I worked with Max and Chase for the first time over the 2017 tax season. I used TurboTax for the past six years, but I decided to seek out a CPA to help me review my previous returns and file a return for this year. A coworker recommended Chase and Max, and I reached out through their online form. Chase responded almost immediately, and we started to discuss what needed to be done. I was impressed with the enthusiasm and efficiency they displayed. Long story short, they reviewed my past three years of returns and found $500 in additional refunds I missed out on, and they helped file amended tax returns to recoup these savings. They also helped file this year's taxes, a financial disclosure for my international holdings (FBAR), and provided a neat projection for the 2018 tax year to understand how the recent tax reforms will impact my filing. I stopped by their office to sign some paperwork, and spoke at length with Max about a variety of questions I'd always had, and he answered them effortlessly. My husband and I are self-employed and have now used Dark Horse CPAs for two years. Our accountant Max, has always been so patient in answering all of the questions we have had along the way. This year, they really blew it out of the water for us. We were in the process of purchasing a home (that would not be on the market for long) and needed our 2018 Tax Returns in order to verify our income and move forward with our mortgage. We didn't realize we needed this until super last minute and I called Max in a panic to see if it would be a possibility to have our taxes (both for our business and our personal) completed by the end of day. I knew it was a long shot question and definitely a huge ask since tax season was well underway. Max spoke to his boss, Chase, and they pulled together as many resources as they could and had our taxes to us just a few hours later. I need to be straight up about this - working with this accounting firm was a big letdown. We lost a ton of money because of mistakes that should never have happened, like getting our company's EIN wrong on official paperwork. That mess cost us big in taxes and fees. They also played around with the contract terms on us. When it was time to renew, we suddenly saw higher prices for less service. They basically cut what they were doing for us but expected more money. That's on me, though; I should've been more careful and not just trusted them to look out for us. The real kicker was how they handled our questions. When we asked why we weren't getting certain tax breaks, their attitude was pretty much "take a hike" - totally unprofessional. And when we actually had issues with the work they were doing, they just bailed on us. They were already three months late with the regular bookkeeping stuff, even though we paid them for it. So, take my advice: read all the negative reviews you can find on these guys and think twice before you go with them. I sure wish I did. read more

I've been working with Suzi Drennen at Dark Horse CPA's since 2010. Suzi's professionalism and attention to detail have been far superior to any other CPA I have worked with in the past. She is always very prompt in responding to my emails and helping me navigate technical issues in regards to uploading tax documents to the Dark Horse portal.
