What an awesome place to have in South Boston! Darbys has easily become one of my favorite places to eat for many reasons. First and foremost, the food is always delicious. You have a great selection ranging from bar bites to elegant dishes. Their drinks are always great and include some of the best bourbon and whiskey selections, along with bartenders who truly know how to make a drink that kicks. I've been here with my husband as well as with my family and it's really a great spot for both. I am so glad a place like this is just 20 minutes from home and consistently great. If you haven't been to Darbys yet, you need to check it out! As a newcomer to the area, I can appreciate its history and the absolutely stunning grounds of Berry Hill that it's located on. Had one of the worst dining experiences of my life last night with the rudest, most unprofessional bartender I've ever encountered, Melanie. She was incredibly belligerent even after I apologized and admitted my mistake by taking a dish that I assumed was mine. The rest of my party had been served and was almost done while I'd waited quite a while for just a simple appetizer that seemed to be sitting in front of me on a tray, getting cold. I said I was sorry, but she continued to loudly berate me for my mistake. I had heard the service had really gone downhill, but that was completely unacceptable. Also, I wouldn't want my food sitting out on a table in a bar with people just walking around it. Gross. The night was ruined, yet I made a point of tipping over 20% because other people were working and not being hateful. Hope they don't split tips. read more

Love the Tavern! Their Salmon BLT is delicious, especially the bread it's served on. I also love the Berry Salad, with the grilled Salmon and the maple balsamic dressing!! We were in the area and looking for a good place for lunch and as always Yelp did not let me down. Upon arriving we thought we put in the wrong address to GPS as it is located on an absolutely gorgeous estate - it's called Berry Hill Resort. It was in the middle of the afternoon - and there was a large function happening at the resort but they were very welcoming upon arrival. Excellent food! You can smell the flavor coming from the kitchen as you're walking from the parking area. The bang bang shrimp were tasty & nicely cooked. The Mediterranean wrap was packed with veggies & goat cheese. For dinner that night, we went back and ordered shrimp & grits. The plate was filled with hominy grits and shrimp with a gravy. Considering how few nearby restaurants were open during our two night Berry Hill Resort stay (two days before a Wednesday Christmas), this little pub/grill was a lifesaver. They have a simple menu offering mainly sandwiches, which was okay with us. We opted for a couple of burgers made with grass-fed beef. The patties were huge (but a wee bit overcooked) and the buns were a little stale. My wife's side salad however was fresh and plentiful. They were a little stingy with my fries but what I did have were tasty. Service was warm and friendly, but was somewhat unattentive during the second half of our meal. On two occasions we had to walk to the bar to retrieve our own soda refills. The atmosphere is simple and cozy. You enter into one of their three small train-like dining areas each seating about 12. The back room has a billiards table. The bar is located in the first room. Windows are scarce. Overall, everything was just okay at best, but again, we were just thankful that it was open. It was better than the other alternatives available to us: McDonald's, Hardee's or Wal-Mart, all of which were 10 miles away. read more

She left dirty glasses and dishes on the table, loNG after they were needed. Once you are here then they have you captive. Meet old tavern atmosphere. I would not say "don't come" because you could get a better server. Give it a try! 2nd chance, I went here again tonight and my server was Kristen, her service was exceptional and the food as always was outstanding. I am upgrading my rating to a 5-Star! I have been coming to Berry Hill for about 5 years. As time goes by this Resort and Restaurant is becoming run down and not up to any standards you think you would find in a Restaurant Hotel. On first glance 12/29/24, this restaurant as well as the whole hotel, had very little decorations for the Holiday Season. A big letdown for a hotel. Then as we sat in the Tavern I could see how dingy and dirty it had become. The bar, well it should be torn out and remodeled, was a disgrace. So dirty, the service was ridiculous. One bartender! During the Holidays? Plus she had to wait tables and bus and Serve and the bar was packed. We waited very long while at the next table one women never got her food while the rest of her friends, who waited forever to get their food, had already finished. So she just had it boxed. The whole place was a mess. I still am surprised at the condition and the lack of spirit. It is complete apathy. Looks like depression. All this didn't do much for the mood of the waitress. I'm not spending for expensive dinners in this dive until some repairs and cleaning change the hotel's appearance. And, staff starts to act like hotel staff are suppose to act. read more

