It was the first time we had bitterballen and it was so good that we did not get it on the rest of our trip because we knew nothing else would live up to theirs! It was a busy Saturday night and this place had a table. Well, they gave my friend a burnt piece of lasagna which she was able to snap the black overcooked noodle for the server. My salad arrived with chicken which was cold and tough. Croutons were soggy and the blob of white we determined was mozzarella. The only thing that was worth the money was the sweet potato (no butter) and the French fries. I really felt sorry for the server who was very sweet and was quite embarrassed about the food. He brought us hot French fries which were good. He didn't charge us for those. Overall the ambiance was nice but it was quite loud which wasn't horrible. Not a good choice if you're in a hurry. We ordered appetizers and mains. The appetizers took 45 minutes and we sat for another 45 before finally getting a waiters attention. Our order had been lost, so we had to ask to have the rest cancelled and get the bill for the apps so we could go. The manager initially seemed unwilling to do so but gave in when we started putting on coats. It's a shame the appetizer seemed good. We are visiting from the United States and went to Dante's for a birthday. We were sat and did not see a server for quite awhile, he placed silverware on the table but no menu. We waited for approximately 10 minutes before he finally gave us a menu and then disappeared with out any communication. I had such high hopes to come to this restaurant but I was nothing but disappointed. The restaurant is modern and beautiful but the service was HIGHLY disappointing. Our reservation was for 7:30 which we promptly showed up for but our food and appetizers came out at 10pm... We asked to order and the waitress turned us down because "the kitchen was so backed up". We then had to flag someone down to even place an order a half hour later. To top it off, they brought the meals one by one and they were not the right orders... For reference, I never leave reviews or complain because I find myself a very understanding person but this is outrageous. I do not recommend. read more

The boyfriend and I ate an early dinner here on a cold Amsterdam night. They had tables on the sidewalk, and a few under the patio with heat lamps which is where we ate. There is a rotating door to go inside, but it was too narrow to get a wheelchair in, which is why we ate outside. I ordered olives and bread as an appetizer. Disappointingly, the olives were not of the same caliber of the others I've had throughout the Netherlands. The olives I had at other restaurants were less briny/salty and more flavorful that what I've had in the US. These were pitted and in my opinion, olives with pits are more flavorful. The bread was good, but not amazing. I had the shrimp croquettes which were mini shrimp in a fried, breaded roll on bread. Hanging out in the bar and speaking to people in a friendly manner. It was so lovely. The location is perfect - completely central and one side facing the Singel. The triple fried fries were excellent and my husband's new favourite thing bitter balls were the best (of three places so far!) we've had. After an arty day in Amterdam we were walking around Spui in search of an attractive place to eat. And stumbled upon Dante - beautifully located and stylish in it's classic bistro look. Huge space inside with big bar and cozy tables and nice little terrace. I guess when A-dam is flooded with tourists it's a different experience but we were lucky to find a place on the terrace at dinner time. Food is mainly Italian, but you can even find a burger and nachos on the menu. We ordered Dante Pizza and Ricotta Ravioli with mushroom sauce and arugula accompanied with beer and mojito. Pizza was mediocre and ravioli was just fine, mojito was average. Overall, the experience was not bad but I don't know if it's worth coming to eat again, i'd probably drop by for the cocktails and drinks in a company of friends. The service was strangely unpleasant, but the food was fantastic. I had stopped by this place after a long day of exploring Amsterdam by foot. Everything on the menu looked great and the dish I ended up selecting, the pumpkin ravioli, did not disappoint! However, I was eating alone, so I had decided to walk in and sit at the bar rather than taking up a whole table. The bartender immediately asked if I wanted a drink. I've worked from Dante a few times (using their free wifi) and I like it there. There's a big comfy couch on the canal side of the cafe and I just sat there for long periods of time on some afternoons without the waiters bothering me, except to take my order. The staff have always been friendly though they do look stressed out. I find their cappuccinos to be too foamy too, but that's the case with most places I've been to in Amsterdam. Also, their tables are too small to set a laptop and coffee on :) Lots of tourists and the food is priced accordingly. read more
