the hot now sign. I have tried hundreds of different places, no joke, but no one ever beats Dan's. Is it the nostalgia? Well, maybe a little. But those cream filled chocolate, strawberry, and maple cream filled donuts? Those would be on my list of last meal items. They are perfect every time. My family prefers the apple fritters, which are huge. The prices are excellent here. While "cash only" can be an inconvenience, I'm used to it. Whenever I come to town to visit family, I always call in an order the night before for scheduled pick up because they typically sell out, especially on weekends. Dan's saved the day when we rolled into kokomo about 4am, & we're starving & nothing else in the entire town is open, but dans! Their donuts are amazing! Our favs are anything cream filled! Okay, this used to be THE place when I was in high school at 1 am (hey, its better than going out and being a crazy teen, right?!) I was passing through my hometown of kokomo late at night, so I decided to stroll down memory lane. If you want to be there at 1 am, make sure you get in line, yes, IN LINE, by 1245 at least. We decided to get out of my warm jeep and get in line at 12:50. We waited almost a half hour in 24 degree weather. Was the wait worth it? ABSOLUTELY. These are hands down the best donuts in all of Indiana. Yes, better than Longs in Indy. You can't compete with Dans. Get the chocolate frosting donut with pudding filling and it will change your whole outlook on donuts.. The only thing I wish would change is that the employees were nicer, they always seem to have an attitude. This isn't a once in awhile occurrence, its every time I've been. But im willing to put up with attitude for magical donuts. read more

I did not wait in line at 12:30 AM but rather walked in at 9:00 AM. Surprisingly, the selection was slimmer than I had anticipated, but then again, Dirty Dan's had been open for eight hours already. (How many people make donut runs in the middle of the night?!) Still, I liked how any flavor came in multiple varieties: yeast long john, round yeast, and cake. My boyfriend and I ordered three donuts--strawberry long john, apple fritter, and maple cake--and just by picking them up I could tell that we were in for a sweet, pillowy treat. ...I love it when I'm right. Each donut melted in your mouth, which is a telltale sign of a damn good anything. They weren't too bread-y, greasy, or dry as some donuts can be...just some exceptional classic donuts. Although I would order any of them again, you can't walk out of Dan's without an apple fritter. Not only is it the largest donut in the case, but also this ginormous glazed yeasty beast is packed with cinnamon and chunks of apple. It's a winner for sure. Stopped by this morning as I was driving from Indy to South Bend. You see, these were the donuts my Papaw always got for us when my family visited him and grandma in Kokomo and he would have been 99 this week, so a birthday memory of a great man. Walking in was like a nostalgic blast from the past.The smells brought me right back to being a kid and Saturday morning when we'd all sit around the kitchen table with a box of donuts in our pajamas. But on to the donuts...I LOVE all the maple donuts...maple cream, maple cake, maple long john. The cinnamon swirl glazed are also amazing. The yeast donuts are light and fluffy, with the perfect sweetness. Thank you, Dirty Dan's for great donuts that made great memories over the last 34 years. read more

Insomnia has its perks at times and this beautiful Thursday morning happened to be one of those. Since I was the last one awake in my dwelling I decided to see what the fuss was about and treat myself! I showed up just before 2am to find plenty of parking and only a few tables occupied. Dan's offers a nice variety of tastiness so it took me a little bit to decide on my order.I wound up with 2doz randomly picked donuts and 2doz donut holes and only spending $16. The boxes smelled so good, I couldn't help but to sample a couple in the parking lot. They didn't not disappoint! The refrigerator stocked with milk and other drinks was a great bonus! In the future labels would make it easier to identify what kind of donuts are in the display and would probably help keep lines moving. Overall the experience was good and the donuts even better! It's another Saturday morning Donut adventure! We had heard great things about Dan's so we decided to make the trek to Kokomo (and yes, it was worth it!) Dan's is a great little hole-in-the-wall donut shop! When you walk in, you know quickly that this old school! No fancy schmancy donuts here..but you will find super soft fresh melt-in-mouth donuts. We tried several ranging from bismarks to cake ones. The glazed cinnamon roll was by far the best (it was still warm!), but all of them were very good. In the dark hours of the night, I so enjoyed my hot and fresh glazed donut and their unique lemon -- both filled and iced -- donut. Also, I have eaten their yummy donut holes and cinnamon bun. Apple fritters looked scrumptious and generous with the apples but I'll have to try it next time. The crowd of all ages came about midnight before the doors opened at 1 AM. If there is one thing I learned on my recent visit to Indiana, it's that Kokomo locals are very serious about Dan's bakery goods and will stand in long lines to get a hot pecan roll. Coming from Los Angeles, where there is a doughnut shop on every corner, I was seriously intrigued by this Dirty Dan's phenomenon. I had to experience it for myself, so I joined the line of hoosiers and waited for some fresh bake goods. Fortunately, I got my doughnut craving on a Thursday night so the line wasn't blocks long. In effort to give a fair review to all my fellow Yelpers, I ordered two dozen and sampled them until I could no longer stuff another bite in my mouth. The doughnuts are good! better than the average street corner doughnut shop I am accustomed too but pecan rolls (which I believe are only sold on Fridays and Sunday) are fabulous! Don't let the shop's nickname Dirty Dan's fool you.. It's an adorable little structure and the inside is the cleanest doughnut shop I have ever been too. The staff were nothing to write home about but all of the friendly local doughnut fans made up for it. This place is a must! Every morning the donuts are made fresh and they are open until they are sold out or noon; whichever comes first. I will warn you though that between 1 AM and 2:30 AM is their busiest times and you should expect a line. They have all different kinds of donuts available as well. Be prepared if you do come early to be in line with a lot of high school and college kids. I've never had a donut from them that I didn't like and they are always so consistent with their product! Unbelievably delicious!!! Finally, hubby and I stopped in before they had sold out of everything. It was a little before 10 a.m. and they had mostly empty cases; however, we were in luck since they still had apple fritters, bismarcks, and applesauce cake donuts. We both got one of each. These donuts are spectacular. They are often compared to other donut shops, but I haven't found another with the texture of these. They are doughy, easy to chew, flaky, and never hard. I stay the night over night in Kokomo many times just to be able to wake up and go grab some of these perfect donuts. Service is always quick and parking is perfect. read more

Great donuts, always fresh, worth standing in line for at 1am! Friendly staff, too. However, they lose a star for me because they don't have a card machine. They only accept cash and checks. This place is affectionately known as Dirty Dan's and while it may not be anything to look at inside, the food is gooood. My dad would always get a box every Sunday morning before church and we still get them now. They are good every single time, consistency for decades. The dough is soft and chewy, and the filling or frosting is flaky/juicy and flavorful. One of the better donuts I've ever tried. I personally like the jelly filled and cinnamon twists.