June 17, 2018 UPDATE Returned on Fathers Day! Inconsistent food. This time the chicken and waffle was prepared and served in a puddle of syrup, potatoes included. No maple bacon butter. Inedible rubbery bacon bits. Last time I had this the syrup was not poured all over the dish and no I don't like syrup drenched potatoes. They are out of lemonade. Don't ask for it. It's on the menu but they don't have it! Today which was for a special occasion was definitely an off day. Had brunch here and would highly recommend the weekend brunch because there are not many breakfast places that are worthwhile in town and this one serves up excellent table service and some good eats. We ordered several items to test and share. The French toast(so good and equally unique flavors. we ended up ordering a second one! Topped with fresh whipped cream. shrimp and grits( good flavor but the grits were a bit too heavy and lumpy in this dish for me). I would order again though just because everything else about the dish was great! Chicken and waffles - I was pleasantly impressed! The chicken is the star here Philly omelette- a bit greasy. Not a favorite of the food here. They walk the food over from the main kitchen in another building giving you a feel of the "old way" things may have been done. My only gripe is make sure they prepare your order as described on the menu. Our French toast had no whipped cream. When we mentioned it, they sent for it but we had pretty much finished the dish because the staff had to make it fresh. We ordered another one so we used the fresh cream for that one. I enjoy going to Darby's Tavern to have a few drinks and to play pool, but I have to leave such a poor rating because of the situation. The day after I visited Darby's, when my bill had been processed through to my card statement, there was more added on to the tip than what I left. I'm in food service, so I know sometimes mistakes happen... This wasn't a mistake. Just be mindful of your credit card statements and keep your receipts if you visit. read more

Service was very good. There were 2 servers, and they were very attentive. We started with an appetizer of hush puppies, which had bacon, green onion and cheese, served with a remoulade sauce. We enjoyed it, not a must have dish, but it was good. I had shrimp & grits, and thought it tasted good. My wife was a little disappointed with the bbq bacon wrapped pork chops she ordered. Bacon was not fully cooked, and bbq sauce covered the chops and the cheddar mashed potatoes. You couldn't tell if there was cheese in the potatoes, because of all the bbq sauce. Chops needed some seasoning, or wood smoke grill flavor would have improved this dish. read more

Wowzer! This place is just amazing. My only negative is that it's easy to miss the entrance, because the sign doesn't really stand out AT ALL. The driveway is shaded due to trees placed and I absolutely loved that. Signs are placed and easy to follow. Parking is easy. Everything here is beautiful. I'd actually love to come stay at the resort sometime. I wasnt sure if we needed a reservation. We showed up and were able to sit down with no reservation and no issues. I got to try a really delicious ale on tap, which in hindsight I wish I'd asked the name of. The food came out quickly and boy, was I impressed. This restaurant has the best food my daughter and I have ever eaten. I'm actually shocked. She ordered a burger and I got the salmon blt. I know, salmon blt sounds a bit different, but I can not get over how incredible that sandwich was. Literally THE BEST sandwich I've tasted in my lifetime. My daughter orders burgers everywhere we go, but she usually only takes one or two bites and then complains. She said her burger was even better than McDonald's lol. Im not from around these parts so I was exploring the area. I looked up a place to eat on yelp, and I ended up walking around an old plantation that's a resort now. I ordered a salad and then I tried my husbands loaded tots. Wow! These are really good! I will order extra ranch next time when we get them. The pulled pork on top the tots was delicious! My husband had the cheeseburger with Gouda cheese. The burger was cooked and seasoned perfectly and was a healthy portion. I don't think you can go wrong with much on their menu. I suspect the same food is served for room arrive at the Inn. We had a Spa Day and here and the tavern was a nice end to the day. We will definitely return and next time we will opt to site outside at the tavern. The grounds were beautiful and everything was green and the spring ephemera was breathtaking. I wish all the buildings had been preserved and not sided with vinyl. It loses some of the historical value and esthetic appeal when buildings go modern. This is an old plantation turned into primarily a wedding and event space but the tavern was open to the public. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and everything overall was great. My only complaint is that the asparagus was over cooked. read more

This was our first restaurant dine in experience in over a year. The service was friendly and quick. The Tavern is in a restored building from an 18th century estate. Cool location and the food was excellent. Remember I am relating it based on the type of restaurant. Fine dining is also available on property, but this is a Tavern. The bar is nice and there are multiple dining areas. There are only three beers on tap, but the IPA I had was tasty. We both got the pulled pork sandwich. The pork was well cooked, well pulled - a nice blend of small and medium pieces. The sauce was nice and let the pork shine through. I have eaten lots of BBQ across the country and this pulled pork reminds me of some of the best I have had in Kansas City. We will definitely go back and I highly recommend it. read more

