I am truly saddened that my first review on yelp is something negative.
Darby was once a great school, but unfortunately, this changed after Jennifer Wong took over as principal in late 2023. Her leadership has proven to be unqualified and ineffective, raising serious concerns about how someone with such apparent lack of competence was selected to lead a school.
This sentiment is shared widely by teachers, staff, and parents alike. All of my children have attended Darby, and we have never witnessed such dysfunction and chaos until Mrs. Wong assumed her role. Initially, I gave her the benefit of the doubt as a new principal, but things have only deteriorated. The only reason my children remain at Darby is because of the exceptional teaching staff--credit that cannot be given to Jennifer Wong.
One of the most critical issues is the lack of communication. It is practically nonexistent. Parents are rarely informed about school events unless individual teachers share the information. When approached directly, Mrs. Wong is either unable to provide a straight answer or avoids addressing the matter altogether, showing an alarming lack of awareness regarding the happenings at her own school. She consistently fails to respond to emails, particularly those involving student safety or behavior concerns.
For instance, one of my children was in a class where students displayed disruptive and aggressive behavior, including physical aggression. When I raised this issue, Mrs. Wong refused to meet with me, merely stating that she could not discuss the matter. Meanwhile, the misbehavior continued unchecked. The classroom teacher also expressed frustration, stating that the support previously available from past administrators has been significantly reduced. One staff member, who had been a key source of help, was no longer allowed to assist, and Mrs. Wong had even instructed the teacher not to call the office for help. Teacher support has dwindled further as the majority of teaching assistants have left, and Mrs. Wong has failed to address the shortage by hiring replacements.
Additionally, the overcrowding in lower-grade classrooms is alarming. Kindergarten classes exceed the legal student limit of 27, with one class having 30 students. Second-grade classes also have more than 30 students each. This situation is unfair to both the teachers and students and presents a clear safety hazard.
Speaking of safety, the lack of adequate supervision during recess and lunch is another significant issue. There is insufficient staff to monitor students, and Mrs. Wong rarely steps in to assist. When she does, she is often distracted by her cell phone. This is in stark contrast to the previous principal, who was actively involved in supporting staff, even when fully staffed. It is evident that safety is not a priority under Jennifer Wong's leadership.
Several incidents from last year further illustrate Mrs. Wong's lack of transparency. In one instance, a man in a van harassed students, causing such fear that some children were afraid to attend school. Despite this, parents were left in the dark because staff were not allowed to share details. When a group of parents, including myself, attempted to meet with Mrs. Wong to voice our concerns, she refused to acknowledge us, instructing her office staff to take down our names and contact information instead.
In another incident, a male teaching assistant was found giving his Snapchat account to fifth-grade female students. Despite complaints from multiple families, this individual was allowed to continue working at the school, which is deeply troubling and unacceptable.
Evidence of Mrs. Wong's poor leadership is even seen in the turnover of office staff. The previously warm and supportive office personnel left because they felt mistreated and unsupported under her leadership.
The stories of her mismanagement are numerous. It is a disservice to the entire Darby community that LAUSD deemed Jennifer Wong the best candidate to lead this or any school. Her leadership is an embarrassment and a disgrace. read more
