Let's start with the bad, since restaurants usually just answer with "we are glad that you liked it" and totally dismiss the bad. There is a little cart blocking the entrance door, probably to show how difficult it is to enter their premises. The door guy is bold, tattooed and bad tempered, maybe part of the vibe too. Once inside, the next guy is bad tempered too. Maybe they had a bad meeting right before opening. Last bad thing was that 2 out of 4 dishes were cold, unusual in a good restaurant. We ordered 6 dishes: tuna and swordfish device, 2 different octopus dishes, steak dish, beef dish, and vegetarian dish. The dishes were all decent; unfortunately, I was disappointed because I was expecting significantly better flavors. I found the dishes a bit salty and too saucy. Maybe this is considered good Portuguese food and I'm not familiar with the flavors. Overall, we spent over 90 Euros for only a decent meal. So this was a miss for me. The food was all very tasty. We ordered the black pork cheeks in red wine, absolutely delicious, the meat was as tender as it can get, and packed with savor, and the mashed potatoes were silky. The codfish cakes were really good. We ordered the sirloin steak Da Prata 52 and flavor wise it was fantastic, but the meat was tough and also the rest of the plate was lukewarm. I understand that the temperature of the meat was medium rare, but the side was not hot. The grilled angus picanha tasted terrific, but would have expected an angus cut to be more tender. Side also lukewarm. As I have mentioned in my reviews before I like my food hot when it is supposed to be hot. All in all the flavors were on point, temps need work. We went by one weekday evening to check out the spot based on the strong reviews, hoping for outdoor seating, but it was so busy we decided not to go in and they only had one outdoor table by the front door. I'm so glad we went back another day a bit on the earlier side to give it another try! We were able to sit just inside the front door at a high table in the mid-late afternoon and there were only a few other tables seated. The waitstaff were great - I was trying to at least attempt Portuguese pronunciation of the dishes and I got a big smile from a very tattooed and initially serious host/server, who then helpfully provided me with proper pronunciation of each dish so I could try again. He must have let the next server know because when each of our dishes was set down they told us the name in clear Portuguese. Very sweet! This is not your average tapas bar - everything had a bit of a twist to it. At the start they explained they recommend each person chooses at least two small plates to get a meal's worth, and that each dish is portioned for sharing, so you should probably choose at least four things. We chose five: seared foie gras with apple compote (special of the day), braised black pork cheeks with a delicious potato paste kind of accompaniment that was unique and really good, cod confit with chickpea paste, octopus risotto (easily the most bulky dish if you are really hungry!), and the shrimp in coconut marinade (nicely spicy but not too much). They started us with a little amuse bouche of two lentil balls that were very good as well! You can order a glass of house wine which made it easy to decide if you wanted another glass without ordering a whole bottle, and actually had a locally brewed craft IPA on tap, which was hard to find in Portugal! Everything was very good, nice portions to share, and totally worth returning for. Once we had placed our order the server went through it with us to ensure we didn't have any dislikes or dietary issues - even checking if cilantro was OK as a garnish. The servers were very friendly, restrooms were nice (downstairs from the center of the dining area on ground level), and we were able to ask to add a tip to our credit card payment when we settled up. Fantastic place with a great staff. Very friendly, attentive and informative about their dishes. They explained the dishes and how it was cooked. They took the time to explain. Came a couple of times and the second time I came they recognized me and knew my name. I had the vegetables in chickpea tempura, shrimp in olive oil and garlic, octopus risotto, and a very Portuguese sausage Chourico. After 8 days all over Portugal, this might be the very best meal we have had. Can recommend it highly enough.

