I came across Danya through recommendation and after our initial call, my gut told me to move forward with her as our wedding photographer and I am glad that I did! Danya has a very positive and bubbly attitude. I loved her editing style, very bright but natural, based on what I saw online and felt immediately comfortable when we met. TLDR; Danya Chen Photography (Danya) captured our wedding moments that we will cherish for a lifetime and made us feel at ease with her experience, easy going demeanor. She has a great eye + editing skills and was professional throughout with excellent communication, timely gallery deliveries, and in general, just a really pleasant person to work with. We first found Danya Chen Photography through Instagram. Instantly, we knew that her photography and editing style spoke to us. She was actually the first vendor we booked after our venue. We reached out to several photographers, but in the end, it was an easy choice to go with Danya and she absolutely delivered. (1) Communication: After submitting a request form, Danya was prompt with her response, and we were able to set up a virtual meeting. We actually booked with Danya more than a year in advance of our wedding and were planning from out-of-state, but as the date drew closer, she kept on top of it, and got all the information she needed from us (wedding details, shot list, timeline), so that on the day of the wedding, we had no doubt she and her 2nd photographer would photograph everything we wanted whether it was a posed or candid shot. (2) Vibe & Experience: From our intial meeting and engagement photo session (included with our wedding package), my husband and I immediately felt at ease with Danya. She was both personable and had a lot of experience. You know that feeling when a camera comes out and suddenly you don't know how to "act natural"? Even though my husband and I weren't naturals when it came to the more posed pictures, Danya easily guided us with her friendly demeanor and tips. It was obvious that she was a pro at photographing couples (height differences, best face side, hair placement, etc.). It was also a big bonus that Danya has a lot of experience under her belt so she had actually photographed quite a few weddings at our venue and knew how to deal with the outdoor ceremony elements and backlighting of the dinner reception room. Danya even came to our ceremony rehearsal and gave us instructions that ensured our ceremony flowed and allowed for good pictures without us having to be focused on that on the day of. Danya built quick rapport with our wedding party and knew everyone by name. (3) Style: Of course, the first thing that drew us to Danya was her amazing photos. With just a quick look at her Instagram, you can see that she photographs a number of couples and their weddings so beautifully and her editing style is bright and airy. On the day of, she and her 2nd photographer Chrystal worked efficiently and professionally, arriving at their set times and moved us along to stay on schedule and worked through the shot list. However, they were also in the background capturing lots of good candid moments of my husband and me, as well as the wedding guests. Despite the busy wedding season, Danya delivered a highlights gallery very quickly and then delivered the full gallery well within her promised timeline. When we look through the photos, we are instantly transported back to our various wedding moments and can't help but smile and reminisce. The flatlays and detail shots are lovely, but in particular, I love how she captured reactions to wedding speeches and everyone grooving on the dance floor. I also want to mention that the systems she has in place make it easy to access the photos and download. I want to preface this review by saying that I love Danya's work and had been following her for quite some time prior to my engagement. I also SUPER appreciated her getting our photos to us before our engagement party, which was a huge ask and was not expected at all because our session took place only a few weeks before the party. As such, I do not write this review lightly and while I had initially decided against writing a review, I do think that clients who are unable to book with Danya as their primary photographer should know what this may mean. As I mentioned, I was extremely excited to hire Danya as our engagement photographer, but as she currently only does engagement photos for couples who also book their wedding photography with her and we did not yet have a date (or even year) in mind for our wedding, we could not have her as our primary photographer. We instead booked with her associate, Raven, who was available on the weekends. I had also previously seen Raven's work and was happy to have her take our photos. Raven was super fun to work with and so sweet. Our engagement session was on a super gloomy, chilly day, but she was in great spirits, which made everything more bearable. On leaving the session, I had extremely high hopes for how the photos would turn out. However, we were disappointed in how our final album of photos turned out. In hindsight, we could have used a lot more coaching and instruction on how to position ourselves. Several of our photos were very unflattering, whether it was how we were positioned or how the light hit our faces. Attached is one of at least 3-4 photos where I have a glaring patch of light on my forehead while my partner is squinting in the sun, neither of which made for great photos. There were also some photos, where despite the post-processing, you can clearly see someone in a bright blue jacket coming up the cliff behind us, ruining the shot. This photo is also attached with the review. Overall, I have mixed reviews. I had a good experience working with Danya on the front and back end of planning for the session, and I loved working with Raven during the session, but I'm not happy with how the photos turned out. As such, in planning for our wedding, we have booked another photographer. read more

