Having been at the school for three years, and having been a very active member of the schools parent community, I can say with full confidence that it is the complete staff and parent collaboration that makes the school so amazing. Both of my children are thriving in this environment, where the focus is not on technology, but in developing their creative skills in writing, mathematics, music, sports, and above all how to be wonderful humans with their fellow classmates and teachers. We see a dramatic difference from the students around the school in comparison to children who are at the same age group going to public school and for us there's no comparison. This environment allows the students to thrive in ways we only hoped our children would experience. This school is an absolute dream! The campus is stunning and a completely unexpected find in Los Angeles. There are acres of woods, gardens, chickens, and beautiful play areas. The preschoolers help make organic homemade snacks, paint, play, and sing. The teachers genuinely care about the children and are invested in their growth and joy. My 1st grader loves going to school, has plenty of time for organic interaction among peers, loves her teachers, loves learning handwork and getting plenty of art time. My two daughters graduated from HH's high school and middle school this year. My eldest daughter spent 13 years, and my younger daughter spent 8 years growing up in a lush, nature-rich environment, blessed with patient and supportive teachers. Thanks to them, my daughters were able to cultivate inner strength in both mind and body. In particular, we owe a lot to Ms. Andersen, who was my both daughter's homeroom teacher, Mrs. Pinckney, the college counselor, and Ms. Horie, the math teacher. They always had their doors open for us, shared our worries, thought things through with us, and gave us heartfelt advice. When my eldest daughter faced her college application essays, she said it made her deeply reflect on "who she is." Reflecting on her learning at HH helped her find the answer. This fall, my eldest daughter started at Stanford University, something that would have been impossible without their support. our daughter was called retarded by Kathy Anderson in front of other students. All we asked after years in her class was an apology. She back peddled and refused and said she actually said , what you are DOING is retarded. After several meetings with leadership we were threatened that maybe we needed to find a new school if we couldn't sport our teacher. Another mother and I had a conversation about another issue on Facebook. Cara lisco contacted us and told us we have "no right" to say terrible things about Highland Hall. During Covid they lost half their high school teaching staff. There are a lot of schools out there that will take your money and actually educate your child.. skip this one. read more

This is a long review, so I'll sum it up here: Make sure the teacher you are assigned is good or risk the consequences. We invested six years of our lives in this school, from preschool to third grade, and had every intention of staying there through high school, until the school refused to resolve what had become a big problem for half of our class--the teacher. The biggest gamble with a Waldorf school is who your teacher is going to be, since the teacher you get in the first grade theoretically stays with your child through the eighth grade. This has some advantages in that the bond between your child and the teacher becomes much stronger. But it also depends on somebody who can teach eight different grades, as well as the ability of your school's administration to choose good people. If you get a great teacher who is capable of guiding your child for eight years, no problem. If you don't, you have a big problem. We loved our teachers in pre-K and Kindergarten, and continued to love all of the ancilliary teachers for foreign language, arts, and dance. But the teacher we were assigned in first grade was new to Waldorf and neither ready or able to do the job. She often used a bare minimum of the resources required to make projects. She made strange threats to the class that were more harmful than helpful. She created competitions between members of the class that were not in keeping with the Waldorf philosophy. We expressed our concerns about these things and she seemed to understand what we were talking about and pledged to stop doing them, but she didn't. When we started to compare notes with other parents, we found out she had speaking badly about our children to others. (She had told us earlier that another child had been a problem and it turned out she had told that child's parents that our child had been a problem; then a new family was told all of our children were a problem, which helped explain why they had been so aloof for the first half of the year.) We tried, we really did: Two years of this and we kept telling ourselves, "She's new," "She's overwhelmed," "If we're patient and helpful maybe she'll come around." She didn't. This sentiment was shared by many of the parents in our class, and when the school hired a new pedagogical chair we made our case to him and he agreed there was definitely a problem. He tried to address it directly with the teacher, tried to have us all sit down and express our concerns, tried everything he could to fix it, all to no avail. Less than half way into the third grade, almost half of the parents (I think we had 10 kids in the class total) had had enough. During a monthly meeting the pedagogical chair came and addressed his and our concerns. After that meeting we reached out to the teacher to ask her to respond and/or address some of the concerns and she refused, then the school told the parents that any further communications with her should go through them. Let me repeat that: WE WERE TOLD THAT WE SHOULD NO LONGER TO COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY WITH OUR CHILD'S TEACHER. Obviously, that's not a tenable situation. Four of the kids in our class (including us) decided to leave. Immediately. At least one more decided to stick it out for the year and then left. The pedagogical chair, who I believe had moved with his wife from Philadelphia to take this multi-year contract job, was fired. And that was that. The aftermath was just sad. We were nothing but supportive of this school for six years, through every carnival, every fundraiser, everything you can think of. We presented a solid case of problems backed by an administrator and they chose the teacher over us. When the fact that half of her class had suddenly left rippled through the school, one of the families that remained spread a rumor that we were racist. As if four families who had stuck it out with this person for 2 1/2 years suddenly decided one day that they didn't like the color of her skin. I've thought about writing this review many times since we left Highland Hall. I'm writing it now because I heard that when this incident recently came up with a prospective new family, the school told them they just had a bunch of difficult parents that year. (Folks, if somebody tells you half a class walked out right in the middle of the school year because the parents were being difficult, I'd double-down on vetting that teacher.) Now we've heard that the teacher in question has not been asked to return to the school. Had they only made that decision years ago when we presented them with a list of serious concerns and a mountain of examples we might still be there, although I'm not sure how much I could have trusted the administration after that. In short: if you're going to go to a school like this, make 100% sure you have faith in your teacher and the competence of your administration. I'm hoping this review will keep some people from having to learn this the hard way. read more