This was our best meal in Lisbon, though not at all the priciest -- tapas, drinks and tip for two people was 80€. Three important factors made it stand out: selection, seasoning and service. A bit more about each one below. Selection: the dishes here included Portuguese classics with a fresh twist as well as dishes we hadn't seen anywhere before: fried chicken, mushrooms with coconut milk, goat croquettes. Since it was our last meal in Portugal we opted for more traditional dishes, but every one was amazing: the tomato rice was bright and buttery, the fried sardines crispy and light. The "side salad" was enormous and included lots of different vegetables and a balsamic dressing. The prawns were incredibly tender and garlicky, and the fried chicken bites (which we couldn't resist) was juicy inside and crispy outside. It came with potato wedges, and all the fried items had a lemony aioli for dipping. Seasoning: we had seafood at nearly every meal in Portugal, and it was always fresh, but needed salt. Pork and chicken are also common, and green salad, but again, without seasoning these fall flat. We had actually started carrying salt with us by the end of our trip, since requesting it usually brought a blank stare. Amazingly, every dish at da Prata was perfectly seasoned, and we couldn't stop exclaiming at the miracle -- and the aioli really took the fried sardines and chicken to another level, making me wonder why more restaurants don't include it. I also watched the bartender make some cocktails, and before serving each one he tasted it -- something else I'd never seen in Portugal but that reflects their dedication to quality. Service: we really tried to extend grace and be sensitive to cultural differences, but it's hard to understand sitting for 30-45 minutes without service, or having to ask 2-3 times for water, or the bill, or a menu. This was common, but at da Prata, all three servers were courteous, attentive and professional. They made sure we knew what we were ordering, asked about allergies and preferences, and advised us to start with four dishes for two people. When we had finished, they checked back in to see if we wanted more. (My husband ordered something else, cubed beef in a cumin-scented gravy -- also delicious, though I could only eat one bite.) They accepted our compliments graciously. It's clear they care about their craft. After an amazing experience, we sadly admitted we couldn't handle dessert, but joked that we might be back in a few hours. They told us about some recent customers who had eaten lunch there, then returned for dinner, and a third time for drinks and dessert! I believe it. If we had discovered this place any sooner, we certainly would have visited again. read more

All dishes were very heavy, oily and greasy. We had nap right after. The dishes are over salted and lacked in fish quantity. The fish was fresh but nothing really stood out. The restaurant was empty on a Saturday noon. The service was alright. So overall I am not sure why this place is so hyped. The risotto was to buttery and cheesy. The garlic shrimps in oil was too salty. The cod dish has too much potatoes and missed the quantity of cod. The croquettes were not tasty, we left them on the plate. Fantastic place to get Portuguese tapas! The inside is a bit quirky, but the waiters are super friendly and helpful. The menu is in English and Portuguese. It's a little pricier, but so delicious! I recommend the: Chouriço Assado com Laranja: It's the traditional Portuguese sausage with an orange sauce to pour on top if you'd like. Last week our traveling group of 8 split in two. Four were out wandering and the other 4 of us said we'd meet them at dinner and were thinking of this place, daPrata 52. They didn't respond. We eventually moseyed over there only to find out (15 minutes into our wait) that our friends had actually already picked the same restaurant without telling us! (Seriously small odds that we picked the same exact restaurant in a city filled with different choices). Small world :) I will say the host and one of the servers were not particularly friendly. When we didn't realize our friends had a table, they said the restaurant was full, don't know how long a wait, essentially "you should probably just leave." Another server was MUCH friendlier and eventually we were able to take a table next to our friends once two other women left. The food was awesome! Our friends had already mainly finished their dishes and had plenty to recommend to us. The two different rices were amazing, especially with the beetroot flavor. My husband and uncle in law asked for this spicy sauce for their chicken and were not disappointed - this stuff was on FIRE. They scarfed the sauce down and sweated the entire time (a little dab on my tongue was plenty for me to need a chug of water!) Literally nothing we ordered wasn't awesome - veggies, meats, potatoes, etc. A little on the pricier side compared to some other meals we had in Portugal but well worth it. A local favorite, this traditional tapas restaurant serves small sharing plates (minimum 4 per couple). Seafood tapas will go for about €9 and others are €7 each. The variety makes for different flavors. Service is basic, seating is very casual and tiny chairs would not make adults comfortable to sit on them for long. That seating is what made me drop 1 Star for daPrata. I get the old-timey charm factor but people want to eat comfortably to enjoy the food. Overall a good experience with the food. Located near the praça do comércio in Lisboa we stumbled upon daPrata 52 while site seeing. The line was out the door when we first walked by but luckily when we checked in mid afternoon we were able to get a table and it was so worth the wait. As many restaurants in Portugal do they started us off with a free treat which were the tastiest beef croquets. We shared 4 plates as you have to order 2 plates a person if you want to sit in the back area of the restaurant. We started off with the octopus risotto and fried chicken. Both dishes were on point. The consistency of the risotto was cooked to perfection and the pieces of octopus and seasoning took the dish to another level. The fried chicken was so tender and had that grandmas southern comfort style taste with a delicious mayo sauce to dip it in. Next we had the steak with ham in the daPrata 52 sauce. The broth that the steak came in was so savory almost like one you would find in a stew. The steak itself was excellent cooked medium rare and full of flavor. The sausage croquets were divine so much tastiness packed into each lil bite.
