Though in general, it won't cost you anything to have a real estate agent as a buyer, are they still worthwhile? Damn straight they are, and Darcie Alexander of the PDX Green Team is a great example. Especially when coming from out of the area, it is key to have someone who is honest about the market, honest about the pluses and minuses of various neighborhoods, and who provides an honest critical assessment of a given property. I get that some people are less interested in the last item, but I think having an independent view can break the "tunnel vision" that can occur when shopping and is very important for the most expensive purchase one can make. I found Darcie through Yelp and of all the fab places I've found through Yelp, Darcie might win all time. I'll try to be short, but if you are looking to sell your house (my experience w/ Darcie), you are an idiot if you don't go with Darcie. I'm assuming the same is true if you are buying a house. I am really high maintenance. I have no idea how to do anything house related - and I don't want to. I'm an out of state owner who finally figured out I'm not moving back to PDX anytime soon (which sucks) so I decided to sell. I travel all the time for work - so it's hard for me to be available and I can never find a freaking fax machine. So basically, I have four strikes against me. Darcie made the entire experience so damn easy I can't believe my house sold...after 2 days on the market (with backup offer, natch). She took care of every possible thing, moved things along, nudged me when I needed it and, to steal a line from a prior review, ROCKS. I have no idea how I would have done this without the babysitting of Darcie. Also, she's exceptionally honest and fights for you. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that are great, but Darcie made my experience perfect - and selling a house is crazy and a bit emotional. And it is scary. I'm in advertising so anything that involves a pest report is a foreign language. I figure you can't ask for much more than that. We (my son, daughter-in-law, and myself, shopping from another state) had an excellent experience with Hilary and Darcie. We were trying to buy a home in the early months of 2015, at a time when the market was swinging sharply upwards, and our search was complicated by the fact that we had a fairly rigid (and lowish) price ceiling. Also, I was shopping from 500 miles away, and had only bought one home before, 27 years ago! So we needed all the help we could get. Because the market was so difficult, we all learned together. We made offers on 7 homes over 6 or 7 months before our bid was the winning one, tweaking our strategy a bit with each new offer. But Hilary and Darcie hung in there with us even when we almost gave up, and did a huge amount of legwork for each and every offer. Once our offer was accepted, they were amazing at organizing all of the inspections and the appraisal, especially given the fact that I had to fly in for these and they all needed to be done in one day, AND we had 10 days to schedule everything, including my flights. They helped us hugely with the process of renegotiating after the inspections were done, and never stopped until after we closed. The day we took possession Hilary met us at the house with a bottle of champagne and glasses, which seemed ever so appropriate. I'm writing this review from my new home! I wouldn't have this amazing house if it weren't for Darcie. My husband and I looked for a home for over a year. Then we met Darcie. Within one month we found our dream home. (Complete with recording studio, garden/fire pit, and hardwood floors!) To sum it up: they delivered. We relocated from out of state so the entire transaction was pretty much done remotely. Darcie worked with us over the phone and email and helped design a whirlwind day of home tours where my wife flew in to town and looked at a bunch of houses until we found one that worked for our needs. They took videos of the house we ended up purchasing so I could take a look since I had to stay where I was. A word to the wise: trust Yelp! We started our house hunt with a real estate agent we met during an open house. Wrong move. After feeling bullied and pressured, we then turned to Yelp and found Darcie and her business partner, Hilary, who are everything you could possibly want in real estate agents -- great communicators, honest individuals, and true professionals. When we went to look at some houses with Darcie, she was upfront about the state of the homes. We looked at some pretty sketchy places, and she didn't hesitate to shepherd us back out the door and on to the next place. After all those dodgy houses, both she, my boyfriend, and I got really excited when we found The One. And that's probably the biggest thing -- we really felt like Darcie and Hilary were rooting for us the whole time. Darcie and Hilary had to smooth over a lot of bumps caused by other individuals we worked with throughout our home buying process. They worked their magic and at the same time soothed our bewildered souls by handling everything efficiently up until the very last second (and beyond). My wife and I have purchased two houses in Portland over the past 5 years and we cannot thank them enough for the support and guidance they've given us - and believe me, we haven't been the easiest people to work with due to crazy schedules (which Hil & Darcie accommodated graciously) and a long list of criteria for the right house. Finding the second house took way longer than we expected and included bids on 7 or 8 houses, getting a house but walking away after the inspection, taking long breaks in the search for various reasons - yet Hilary and Darcie never let us lose hope, never pressured us, and were never put off when we'd randomly ask them to see a house the next day. They're not afraid to point out potential concerns to you, either. They made sure we were aware of all of our options at each step in the purchase process, and also knew how we could best protect ourselves as we were progressing through the home buying stages. Another great thing they bring to the table is a good relationship with several local contractors whom they can ask to estimate how much a particular repair might cost, if you'd like. Love love loved working with Darcie and Hilary. It took us many months and 4 offers before we got our first home, and there is no way we would have survived this without them. I completely understand why people quit even in the last days of closing. This is totally stressful experience, and Darcie was there with us every step of the way. As a first-time-homebuyer, Darcie was a wonderful partner in sorting out the long list of tumultuous details that come with preparing paperwork, and getting things scheduled. That's not to say that she's formulaic: she's fun, talkative, and empathetic. I think she was very careful to let me make decisions on my own. She never pressured me to buy anything -- which was nice. She would, however, on occasion gently try to steer me clear of problem houses or situations.