Our two children attended Highland Hall between 1997 and 2010. It was an invaluable experience for them and our whole family. The holistic approach to educating the whole child and the community of students, teachers, staff and families nourished us all as human beings. The pedagogy helped make our children critical thinkers able to appreciate and advocate for beauty, love and justice in the world. And both did extremely well in college and went on to successful careers. We just started our son at this school, having transferred from a public school in West LA in the middle of 5th grade. He was doing well academically at his old school, but it was pure memorization and tons of homework, little creativity, and boredom all the time. We weren't fans of the core curriculum. When I found out about this little under-the-radar gem of a school, I thought I was dreaming. We set up a visit for our son to spend three days there, and by then, the whole family was hooked. Eleven beautiful acres for the children to feel away from the city. Wonderful, dedicated, responsive teachers. A strong music program, two foreign languages. A real arts curriculum along with the usual math, science, history, English fare. They learn how to learn and why it matters - all in a small, extremely caring community. I was never a Waldorf mom before this, but now I'm hooked. Or at the least, I'm hooked on Highland Hall and their methods. I attended Highland Hall from preschool until my senior year (during 1st grade I had to attend public school which really illuminated the differences between schools). Highland Hall is really a unique place that offers an education that focuses on the whole child, encourages artistic expression, and learning from different prospectives. I was very happy when I was able to return and could be in a supportive environment with talented teachers. During my time at Highland Hall I played sports, learned banjo, ignited my passion for woodworking, worked in the biodynamic garden, and developed my skills as an artist. I was given tools and knowledge that I use in my everyday life and seeing what my classmates and I have done after graduating really proves how effective Highland Hall is. Fellow alumni have continued on to be wonderful (and successful) architects, scientists, designers, music producers, and entrepreneurs, and I know they would all say that Highland Hall gave them the foundation and skills to achieve their goals. Recently my friend took the parent and child program and absolutely loved it! I've also had the pleasure of talking with current students who are not only well read, but are incredibly self aware and have a variety of hobbies and interests. There are some good teachers there and there are some terrible teachers there. Since in the Waldorf system a teacher stays with their class for eight years from first grade to eighth grade you better hope you get one of the good teachers. When we were there one daughter had a great experience the other did not like her teacher and her teacher did not like her. Add in the total lack of organization and a poorly run administration. My first grader started at Highland Hall last year as a kindergartner and I immediately knew we not only found a very special school but also a loving community - a precious find in Los Angeles. The Highland Hall families are as special as the faculty. I drop my son off at school every day knowing he learns from teachers who nurture his emotional development in addition to furthering his education. There is no pressure of standardized testing, and the students get the opportunity to learn foreign languages, art, music, and even biodynamic gardening (all taught by specialty teachers). My two sons attend this school. The care my 3 year old receives in the beautiful early childhood center are beyond what you can find anywhere else. The teachers are trained to optimize a positive social experience, and create a warm and safe environment that really meets the needs of the young child. No bright lights or garish colors, handmade and natural toys, healthy warm food every day, and plenty of opportunity for deeply creative play indoors and out. What a beautiful and nurturing place to go to school... I attended Highland Hall for ten years, during which time I learned everything you could possibly need to know to be a happy and whole individual for life. I look back upon my time there with love and a deep appreciation for all of the incredible teachers who taught me not only how to read, write, knit, and do math, but also how to believe in myself. I am forever grateful for my parents for sending me to such a magical place of self-development and self-discovery. Your child will be incredibly fortunate if he or she ever has the chance of attending Highland Hall. Now that I am twenty-one and living life on my own, I have found that I remember more of the skills and materials that I learned during my time at Highland Hall than I did at my college prep high school. Be very careful about choosing this school. We were here for a year and it was a disaster. Maybe this school was once amazing, and there are certainly still good teachers and lovely students and parents, but many of the teachers have serious issues. The training here is weak, and they really don't seem to know what they're doing. Most teachers only have Waldorf training and no teaching degrees. Also, there is no principal and no boss of the teachers except for the board of the school, so if you have an issue, there's nowhere to turn. In my one year here, I've never been more shocked by the low level of classroom management and weak teaching. Three of kids' teachers were fired. A Spanish teacher was taping kids' mouths shut. A eurythmy teacher was slamming into kids and called a teacher a 'retard' in front of kids, and frequently called my older daughter big and awkward. Another teacher was fired for saying inappropriate things to the students about other students and their parents. And I found out they just hired a teacher that was fired from another school. This school can't get good teachers because they don't pay well enough. All the other Waldorf schools in LA pay more, so go to one of the other Waldorf schools. Ask them about this when you visit. Another note about any minor special needs, if your kid has sensory issues or is anxious at all, don't bring them here thinking it's more peaceful. The garden is peaceful. But in those classrooms, the teachers don't have any idea how to make a classroom fun, creative and peaceful. Don't believe this review though. Look at the class sizes. They're tiny because the main teachers are so ineffective and kids have left in droves. Also, go to a Christmas performance. Look at the kids' faces. Very little smiling. This is strange compared to other schools. Look for joy. For the high school, ask what colleges the graduating class went to. Ask all the questions! The other reviews here look good, yes, but I know some of them are by former and current teachers at the school, or people who are otherwise affiliated, and not just as parents. Especially be careful of grades 1-8. Look at the class size. If it's over 15, the main teacher is probably good. Under 10, beware. The preschool and kindergarten is good. Really follow your intuition with this school and ask the teacher lots of questions, how she would teach certain skills for instance or deal with certain behavior issues. Ask about how much they'll communicate with you as a parent if something's going wrong. In our case, there was zero communication all year. At this school, it's very much the teachers against the parents because there's no boss and so the communication can be weak. We've gone to another school that has full classes and qualified teachers. I suggest you do the same. read more

