Response times were incredibly slow, and fees were expensive compared to other CPAs I've worked with in the past. I can't edit my previous review. I am only removing my statement about how I feel about the "scam" part of this review due to their contacting me and asking to remove it. HOWEVER, the whole operation still feels like riding a roller-coaster without the front track wheels. Terrible communication, terrible service, statements about personal life on the CPAs part, even more personal stabs at clients as well as the belittling of clients, and, finally, trying to loop in others into emails on one on one matters. After the disengagement, there were still emails I was receiving about my review and how I was incorrect instead of professionally disengaging and letting the matter be. Got in contact with them and initially everything seemed nice. We scheduled a zoom interview, which they missed the first of, okay, that can happen, but then we connected during the second zoom date and it went really well. The CPA was so positive and supportive, really excited to have us on board. So were we. And then... we email with a question: no response. We give it some time and resend: no response. Wait some more, resend: get a short reply they'll be getting back to us tomorrow. We wait another 2 weeks, resend: no response. Wash, rinse, repeat. We get in contact with the supervisor to see what's going on (maybe the CPA is out of the office), and same game, no communication. Wow. I think this is the first time I've been ghosted by a professional company. It seemed so legit, and now just scammy. Maybe we dodged a bullet. read more

Our tax "professional" went MIA mid-prep in 2023 and stopped responding to any of our correspondence when we got close to filing. This was after months of painstakingly working with this individual to get any clear answers and direction. We had to reach out to other individuals at Dark Horse just to get a response. Taxes were finally submitted on time, but it was incredibly frustrating and time consuming to have to hunt down responses and keep revisiting a project that should take one day to complete. In addition to this, they recently informed me that 2024 prep costs would be going up 100% vs prior year. 100%?? What a joke. Save your money and go elsewhere...anywhere else. read more

Inefficient and rude - this firm's accounting errors will cost you money and patience!

So I was looking for new tax person this year and with Covid-19 things were a bit tricky. I found Jordan w/Dark Horse CPAs through Yelp. I decided to give them a try based on their local reviews and I was not disappointed to say the least. Jordan's initial call w/me impressed me with his vast knowledge and experience regarding finances and taxes. However I will be honest we did everything remotely and I was hesitant because it was regarding all of my business financial documentation. He was extremely professional, took the time to walk me through the entire process and included a Zoom video demonstrating a step by step tutorial. He found the best solution for my business and also reviewed my taxes from the year prior and was able to get me a sizable return in the end. I highly recommend using him for your business taxes! read more

I also don't know how they have all 5 star reviews. I had dealt with them for 2 years with a mediocre feeling about them. Then this past year I was way behind due to settling my mothers estate. My tax guy (Erik) said "no problem, I'll file an extension and get to it when I can.", so I sent him my info late March. 2 months go by, I message him through their client portal and get a vague "under review" response. another month goes by. I email him 'What's up? How are my taxes coming along? Did you file my extension?" He responded that it looked like he had everything he needed and would get to it in the next couple of weeks. That was 3 weeks ago, so I started getting nervous and started doing some work on my own. I looked online at IRS and discovered that they have no record of an extension being filed, and I discovered that I had neglected to send him P&L of mine and my wife's self employment, which, if he had EVER looked at our files he would have noticed and contacted me. I am currently looking for a new tax service to bail me out, but this guy has probably cost me a thousands of dollars. read more

I worked with Max and Chase for the first time over the 2017 tax season. I used TurboTax for the past six years, but I decided to seek out a CPA to help me review my previous returns and file a return for this year. A coworker recommended Chase and Max, and I reached out through their online form. Chase responded almost immediately, and we started to discuss what needed to be done. I was impressed with the enthusiasm and efficiency they displayed. Long story short, they reviewed my past three years of returns and found $500 in additional refunds I missed out on, and they helped file amended tax returns to recoup these savings. They also helped file this year's taxes, a financial disclosure for my international holdings (FBAR), and provided a neat projection for the 2018 tax year to understand how the recent tax reforms will impact my filing. I stopped by their office to sign some paperwork, and spoke at length with Max about a variety of questions I'd always had, and he answered them effortlessly. The returns were filed on time, and I would get immediate responses on any questions I had, or would get feedback on any of the forms or documentation I sent over. Usually, I dread filing my taxes.