We are SO SO SO happy we went with Danya as our wedding photographer!!! We found Danya on IG and when we saw her work and we knew we wanted her as our photographer. As for the wedding itself, Danya was not only a photographer that day, but also a conductor! She was able to command multiple groups of rowdy family and friends with ease and poise. Our wedding photos came out BEAUTIFULLY and our family and friends still rave about it to this day! Again, Danya is an expert in describing what each person needs to do to get these amazing shots. She simply does not come to merely point and shoot during a wedding; her photos are carefully but efficiently curated when possible and it absolutely reflects in her work. Lastly, I wanted to mention that I started getting nervous during our sunset photos, just due to all the wedding attention and jitters; but Danya was able to calm me down. She was able to remind me that we are just having fun and started to joke around and somehow got my mind off the whole thing. Danya is so empathetic in nature and this made me feel so happy that we decided to go with her. Sometimes folks forget that the bride and groom are human too, and it was nice to have someone there to be an advocate for us during the wedding. I always knew I wanted to use Danya's team for our future wedding. Danya had already done 2 of my friends' weddings, her photos are so lovely, and her price range is very reasonable! My husband was very impressed with how detail-oriented Danya is in sending a helpful questionnaire to fill out before the event. She is very communicative throughout the entire process, and introduced us to her new associate in-training, Chrystal. We chose Chrystal because she had experience working at Hakone Gardens (our venue), which was important to us. Both Danya and Chrystal are easy to talk to and work with! I also want to say that Danya was very accommodating in my request, because it was a 3-hour event, we were thinking of different ways to utilize the entire 6 hours that came with the package! A few days before our event, I was getting over Covid and was very stressed about what that would mean for my vendors. Luckily, Danya and Chrsystal were prepared for such cases: wearing masks and using a longer lens to keep distance, and it was helpful we had an outdoor venue. Chrystal was very clear with directing and posing us from a distance. Her enthusiasm and friendly demeanor was a joy to have around! I first found Danya's services years ago when I was trying to research for Bay Area wedding photographers when my older sister was getting married. My sister preferred a different photography style for her pictures, but I kept Danya's information bookmarked and carefully followed her Instagram for a few years after. What caught my eye in Danya's work as I researched was her incredible attention to detail. In her detail shots from what I saw on Instagram and on her website, her placement and shots feel very intentional and made me wonder who is the person she is capturing on camera and what is their personality like. Years later, I get engaged and my ultimate goal was to get Danya as our photographer. Our initial meeting with her prior to booking was a positive experience. From what I recall, she was very clear in what she can offer and laid out the expectations we should have if we book her. As soon as we ended our meeting, we agreed that we wanted to book her soon. My advice to anyone looking for a photographer is to make sure you ask questions that align with your plans and vision for your big day. We were planning for a Filipino Catholic ceremony, and I wasn't exactly sure what her experience was like in that setting since I did not see a lot of pictures on her Instagram at the time. She has the experience and showed me a gallery of another couple who had their wedding inside of a Catholic church. For our engagement shoot at a garden, she was very good at directing us and nothing ever felt forced. For me personally, I originally wore a white cardigan over my dress as I felt insecure about my arms. She offered to take pictures of us with me wearing my cardigan and without my cardigan so that I have options. After seeing a few pictures with me without my cardigan, it actually looked so much better and I felt more confident in having the cardigan off. As I already mentioned, she is very intentional in her work and knew how to place me so the parts I felt insecure about were not obvious at all in the end product. Additionally, my husband and I have a bit of a height difference, but everything looked natural through careful placement and also her great ability in making sure we were both comfortable throughout the shoot. Considering how introverted my husband and I are, her friendly and helpful demeanor was very much needed! On our wedding day, Danya and her associate, Helena, arrived on time for our getting ready pictures. We informed Danya before our wedding day about some things to keep in mind during a church ceremony. She noted that and still made sure to check in with the church's coordinator to see if there were other rules to keep in mind while she is taking pictures, which we appreciated so much. My husband and I had a bit of a unique circumstance, which made our wedding day timeline a lot tighter from getting ready to before cocktail hour, and yet, Danya still delivered her best and managed to capture great moments and portrait shots. She did an absolutely amazing work to cover us for our multi-cultural wedding, in fact that was what stood out the most for me in her profile that she had covered multi-cultural weddings prior. Danya was such a pleasure to work with! We booked her for our wedding in 2020 and she was so understanding and flexible when we postponed the date twice. We were shy and awkward at our first engagement shoot, but Danya knew exactly what to do and guided us on everything. She made us feel comfortable and it's was always fun during the photoshoots. It felt more like she was a friend who happened to be with us. We had so much fun that we asked Danya to shoot a second engagement session. We wanted glowy, golden hour photos, but the weather didn't cooperate with us at the desired location. She was there early and suggested a different nearby location that had more sun. Unfortunately the clouds moved and covered the sun again, but we appreciated her going the extra mile for us (and the photos still turned out beautiful)! She did our engagement photos along with our 2-day wedding event. My husband and I had an Indian + Chinese + American fusion wedding. It was a unique wedding and we had a lot of different elements which included Chinese Tea Ceremony, Mehndi night, a Baraat, choreographed performances, and lion dancers. Danya was able to keep up with our complicated order of events. She is talented. Danya has a good eye and was able to manage our huge families and round people up to capture the perfect photo. She was very good at being able to command the situation to get the photos we needed while being friendly and approachable at the same time.