Sending our two sons to Highland Hall (Classes of 2005 and 2009) was the most important and impactful decision we ever made in their lives, and one we NEVER regretted. What a rich, full, expansive education they received. They loved it and are still very close to the other students they went to school with. They loved it as little boys and as high schoolers. They both went Pre.K-Senior year. They not only learned all the academics, several musical instruments, organic gardening, art, and two languages including Spanish (one son is fluent now), they learned how to THINK. Waldorf-educated children are some of the kindest, most compassionate, artistic, and focused people I know. If you ever want to know if Waldorf education "works', just look at its graduates.They are beautiful people. My sons graduated in 2005 and 2009 and their classmates were accepted to Julliard (Two in one class went to Julliard on scholarships including one that was 4-year scholarship!), UC schools, Oberlin and small private colleges. We are in touch with most of their classmates still, and they are not only successful in their chosen fields, they are good people making a difference in the world and that matters even more! read more

In my 30s now. Went to Highland Hall from 3rd -12th grade. Before this I had trouble in school. I think I was diagnosed with ADHD before I went but my parents didn't want to medicate at the time. If you have a kid going here and they have any kind of issues, this isn't the right school for them. At least when I went there were no text books, were no notes to give out, you basically had to do it all yourself. This led to year after year of parent/teacher talks, many many many years of hating school, and frankly never getting anything done in that time. No career, nothing to show for the 100,000 that probably went into sending me here. They did nothing for me at all since I was there. Only talks and more talks about how I didn't finish my work or didn't study at all for tests. NOTHING FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION! There was one time where a German/Clay/whatever else they want them to be a teacher for assaulted me in class and shoved clay down my throat. Thank you highland hall for giving me zero for in life......I blame allot of what has happened later on in life on them, because I needed help when I was younger and they had nothing at all to give me! I wish I would have been taken out of that school and didn't graduate. But I was too young and after going there for a while I just couldn't image myself at any NORMAL public school... those kids that did leave and went somewhere else always seemed to have this better life after coming back. So yes send your kid here if you want, but be warned it's not all fun and games for the kids with issues. I would have given it a one star but I liked the campus back then. Haven't been to any class reunions and haven't been back since I graduated....I can't stand that place. read more

