This is a great County Muni. The fairways, tees and greens are in great condition. Some of the bunkers could use some TLC. It's not an easy walk, but many walk, especially in the early AM. Some of the negative reviews are clearly from folks who don't understand normal Muni golf. read more

A Strange Experience - yesterday, my wife and I went to the course, and were greeted by the starter with a lot of hostility. Usually we're quite early, and today we were right on time (about two minutes ahead). He was yelling, and said that we needed to "always be there 10 minutes ahead" - I was told on the phone that the course was "running on time and not ahead." We then offered to give up the first hole of the round (even though we paid for all 18), if it would help other golfers and the flow of the game. The starter responded that this "wasn't good enough", and then added "that's not the point; I'm going to make an example out of you". Obviously this was inappropriate, and an employee of the course should not make things personal because of a pet peeve. Golfers have complained in the past, that the staff of this course can be rude in general. To be clear, we have not had that experience and the rest of the staff was friendly as usual. No, this was a one off with a bad apple, that should be addressed. (It sounds like others here have had issues with the starter as well). read more

This course was by far the best course I golfed on all summer. Usually when I go to some county courses I am met with a rude staff and especially the starter is rude to me and my buddies. But our starter, Rich, was super nice and even encouraging. He truly made us feel comfortable and excited to golf on this course. Also the tee boxes were very well kept and the greens were super nice and smooth. I also really liked the color and landscape of this course it truly makes it special. Overall I would recommend this course to anyone considering I paid 75$ for a 4:30 tee time on a Sunday. This course was my favorite I have golfed on so far and I am excited to come back. read more

The starter age discriminated me (in my early 20s) I had a 1:50 tee time and he let 3 people with a 2:00 tee time go ahead of me and made me wait for a 2some that came at 2:10. Very unprofessional when I paid to start at a certain time and let's 3 randoms start 10 minutes early and make me wait an additional 20 minutes from when I was supposed to tee off. 2.5 stars... Darlington is a Bergen County Golf course, if you live in the county you can buy a $40/yr card that saves you $20/round at 5 different county courses. Without the card, a full round of 18 with a card will run you $82/87 (weekday/weekend). That being said, if you're booking on GolfNow, you can occasionally find some awesome HotDeals. I was able to get 18 with a cart for only $54 on short notice. The course is long, hilly, interesting, and quite challenging (especially the greens). Unfortunately that's where the positives run out. I had the most bizarre/horrendous experiences at a golf course here. The club house is still requiring all people to be masked to enter, not just the unvaccinated which is a bit unusual but fine. I was just standing in the doorway telling the guy behind the plexi glass booth that I was here for my tee time and he felt the need to tell me I needed a mask even though it was clear I had no intention of entering the building. After I checked in he told me I'd be sharing a cart. So they're not allowing me inside the clubhouse without a mask but are requiring me to share a cart with a stranger for the next 4+ hours? A cart I paid for? I looked outside the clubhouse and they had a whole slew of golf carts, they surely weren't low on inventory. It wasn't just me, everyone on the course was required to share carts. This contributed to the back up at nearly every hole. The pace of play was horrible and this was definitely in large part because of how the course was managed. Not only was there no refreshment cart to come around (alcohol is prohibited on the course) but the club house had no amenities and the course didn't even have water. The course itself isn't the best maintained, the greens were pretty beat up and alarmingly quick. There were no rakes at the sand traps, and some of the traps had very poor drainage. The course also didn't have any "no carts" signs on the fairways before the greens. My partner was reprimanded for getting too close to the green in the cart (I'd say he was probably 15 yards away). The icing on the cake was when the course ranger came to us when we were putting on 16 at about 6pm telling us that we'd have to return our carts after 17 and that if we wanted, we could take pull carts to finish out our round. There was no way we were going to drive our carts down the length of 18 to the clubhouse, get pull carts, walk back down the length of 18 to tee off, and then walk back up the 18th. We ignored the guy and just finished our round with the carts. It should also be noted that the driving range has been closed for what appears to be a couple years. It's completely overgrown and abandoned. Between the horrible management and lack of amenities it will definitely be a couple years before I give this course another try. read more

It really bothers me to have to but I must. While in the NY area, I've played at this course twice. The course is great, but the people working for the public course really need communication classes. I think being rude is not par for the course, negativity is not a good thing, and the energy that comes with it as well but before I step foot or recommend this course I can only urge the powers to be to really think about who's behind the phone, pro shop, and starter. Everyone should be respectful especially when paying out of state prices per round. :( read more