We were the only ones there at the time and sat at the bar. They have decent beer and liquor options and a good mix of food options. I opted for the shrimp and grits and thought it was a pretty tasty meal. After dinner we went on a tour of the mansion to work off the food we had. A serendipitous job interview for my hubby brought us to Berry Hill two years and five days after we were married there! (Good thing, too, since Mister had planned :nothing: for our anniversary...) Anyhow, one of the fun re-visits we got to make was a meal on-site at Darby's. The Tavern is where you can grab lunch during the day, a casual dinner, or hit the bar. This venue is one of the only South Boston places open for a meal on Sundays, so it was very crowded with regulars this evening. We nabbed the last table, which is in the furthest room from the bar. Because of the old-era fireplace, it's really drafty. But the bartender, Travis -- doubling as the server -- did a phenomenal job tracking back to our corner and making sure we had everything we needed. So glad I checked the reviews here because I noticed Michael W's tip that Sundays are BOGO apps. We got the recommended chicken quesadilla as well as the chili cheese fries. Both were tasty, but there could be some improvement. The quesadilla was packed with chicken, but had a tomato-y (almost Italian-like) sauce instead of a thick salsa or pico de gallo. The homemade chili on the cheese fries was a little tangy and packed some heat. I really liked it. But the cheese was already hardened onto the fries, rather than gooey and melted. I'd gotten a burger on one of my previous visits; but this time I tried the pesto chicken sandwich. This was my least favorite of what we feasted on tonight. The bread is wonderful. And the sandwich was plump. But without aioli or maybe some lemon zest, it was dry and quite bland. The homemade chips are perfect though. And I managed to clean off my rather large serving of 'em. Also nice to see that Fat Tire has been added to their beer list (where was that when I got married?!), rounding out an otherwise underwhelming group including Sam Adams and Corona. read more

I stayed one night at the Berry Hill Resort and ate at Darby's Tavern for dinner on my arrival and lunch before I left the next day. For dinner I had the Blackened Catfish "prepared with cajun spices atop roasted corn and pepper rice and crème fraiche" with house-made salsa. It was fantastic. The catfish was perfect - not over or under cooked. The cajun spices made themselves known, and the rice and creme fraiche helped level it out so that it wasn't overly spicy. It may seem pricey at $17, but you get plenty on your plate, and the quality makes it well worth it. HINT: If they are offering the lemon cake with berries, order it! Out of this world! For lunch I had the Crab Cake Sandwich which was "pan seared lump crabcake with cole slaw, tomato and remoulade." I'm typically not a huge fan of crab cakes, but this was tasty even to me (not overly fishy). The crab cake was so hefty that I didn't even eat the bun! P.S. the sweet potato fries are homemade on-site! Lastly, the service was top notch. They were swamped at dinner time. The place was nearly full and two tables of 11 each showed up without a reservation. The servers, bartenders, and bussers hustled without missing a beat and all with smiles. Katina was our server, the bartender, and I assume the manager. She was the life of Darby's Tavern. Chatted with us first-timers and knew all the repeat customers as well. She made sure everyone who came through the door enjoyed their meal and their visit. I can't say enough about Darby's Tavern! read more

Everything about my visit was great. Appetizers were delicious, our entrees and salads were impeccable. Make sure you try the Tavern Tots! We sat nestled in between the bar and another dining room with football on tv and a pool table that entertained my son until the food arrived. Renting a hotel space here and stopped by after a stressful day. Darby's Tavern is a fun space with nice beer/cocktail selections with a great pub menu. The catfish sandwich hit the spot paired with a refreshing Oktoberfest beer. I didn't know Darby's existed until I called to make a reservation at Carrington's and was told that they were closed but that Darby's was open. Turns out Darby's is open any night, and that's a rarity around these parts. Darby's opens to a courtyard on either side, and one of these has tables for outdoor dining. The interior consists of three small rooms; the barroom and two dining rooms. I haven't asked about the history of the space, but it feels like it could have been one of the kitchens of Berry Hill back in the 18th Century, since there's a fireplace large enough to cook in. Each time I've been there the place has been efficiently run by the friendly and unflappable Joyce. The menu has a good variety but the ribeye steak was so good the first time that I haven't strayed from that choice on subsequent visits. read more