I will start by saying I have raised 4 kids and they have always been at different schools. HH was the 4th child's school from 9th - 12th If I knew what I knew about children when I had the first one, I would of put all of them through this education. Also it should be noted that no school is perfect, there will always be something that bothers you about any school. We had a very positive experience at HH. Here it is...... Our only daughter didn't want to go, and as she went through 9th grade, she proceeded to be held accountable for the type of person she was, and what she could contribute to the class, more than what grade she got. School work is important, don't get me wrong, they make their own beautiful text books & are expected to do well, but it is more about helping a well rounded person blossom. For the first 6 months she hated it. THEN she turned a corner and got what they were doing. She went from a shy, introverted, young lady to a walking talking ad for Waldorf education. She blossomed almost overnight and hasn't stopped. The way they teach and treat each child with love and respect is remarkable. We are huge fans and if you are looking at starting your child on this remarkable journey, I ask you to keep the faith, don't give into other parents telling you all the things their child is doing at other schools, know your family is on a different journey & when they leave in 12th grade you will know it has all been as it should. I have been a parent at this school for the past 5 years. I have two children (ages 4 and 6 years old) in the nursery and 1st grade. The atmosphere in the Early Childhood Center (ages 2 1/2 years old until 6 years old--Nursery - Kindergarten) is peaceful, loving, and joyful. My children are listened to and cared for with deep respect and understanding. Another plus about the school's Early Childhood Center is the children get to help prepare the snacks in the classroom! If one is seeking a true Waldord education, I would not recommend Highland Hall in a good faith. It is so sad, such a beautiful grounds and some amazing specialty teachers. However, there is something really wrong with the faculty and it sets the tone of the school and projects on a very idea of Waldord education quiet negative. The " best interest of a child " has not been addressed on a daily basis. This school year due to an incompetent and harmful to children 3d grade teacher, 3 families had no other option, but remove their children from the school mid year( January2017) Our daughter came to school loving learning and left with complete opposite feeling and low self esteem. She is thriving now and happy in a different school. Always smiling. We eventually had to pull our son from HH as well. It was not easy for me to write that review, I invested allot in that school and made some wonderful friendships, but I felt obligated to warn other families, that maybe have other choices, to look at HH very closely and perhaps avoid emotional and financial damage, that our family had to endure. read more

We have loved every single day that we've been at Highland Hall! Our son literally skips on the way to his classroom in the morning and can't stand to miss a day of school. My 3-year old son is thriving in the pre-kindergarten program. His teachers have excellent formal training and long experience. They tailor schooling to his stage of development, which at this point emphasizes play and warmth over formal instruction. Highland Hall is a beautiful campus with lots of natural outdoor space for him to explore and plenty of time to do so. His inside time is in a calm environment that feels like a home, but is full of deceptively simple toys to explore. He chops vegetables to makes soup, learns to watercolor with beautiful big brush strokes, and this week dyed a yellow cape with plants from the school's dye garden for a school festival. I love that he learns by exploring, creating, and imagining. After all, childhood lasts such a short while. It should be magical. We live in Sherman Oaks, and the commute to Northridge is surprisingly easy on the 405. read more

I can't thank Highland Hall enough for 13+ years of the well rounded artistic, academic, and athletic education I received in the 80s and 90s through 2002, and that my children are receiving now. We have 3 children and 2 grandchildren at Highland Hall and despite their different learning styles, interests and personalities, each of them are fulfilled and happy here. Being a Waldorf school, each of the children is held and seen by not just their teacher but each faculty member. At the parent teacher conferences the teachers don't just talk about their grades, but about our child as a whole human being, from their social situation and their emotional health to their classroom participation and school work. We really appreciate the electives in the high school and the emphasis on music and art in throughout the whole school. Art and movement and music are intrigal to each of our children's day, and their learning is that much deeper and broader because of the many different ways they express their knowledge. Highland Hall is a school like no other! It's a very special place where the teachers and staff truly care for each child as an individual. The method of teaching is extremely engaging and specific to every age while academic standards are very high. My daughter has learned so much! She is in 8th grade and not only has she had blocks in physics and organic chemistry, but she plays flute in an amazing school orchestra, can speak a little German and Spanish, and knows how to make a stool from her wood working class! Plus she made beautiful geometric drawings in 5th grade and learned how to knit her own socks. Best of all, these accomplishments have contributed greatly to her self confidence and belief in her ability to be successful. Everyday she discovers who she is and what's true in her heart. We have been HH parents for over 12 years. We have two daughters that have had the joy of being both students of the Waldorf curriculum and more importantly part of the strong community/family at HH. I personally went to a very prestigious all girls school in Los Angeles and I am fully aware of the enormous stress that I endured at school and I didn't want that for my children. I want them to be able to learn not be overwhelmed by the rat race. If my daughter wants to be a doctor, and is already stressed out by school in the third grade, how are they going to make it through medical school? The beauty of both HH and Waldorf education is that the education meets the child where they are developmentally. Allowing a child to be a child while still stressing academics and not ignoring the arts, music, and so many other vital things that make a well rounded human that can think out of the box.