I must say... Without knowing the course, 'Overall I had a good time getting out there'. I was fortunate to play with some pretty nice playing partners, two ladies who almost shot par, and a guy who knew the course. He decided to walk! He was never behind. However, when the round came to a close (it was 100+ Degrees) "Walk" NOT ME, BABY! The round, took 4-1/2 hours. Started at 10:30am, was loading my clubs in the car at 2:50pm. The Course: Some of the greens don't seem to drain well, I remember about (7 greens) that seemed saturated to the point, there were bald spots. But, playable, and a decent speed. Loved the fairways. Grab the normal 2 dozen box of balls, if you don't drive with a lotta control. You will lose them in the trees. In a nutshell, I elected to get the Non-Residents card to allow for cheaper fees when I go back. Which will be, next Week. Now, I just need to figure out how to get the same exact playing partners!!! The staff: that I ran into... Were all pretty cool. No stress at all, as in other reviews. Who knows, maybe there's been a shake down. Either way, I don't need a golf course staff to kiss my butt, because I'm paying discounted $$ to play a round. They were nice enough. I'm glad a found a course, while living in jersey. It's not next door, but worth the 45 minute drive! read more

I really think it is a high 3 to low 4 course. Since I play there every weekend, I'd prefer the rating to stay low. It gets high ratings for the conditions and challenge for a public course. That's really why anyone would want to play here. The lows - clubhouse is low budget. No food (beyond vending machines), dingy muni bathrooms, very little water on the course to drink. The staff (and rangers) can be a bit annoying and cranky but overall they're not as bad as they used to be. Parking is not a problem and it does have a driving range on prem so you can warm up before hand. read more

This course deserves a 4+ rating. Beautiful course to play but unfortunately this place offers zero amenities. Course is very strict about bringing any type of fluids or food on the course. The only water available is sold in a building, that doubles as a clubhouse, which is very similar to my shed. Played yesterday and the temp was in the 80's. Can you believe it! NO FREE WATER ON THE COURSE. We found one water cooler on 16 that was bone dry. We asked front desk about water on the course...they gave us a look as if water was not apart of green fees. Be sure to hydrate before playing at Darlington. Note: nice big sign saying we support our troops. Unfortunately they don't go beyond making a sign. read more

This course is nice but the people who work there are not. The rangers and people who work at the pro shop are rude and need some anger management classes. They basically threaten you if you don't follow course policies. Stay away! There are lots of courses in the area where they want their customers to come back again. Not at Darlington! I stopped renewing my card last year and it was a great decision. FYI played 50 rounds last year in nj on public courses. read more

This was the first time I played here since I am a non-resident. I was extended an invite to play yesterday. As far as the greens are concerned they are well kept and the grounds are clean. However, the staff is not very friendly except for Leo. Not to mention they failed to disclose their procedures or protocols. For example, returning carts at 7:30 when our set time to start was 6:10 and we were playing 9 holes. Never been on a county course where this has happened and the ranger comes to notify you. Needless to say it was a waste of $45 to play 6 holes just so they could go home. Pricing is also very high. I have a county county card in central jersey (another county)and the prices are better. 9 holes with a county card runs $17 without a cart. Again, they need to have a 9 hole rate. $45 is what you would pay to play 18 holes with a cart on a county course as a member. Here members paid $35 for 9 holes. Ridiculous!!! If this is the case carts should not be allowed out for times set after 5:30. Golfers should be informed that they will have to walk as carts need to be in by 7:30. Not to mention it's not even dark at 7:30. I don't think I will be back. Plus they have no amenities. NOTHING!!! Come on Bergen County you can do better at Darlington Gold Course. Your club house should be just as lush as your greens look. read more

Just found out they switched to new token system for the golf range. The old range cards you could purchase up to $200 ($250 in credit) were supposed to never expire. Now to transfer to new token system, your old card gets you 2 tokens or $25 no matter how much credit you had pending. That is an awful way to take customer $$ . They could easily just scan card and redeem it in new token. There goes extra $$ I had left on the card.. it's not worth even asking the staff about it. They obviously don't have any sympathy. read more

Course is great but management will ruin it !! The course was soaked when I went & people were using 90 Degree. Seen tracks all over course. Spots were carts could go some got stuck.. Will not go after any rain days before again. read more
